Unda all set to go on floors; Pre-production works progressing in Chhattisgarh

It is already known that ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’ (AKV) fame Khalid Rahman’s next is with megastar Mammootty. The movie titled as ‘Unda’ is all set to go on floors. The team members including director Khalid and producer Krishnan Sethukumarr are currently in Chhattisgarh for the pre-production works. They have planned to shoot in exotic locations in states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. This particular terrain has not been explored much in Malayalam cinema and so the movie promises to be a refreshing visual experience.

Unda has Mammootty playing the role of a police officer. The plot is about an unit of policemen who are on election duty in the Naxalite prone areas in North India. While it was widely believed that the movie is an action-packed mass entertainer, the makers have confirmed it as an action-comedy. Mammootty will be appearing in a fun cop avatar in the movie. It is said that the actor has not something like this before in his four-decade-long career. Along with him, the movie also has Shine Tom Chacko, Jacob Gregory, Sudhi Koppa, Arjun Ashokan, Dileesh Pothan, and Alencier Ley Lopez in supporting roles.

Unda’s technical crew includes ‘Jigarthanda’ fame Gavemic U Ary cranking the camera and Prashanth Pillai handling the music department. For action choreography, the makers have signed Sham Kaushal from Bollywood. Khalid Rahman has penned the story and screenplay is by Harshad.

Movie Mill will be presenting the movie in association with Gemini Studio. The movie is slated to go on floors early next month and is scheduled to hit screens in January, 2019.

Lilli Review: A gripping film that’s first of its kind in Malayalam cinema

Debutant Prasobh Vijayan’s Lilli has hit screens today. Prior to the release, the makers managed to create a buzz in social medias with their impressive posters and trailer. The movie marks the arrival of a bunch of newcomers, both in the cast and crew. Let’s see how their maiden work has turned out to be.

Lilli is basically a survival thriller centred around a pregnant woman and a gang of kidnappers. The woman is held captive in a dingy building in the city outskirts. Whether she manages to escape from them is the crux of the plot. Anything more will end up as spoilers, so let’s not go further.

First things first, Lilli is not a pleasant watch at all. It is a gripping survival story of a heavily pregnant woman. This woman is willing to go to any extent to protect herself and her child. She is a fierce fighter who is unwilling to go down come what may. The circumstances she has lived in has moulded her that way and hence her actions are convincing.

Samyuktha Menon in the titular role has delivered an emphatic performance. Lilli is diametrically opposite to the eye-candy and lovable Devi of ‘Theevandi’. This role of a heavily pregnant woman must have taken a toll on her, both physically and mentally. It was literally hard to sit through the movie watching her going through all the pain and suffering. And, Samyuktha’s earnest performance is the prime reason for that.

The next best performer is Dhanesh Anand, who plays the role of Rajesh. Among the three kidnappers, he is the most hateful. As a creepy debaucher, the debutant has done full justice to his part. Kannan Nayar, Aaryan Krishnan Menon, Kevin Jose and Sajin Cherukayil have also played their roles well.

Along with the writing, Lilli also depends heavily on the technical aspects to create an eerie atmosphere and thereby force the audience to feel the tension. Sreeraj Raveendran’s cinematography is impressive with his unusual patterns of lighting. The different shades of green and red are striking and are used in apt moments. The total soundscape of the movie is spooky and Sushin Shyam is once again splendid with the background score. Some metaphors have also been included smartly and the open-ended climax tells a lot about the debutant director’s conviction in his work.

Overall, Lilli is a scary and disturbing film that is a first of its kind in Malayalam. A bunch of youngsters have successfully proved that you don’t need ghosts and jump-scares to invoke fear. Lilli deserves a watch in a proper theatrical ambience for films like these are a rarity here.

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam Review: Where Mani Ratnam plays to the gallery

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam Review: Where Mani Ratnam plays to the gallery

Amidst tremendous hype, the ace Mani Ratnam’s multi-starrer ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ (CCV) hit screens last day. Clearly inspired from Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather series, CCV is all about sibling rivalry and bloodshed. Let’s jump into the review in detail.

Senapathi (Prakash Raj) is this powerful don who gets attacked by a gang and is forced to be bed-ridden. He has three sons – Varadan (Arvind Swamy), Thyagu (Arun Vijay) and Ethi (Simbu), who all have an eye on Senapathi’s chair. While Varadan is a hot-headed gangster, Thyagu is a sophisticated businessman based in Dubai. Ethi, the last of the sons, is involved in arms trafficking and other criminal activities in Serbia. Then there is Rasool Ibrahim (Vijay Sethupathi), a suspended cop, who is close to the family. After Senapathi’s fall, a gang war breaks out for his position. Who eventually has the last laugh? That’s it about the plot.

It’s the classic case of sibling rivalry that we have seen in the Mahabharathas and the Baahubalis. But still CCV is neatly packaged with enough commercial elements to please a commoner. What the movie lacks is the trademark Mani Ratnam touches. The master is known for his ability to churn out characters and moments that evoke an emotional connect with the audience. CCV sorely lacks it as it follows a mundane path for most part of its run-time.

After establishing the characters, the tension within the household is built gradually with some heated talkie portions. The one particular sequence involving the three sons and their parents was beautifully staged and it was followed by another poignant scene involving the old couple. The interval block also comes at the right moment leaving us piqued with curiosity. It is in the latter half where things begin to go wayward with quite a few bland moments.

The characters of Aishwarya Rajesh, Thyagarajan and Aditi Rao Hydari add nothing much to the plot. They are there just for the sake of it, something one doesn’t normally expect from a Mani Ratnam film. The director is known for his fine sense of visual aesthetics but here in CCV, it looks like he solely concentrated on the story-telling part. There are several loose ends in the narrative and often question the sensibilities of the audience. With such an ensemble cast, it is evident that the director wanted to play it the galleries.

Coming to the performances, all the four male lead actors have done their parts well. While Arvind Swamy carries the infuriated attitude all the time, he gets his moment in an emotional sequence towards the end where he nails it to perfection. Arun Vijay is remarkably good as Thyagu. His character has several shades and is a tough nut to crack. Simbu has performed well in a well-written character. Him along with the ever-dependable Vijay Sethupathi bring in the lighter moments and they both shine throughout. Among the female actors, only Jyothika and Jayasudha have meaty roles and they have done justice to their parts.

The way Mani Ratnam has used AR Rahman’s songs and score is highly impressive. All the songs are used in bits and pieces, and are all woven cleverly around the narrative. Rahman’s background score is among his finest works in recent times. Santhosh Sivan’s cinematography is rich and commercial, something on the lines of his own Thuppakki and Anjaan.

Final word – CCV is perhaps the Mani Ratnam film with the least of his trademark elements. The veteran has gone fully commercial here to come up with a gritty gangster drama. A simple action-packed gangster flick that boasts of a stellar star cast
