Official: Vivek Oberoi to star in Narendra Modi biopic

It seems like Bollywood’s love for biopics is not coming to an end any time soon. Already a handful of biopics are coming up this year and another one has just been announced. This time it’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is getting a biopic. Vivek Oberoi will be playing Modi’s role in the movie titled as ‘PM Narendra Modi’. Sandip Singh will be producing the movie. Shoot will be commencing this month, before that, a first look has been planned to be released this coming Monday (January 7).

The project was officially announced by Taran Adarsh. He tweeted,

IT’S OFFICIAL… Vivekanand Oberoi [Vivek Oberoi] to star in Narendra Modi biopic, titled #PMNarendraModi… Directed by Omung Kumar… Produced by Sandip Ssingh… First look poster will be launched on 7 Jan 2019… Filming starts mid-Jan 2019.

Initially, the Modi biopic was planned with veteran actor Paresh Rawal, but he opted out due to some unknown reasons. Director Omung Kumar is well known for helping two biopics – Mary Kom and Sarbjit. The Modi biopic seems like a hastily planned one. Vivek Oberoi has already started his preparations and has had a couple of look tests. If reports are to believed, the makers are planning to shoot it in a start-to-finish schedule and release before 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Prithviraj’s starrer ‘Nine’ aka ‘9’ is gearing up to hit screens in February 7. The movie directed by Jenuse Mohammed of ‘100 Days of Love’ fame is touted to be a science-fiction flick. Along with Prithviraj, the movie also has veteran actor Prakash Raj in a crucial role. His character introduction poster was unveiled last day. His character is named Dr Inayat Ali Khan and it promises to be a challenging role. ‘9’ is Prakash Raj’s third film with Prithviraj after sharing screen space with him in ‘Mozhi’, ‘Abhiyum Naanum’ and ‘Anwar’.

‘9’ has Prithviraj playing the lead character named Albert. ‘Godha’ fame Wamiqa Gabbi and Mamta Mohandas play the two female leads. According to Prithviraj, the movie has an emotional core that deals with a strong father-son bonding. The actor has assured that ‘9’ will offer a new experience for the Malayali audience.

‘9’ has a formidable technical crew comprising of DOP Abhinandan Ramanujam, editor Shameer Muhammed and music director Shaan Rahman. ‘Da Thadiya’ actor Sekhar Menon is handling the original music score. The movie marks the maiden venture of Prithviraj Productions. Sony Pictures International Productions is also making their entry to Mollywood by jointly funding this project.

While the movie gets ready for release next month, the trailer will be out online on January 9.

Earlier this week, the first look poster of ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ was released in social medias. Now the makers have informed that the movie’s teaser will be out tomorrow at 5 PM. Madhu C Narayanan is directing the movie which stars
Shane Nigam, Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, newcomer Mathew Thomas and Fahadh Faasil in major roles. National award winner Syam Pushkaran has scripted the movie.

According to the makers, ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ is a modern family drama set in Kumbalangi, a suburb in the city of Kochi. The movie has Soubin, Shane Nigam, Sreenath Bhasi and Mathew Thomas playing brothers while Fahadh Faasil will be seen as the villain. Fahadh is essaying a full fledged negative role in Malayalam after a long gap and that’s a major highlight of the movie.

‘Kumbalangi Nights’ has cinematography by Shyju Khalid and music by Sushin Shyam. Syam Pushkaran along with actor-director Dileesh Pothan have launched a new production house named Working Class Hero and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ is their maiden venture. They are producing it jointly with Fahadh Faasil’s banner Fahadh Faasil and Friends.

Fahadh Faasil is arguably the best Malayalam actor of this generation and he is often compared to Mohanlal of the late 80s and 90s. It is Fahadh’s ability to get into the skin of a character and perform that earned him the comparison with the legendary Mohanlal. Recently, after the release of ‘Njan Prakashan’, ‘the next Mohanlal’ chorus became louder. There is a large section who believe that it’s still early days for Fahadh to being compared to Mohanlal, who is among the finest actors in the country.

In a recent interview with Film Companion, director Sathyan Anthikad was asked about his opinion on the same. According to him, the two actors are different but they way they approach their roles have lot of similarities. He is quoted saying, “The credibility with which they become a character is what makes them alike”.

‘Njan Prakashan’ marks Sathyan Anthikad’s second time collaboration with Fahadh after ‘Oru Indian Pranayakatha’. Hitting screens during the Christmas season, the movie opened to excellent response with the family audiences lapping it up. Even after two weeks of its release, most shows are running to packed crowd and the movie is well on course to become a blockbuster.

After the delightful first single ‘Minni Minni’, the makers of ‘June’ have released the first teaser in social medias. Rajisha Vijayan plays the titular the movie, which traces the journey of a girl from her teenage to mid 20s. Joju George and Ashwathy play her parents in the movie. The cast also includes several newcomers.

‘June’ is directed by debutant Ahamed Khabeer. He has also scripted the movie jointly with Libin Varghese. Rajisha has undergone a evident makeover for the movie. She will be appearing in multiple looks in the movie as the story progresses through a ten year long journey. After bagging the State award for her debut film ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’, the actress has not got enough meaty roles. From the promos it looks like, June is a character which promises to do justice to her true potential.

Vijay Babu is producing ‘June’ under his banner Friday Film House. The makers have already announced that it will be a February release, but the exact date is not yet known.

Oscar award winning VFX studio associated with Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham

‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ shoot is progressing at a rapid pace in Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad. The period flick is helmed by ace filmmaker Priyadarshan. Major portions of the movie have been planned to be shot in the film city. Since it is a big scale film, the makers have hired some of the best available technicians. Award winning production designer Sabu Cyril’s team has erected massive sets, which includes huge ships, palaces and villages.

For handling the visual effects, Los Angeles-based Anibrain VFX and Creative Studio has been signed. Director Priyadarshan himself revealed this in a recent interview. Last year, Anibrain along with Framestore won the Oscar award for Best Visual Effects for the movie, ‘Blade Runner 2049’.

If things go as per plans, entire shoot of Marakkar will be completed by March. Priyadarshan had earlier revealed that the movie will be hitting screens only in 2020 as the movie demands extensive post-production. The makers will be giving maximum attention to the post-production works, which will be mostly done abroad.

Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham is an epic movie is based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar IV. Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief of Zamorin of Calicut in the 16th century, whose duty was to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army.

Though the makers are yet to make an official announcement, reports suggest that the cast comprises of Mohanlal, his son Pranav, Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Mukesh, Madhu, Keerthy Suresh, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Manju Warrier and Pooja Kumar. Few British and Chinese actors will also be seen in the movie.

Mohanlal’s Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are coming together for the production of what is said to be the most expensive film ever made in Malayalam cinema history.

Three big Malayalam releases this month!!

After a pretty ordinary 2018, Malayalam movies lovers, trade experts and industry insiders are all hoping for a better 2019. To set the ball rolling, three big films are gearing up to hit screens in January. Nivin Pauly’s ‘Mikhael’, Pranav Mohanlal’s ‘Irupathiyonnam Noottandu’ and Asif Ali’s ‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ are the three star films expected to release this month.

‘Mikhael’ has been announced as a January 18 release. Directed by Haneef Adeni of ‘The Great Father’ fame, the movie has Nivin Pauly in the lead and Unni Mukundan as the antagonist. Touted to be a family-oriented thriller, ‘Mikhael’ promises to a stylish flick on the lines of Haneef’s earlier films.

Pranav Mohanlal starrer ‘Irupathiyonnaam Noottaandu’ is directed by Arun Gopy. The movie is scheduled for released this month, but the exact date has not yet been announced. From the promos, the movie looks like a complete entertainer with equal dose of action, romance and fun. Pranav as plays an adventure junkie in the movie and debutante Zaya David will be seen as his pair.

‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ marks the third time union of Asif Ali and director Jis Joy. The movie is touted to be a romantic entertainer with a socially relevant message in it. Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the female lead in the movie. Devan, Siddique, Aju Varghese, KPAC Lalitha, Renji Panicker, Shanthi Krishna, Darshana Rajendran, Balu Varghese and Joseph Annamukutty Jose are also part of the cast. Release date is expected to be announced shortly.

‘Mikhael’ is one of the most anticipated Malayalam movies in the first quarter of the year. The movie written and directed by Haneef Adeni of ‘The Great Father’ fame has Nivin Pauly playing the lead and Unni Mukundan as the antagonist. The teaser and posters released so far have all been highly impressive. The makers have now announced that the movie will be hitting screens on January 18.

‘Mikhael’ is said to be a family-oriented thriller in which Nivin plays the role of a doctor. Like Haneef’s earlier works, ‘Mikhael’ also promises to be a stylish mass entertainer. Unni Mukundan as the antagonist Marco Jr sports an extremely stylish look in the movie. Sudev Nair, Manjima Mohan, JD Chakravarthy, Siddique, Renji Panicker, Ashokan, Shanthi Krishna, Kalabhavan Shajon and KPAC Lalitha are also part of movie’s supporting cast.

Extraordinary response for Rowdy Baby song from Maari 2

Maari 2 continues to fare well after two weeks of its theatrical run. Despite stiff competition from other Christmas releases, the Dhanush starrer has managed to hold steady. Though the critic reviews have mostly been mixed, common audience, largely youth, have taken a liking for the movie. This Balaji Mohan directorial is the sequel to his 2015 flick ‘Maari’.

Last day, the makers released the video of the sensational ‘Rowdy Baby’ song. Within 15 hours, the song has already fetched a whopping 3.3 million views. Dhanush and Sai Pallavi’s terrific dance, especially the latter’s, is the reason for such a phenomenal response even after days from the movie’s release. Prabhu Deva has choreographed the song. It is a fun peppy track set to tunes by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Dhanush has penned the lyrics, and he has also rendered the song along with Dhee.

In ‘Maari 2’, Dhanush reprises his role of the naughty don and Sai Pallavi plays his pair, Araathu Anandhi. Malayali actor Tovino Thomas plays the antagonist, Thanatos. Krishna, Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar, Robo Shankar and Vinoth also essay major roles in the movie. Unlike the first part, ‘Maari 2’ has a proper Tamil commercial packaging with equal dosage of mass elements, romance and emotions.
