I’ve learnt a lot about cinema and acting from Fahadh Faasil: Sharafudheen

Sharafudheen is getting unanimous appreciation for his performance in ‘Varathan’. As the menacing womanizer Pappali Josey, the actor has given his career best. Normally known for his sidekick fun roles, Sharaf has pulled off a remarkable act in Varathan. He credits his co-star Fahadh and director Amal Neerad for all the praise that he has been getting.

This is Sharafudheen’s third outing with Fahadh after sharing screen space with him in ‘Role Models’ and ‘Carbon’. Interestingly, it was director Alphonse Puthren who insisted Sharaf to take up the role in ‘Role Models’. Though it was a fun film, it helped him to look at cinema seriously.

Acting alongside an extraordinary performer like Fahadh, Sharaf could learn a lot about the intricacies of cinema and acting. Apart from the professional bonding, the two are also close friends in real life. They were supposed to play the lead roles in a new movie titled ‘Aanekilum Allenkilum’, but the project was recently dropped unfortunately.

Post ‘Varathan’, Sharafudheen is expected to bag some meaty roles in the future. He currently has Marthandan’s ‘Johny Johny Yes Appa’ and an untiled film with AK Sajan coming up. In Johny.., he is playing a major role as hero Kunchacko Boban’s brother. In AK Sajan’s film, which is a triangular love story, he will be seen as one of the leads along with Siju Wilson and Anu Sithara

I was waiting for an opportunity like Varathan for a long time: Sharafudheen

Fahadh Faasil’s latest outing Varathan continues to do well in theatres. This Amal Neerad directorial is a stylishly shot revenge drama. Releasing on last Thursday, the movie opened to largely positive reviews from the critics. Word of mouth in social medias has been good so far and is helping to pull more audience to theatres. The movie is expected to continue its successful run in the coming weeks as well.

While the lead actors, Fahadh and Aishwarya Lekshmi have delivered what was expected of them, it is actors like Sharafudheen and Vijileesh who have pulled off a real surprise with their performance. The former especially is remarkable while portraying the film’s prime antagonist, Josey K Baby. The actor is getting appreciation from all corners for what is undoubtedly his career-best performance.

In a recent interview, Sharafudheen opened up about how long he had been waiting for an opportunity like this. He considers acting in an Amal Neerad film as a big achievement. He has been a huge fan of the director ever since Big B. During the initial days of Varathan’s shoot, Sharaf was a bit tensed but the director made it comfortable. Due credits to Amal Neerad also for breaking the stereotypes and offering Sharaf a character out of his comfort zone.

Post the success of his character ‘Girirajan Kozhi’ in ‘Premam’, Sharafudheen has mostly been getting comedy roles. Glimpses of his caliber were seen earlier this year in Venu’s Carbon and Jeethu Joseph’s Aadhi. Both the films had him playing the hero’s friend’s role, but they were unlike the goofy sidekick roles. In Carbon, even with the limited screentime he manages to leave a mark.

With the unanimous appreciation for his performance in Varathan, Sharafudheen is expected to bag some meaty roles in upcoming projects.

Beautiful Game: Prithviraj’s film based on football to revive soon?

Prithviraj is one of the most ambitious actors in Malayalam cinema. For a while now, he has been doing films based out of Kerala’s milieu as he believes that films with a pan-Indian appeal is the way forward for the industry. While most of his attempts have failed to taste success, he is still in the process of trying different subjects. One such film that he committed back in 2016 is ‘Beautiful Game’, a sports drama based on football.

The movie was to be directed by ace photographer and ad filmmaker Jamesh Kottakkal and was supposed to produced by actor Asif Ali. However, the project got shelved after Asif Ali backed out. Though there were reports about budget constraints being the issue, the exact reason for him opting out is still not known. Prithviraj soon got busy as he moved on to other projects.

However, in a recent interview, director Jamesh Kottakkal revealed that the project has not entirely been dropped and he is still hopeful of getting it back on track. Apparently, he has spent seven years doing research works for the movie. He is quoted saying to IANS, “There has been a lot of positive developments in this movie as I got more time to work on it.”

Earlier in an interview, the director had said that the movie will be presenting the inside story of the people who are involved in football, both emotionally and physically. In 2016, the makers had even conducted audition rounds for selecting the best football players of the state. Debutant Ajaykumar is scripting the movie. Composer Bijibal and lyricist Rafeeq Ahamed were also part of the team.

Let’s hope the project materializes soon so that the industry and its audience get to witness its first ever proper sports film!
