Director Fazil as Kutyali Marakkar in Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham

Shoot for Priyadarshan’s magnum opus ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ is progressing at a rapid pace in Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad. The movie already has some big names in the cast and crew. Director Fazil is the latest to join the team. He has been signed to play the role of Kutyali Marakkar in the movie. The role was originally supposed to be played by veteran actor Madhu, but he later opted out due to some unknown reasons.

Priyadarshan took to his official social media handle to share Fazil’s look from the movie. The director looks almost unrecognizable with his long bearded avatar. The movie is based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar IV. Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief of Zamorin of Calicut in the 16th century, whose duty was to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army.

While Mohanlal plays the fourth Marakkar, his son Pranav essays the younger part of his character. Fazil has been signed to play the role of the first of the four Markkars, Kutyali Marakkar. It is worth a mention that the director is also playing a major character in Mohanlal’s other upcoming biggie, ‘Lucifer’. Fazil reportedly plays a priest in the Prithviraj directorial.

Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham has a star-studded cast. Though the makers are yet to make an official announcement, reports suggest that the cast comprises of Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Mukesh, Madhu, Keerthy Suresh, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Manju Warrier and Pooja Kumar. Few British and Chinese actors will also be seen in the movie.

Major portions of the movie are currently being shot in the film city. Sabu Cyril’s team has erected massive sets, which includes huge ships, palaces and villages in the film city. If things go as per plans, entire shoot will be completed by March. Priyadarshan had earlier revealed that the movie will be hitting screens only in 2020 as the movie demands extensive post-production. The makers will be giving maximum attention to the post-production works, which will be mostly done abroad.

Mohanlal’s Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are coming together for the production of what is said to be the most expensive film ever made in Malayalam cinema history.

Unanimously positive reviews for Vijay Superum Pournamiyum

Asif Ali starrer ‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ (VSP) has hit screens today. Prior to the release, the movie had a positive buzz thanks to the interesting promos. As it turns out, the movie has opened to unanimously positive response from all the centres. Reviews from critics and passionate cinephiles in movie discussion platforms indicate a clean feel-good entertainer. Resul Pookutty introduces surround sync sound technology with VK Prakash’s Praana

Director VK Prakash is well known for his penchant for trying new technologies in his films – be it the slow motion camera in ‘Police’ or the drone cameras in ‘Trivandrum Lodge’. With his vast experience in the ad film industry, the director has always been on the front to introduce innovative ideas in filmmaking. For his upcoming film ‘Pranaa’, starring Nithya Menen, he has hired the services of Oscar winner Resul Pookutty to indulge the system of live surround sync format, which has hitherto been used in Indian cinema.

In a recent interview, Resul explained the process of surround sync in detail and how different it is from the normal sycn sound format. According to him, in regular sync sound, the dialogues are recorded. But in surround sync, everything else apart from the dialogues, that is the ambient sounds, is recorded. This is done with the help of multiple microphones. Live mixing is also done while the shoot is progressing.

‘Pranaa’ had raised the curiosity of cinephiles right from the time of its announcement. The movie is a psychological thriller with only one character in the entire movie. Nithya plays the sole character of an English writer. It is made as a multilingual in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Multiple National award winner PC Sreeram has cranked the camera and music is by Arun Vijay and Louiz Banks. The movie is scheduled for release on January 18.

Njan Prakashan Review: Another smooth Anthikadan wine

One constant thing that the critics throw at Sathyan Anthikad is his tendency to take the same old frequented route. But what makes him still relevant is his ability to infuse something relatable in all his films. A favorite among the family audience, one has to give it to Sathyan Anthikad for making movies that have immense repeat value. While almost all his contemporaries have faded out, he stands strong amidst the new gen wave with his old school filmmaking.

Anthikad’s latest outing, ‘Njan Prakashan’ with the most dependable actor of the current gen, Fahadh Faasil, is almost the rehash of earlier films. There’s a touch of ‘Vinodayatra’, ‘Oru Indian Pranayakatha’, ‘Bhagyadevatha’ and even some intentionally done shout-out to ‘Nadodikkattu’. Still ‘Njan Prakashan’ entertains and offers a satisfying movie watching experience.

The writer Sreenivasan makes an effective comeback with his brand of satire and dry humour, all weaved around a familiar self-realization story. The protagonist Prakashan is a representative of the average Malayali, who is cunning, jealous, lazy but still is good at heart. To make some quick money and ‘settle’ in life, Prakashan aka PR Akash tries all possible ways but ends up in vain. How the various people he across in life influence him and change him to a better person is what ‘Njan Prakashan’ is all about.

Fahadh Faasil repeats his Aymanam Sidharthan plus Sibi Sebastian act here. But I firmly believe that no other actor apart from Fahadh could have done justice to the role of Prakashan like he did. Not that it was challenging or anything, bu there was only a fine line from going exaggerated. The effort he puts to ‘act’ (which he rarely does) is very evident here. Prakashan is a character that could have easily gone overblown but Fahadh manages to hold steady. He is ably supported by Sreenivasan, the graceful Nikhila Vimal, Anju Kurian, KPAC Lalitha and the surprise performer, Devika Sanjay.

Njan Prakashan Review Report Hit Or Flop

‘Njan Prakashan’ has some memorable frames by S Kumar, a Sathyan Anthikad regular, and a couple of pleasant songs composed by Shaan Rahman. With a duration of just 130 minutes, the movie is neatly packed with minimal melodrama and unnecessary elements.

In a nutshell, ‘Njan Prakashan’ has everything one would expect from a Sathyan Anthikad film. It’s the same old wine that the veteran has been brewing for years, but it still tastes delicious.

Shaji Nadeshan confirms that Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar will start rolling this year

Kunjali Marakkar has been the hot topic of discussion in M-Town circles for some time now. Two separate projects were announced with the two icons of Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty. August Cinema was the first to announce their project on Kerala Piravi day (November 1) in 2017. Santhosh Sivan was supposed to direct the movie with Mammootty playing the role of Kunjali Marakkar IV.

Later, reports emerged that Priyadarshan is also planning a similar project on Marakkar with Mohanlal. The director had made it clear that he will start his project only if August Cinema’s movie does not start within eight months. The delay in Mammootty’s project prompted Priyadarshan to go ahead with his plans. Currently, shoot for the Mohanlal starrer, titled as Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’, is progressing at a brisk pace in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, there were reports about Mammootty’s project being dropped. But Shaji Nadeshan of August Cinema clarifies that they have never thought of dropping the film. Apparently, they have been working on the Kunjali’s film since 2014 but the huge budget involved and Santhosh Sivan’s other commitments forced the delay. Shaji confirmed that the movie would go on floors this year itself.

According to him, writer TP Rajeevan has been working on the script for years. Priyadarshan had approached Rajeevan for the script, but he could not give it due to his commitment his August Cinema. Shaji affirms that their film will be purely based on historical facts. As part of research, he had also visited Kunjali’s ancestral house and promised the family that the movie would be made as a tribute to the life of the legendary naval chieftain.

An official announcement about the budget and when the shoot commences would be made only after the casting process is completed.

Joshiy’s next to have Joju George in the lead

Joshiy is one of the most accomplished filmmakers that the Malayalam industry has ever seen. During the late 80s and 90s, Joshiy was instrumental in shaping up the careers of several stars, including the big Ms. However, in the last decade, the director has been off colour with most of his films ending up on the lacklustre side. The veteran is now set to make a comeback. If reports are to be believe, his next will have Joju George and Manju Warrier in the lead.

Joju is currently basking in the glory of his recent hit ‘Jospeh’. The Padmakumar directorial was Joju’s debut film as a lead actor and he made it a memorable one. Winning widespread appreciation for his performance, the actor stands a strong contender for all major awards this year. Post ‘Joseph’, Joju has been getting a lot of big offers.

Joshiy’s film will also have Chemban Vinod Jose playing a major role. Details about the other cast, crew or the movie’s genre are not yet known. Shoot is most likely to commence in February. An official confirmation in this regard is still awaited.

Meanwhile, there are also reports about Joshiy reuniting with megastar Mammootty for a movie scripted by National award winner of Sajeev Pazhoor of ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’ fame. Considering Mammootty’s packed schedule, it is highly unlikely that the movie would go on floors anytime soon.
