Scottish Parliamentarian Martyn Day heaps praise on Pazhassi Raja

Ace filmmaker Hariharan’s 2009 movie Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, based on the life of the Kerala king who fought against the British, is considered as one of the best historical flicks to have ever been made in Malayalam cinema. The legendary MT Vasudevan Nair scripted the movie which had Mammootty playing the role of Pazhassi Raja. The movie was a huge success, both critically and commercially. It bagged four awards at the National level and eight at the State level.

Even after a decade, Pazhassi Raja is still considered a benchmark for period films in Malayalam cinema. Recently, Scottish Parliamenterian Martyn Day happened to watch the movie and wrote an interesting note about it in Facebook page. The movie was recommended to Day by P. Sreeramakrishnan, speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, during one of their recent discussions.

Here’s what Martyn Day has written about the movie in his Facebook page,

Yesterday I watched https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887769/ about the struggles of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja against the British East India Company, a little known part of our history.

The lead role of the early Indian freedom fighter is played by Mammootty, a giant of Malayalam film making. I had previously watched his film about Dr Ambedkar who along with Gandhi was a founding father of Independent India.

The film Pazhassi Raja was recommended to me last month by P. Sreeramakrishnan, speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, during a discussion we had about nations histories where I had mentioned the story of Wallace.

Scots will find the film worth watching, and will notice the many parallels with William Wallace. The fight against a powerful foreign power and the use of guerrilla tactics, betrayal and ultimately death, while leaving an inspirational legacy for future generations.

Having checked my general histories of Wellington about Pazhassi Raja this morning, sadly I found no reference to this heroic opponent, so now looking for an English language biography about him.

All in all a worthy historical drama, and how fortunate the Keralites are to have a thriving film industry making such movies starring their own film stars.

I am sure to be watching more Mammootty films soon, and until I learn more Malayalam am grateful for online subtitles.

A few location stills of the movie have been released in social medias. From the stills and promos, the movie looks like a rural based fun entertainer that families seek during the festive season.

Sethu himself has scripted the movie, the core plot of which is set in a village named Krishnapuram. Mammootty plays the role of Hari, a big-brother like figure, fondly called as Hari ettan in the locality. New-gen actors like Jacob Gregory, Shaheen Siddique, Vivek Gopan, Sanju Sivaram and Jude Anthany Joseph play his close acquaintances.

The story is narrated interestingly through various episodes of a blog. Young star Sunny Wayne is reportedly playing the role of a blogger in the movie. His portions were recently shot in Dubai. Anu Sithara, Raai Laxmi and Shamna Kasim play the three female leads. Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vineeth Kumar, Lalu Alex, Thesni Khan, Nandan Unni and Sohan Seenulal are also part of the supporting cast.

The technical crew includes debutant composer Sreenath Sivasankaran, Bijibal (background score), cinematographer Pradeep Nair and editor Shameer Muhammed. The movie is being produced by Murali Dharan and Santha Murali under the banner of Anantha Vision. Reports suggest that the movie will hit screens on August 24, though an official confirmation is still awaited.

Tovino Thomas’ latest release Maradona continues to get good response from the audience. Hitting screens last Friday, the movie opened to largely positive reviews from the critics as well as the common audience. Vishnu Narayan makes his directorial debut with this movie, scripted by another newcomer, Krishnamoorthy.

Actor-turned-filmmaker Madhupal showered praise on team Maradona with a post in his official social media handle. In his post, the director, who has made acclaimed movies like Thalapavu and Ozhimuri, has mentioned that Maradona belongs to Tovino Thomas, Chemban Vinod Jose and the debutant filmmaker Vishnu Narayan. It is worth a mention that Madhupal’s upcoming movie Oru Kuprasidha Payyan stars Tovino in the lead.

Maradona tells the story of two Malayali youngsters who are into ‘quotation’ and other odd jobs to see quick money. They are forced to be on the run after messing with a highly influential politician. The story is primarily centred around Maradona, who takes shelter with one of his relatives in Bengaluru. The movie explores how the people around him influence him to become a better person.

Angamaly Diaries fame Tito Wilson, Chemban Vinod Jose, newcomer heroine Sharany R Nair, Kichu Tellus, Leona Lishoy and Jins Bhaskar get to play meaty roles in the movie. Deepak D Menon has cranked the camera and Sushin Shyam has composed the music.Maradona is being produced by S Vinod Kumar under the banner of Mini Studio. The movie is expected to continue its good run in the coming weeks as well.

The extremely talented Mamta Mohandas will be next seen in a lead role in a horror flick titled Neeli. The movie directed by debutant Althaf Rahman is gearing up to hit screens next month. A new song from the movie was released last day in social medias.

Titled as Chanchakkam Chanchakkam, this lovely song is composed by Sharreth and rendered by Sreya Jayadeep and Swathy Praveen Kumar. BK Harinarayanan has penned the lyrics. Mamta Mohands and Baby Mia feature in the video The other songs from Neeli, Poomigare and En Anpe, have also got good response from social media users.

Horror flicks are a rarity in Malayalam cinema, unlike other Indian film industries. Prithviraj’s Ezra was the lasted noted horror movie made in Mollywood. This upcoming Mamta Mohandas starrer is scripted jointly by newcomers Riyas Marathu and Muneer Mohammadunni

The title Neeli is a slight cue to Kalliyankattu Neeli, a very popular ghost story in Kerala. A horror movie of the same name was made way back in 1979. Along with Mamta, Neeli also stars Anoop Menon in a crucial role as a paranormal investigator. Baburaj, Zinil Zainudeen and ‘Marimayam’ fame Sreekumar are also part of the movie’s cast.

Neeli’s technical crew inlcudes cinematographer Manoj Pillai, composer Sharreth and editor Sajan. Dr Sundar Menon is producing the movie under the banner of Sun Ads and Film Productions. The movie is all set for release on August 10.

First song from Kayamkulam Kochunni to be released tomorrow

Kayamkulam Kochunni is getting ready for a grand release for Onam. The movie which tells the story of legendary highwayman Kochunni is eagerly awaited by the Malayali audience. Nivin Pauly plays Kochunni’s role while Mohanlal will be seen in an extended cameo as Ithikara Pakki. Fans as well as movie lovers have pinned high expectations on the movie.

Promotions have already started and the makers are leaving no stone upturned to publicize the movie to a wider audience. It has now been announced that the first song from the movie will be released tomorrow (August 1) evening in social medias. The song titled as ‘Kalariyadvum Chuvadinazhakum’ is a romantic track featuring the lead pair Nivin Pauly and Priya Anand. Gopi Sunder is handling the music department.

Kayamkulam Kochunni directed by Rosshan Andrrews is an epic period flick set in the 18th century. Bobby and Sanjay have scripted the movie after extensive research works. The movie has Sunny Wayne, Shine Tom Chacko, Priya Anand, MS Bhaskar, Manikandan Achari, Sunil Sukhada, Babu Antony, Aneesh G Menon, Amit Chakalakkal and Kannada actress Ashwini playing supporting roles.

Gokulam Gopalan of Sri Gokulam Films has invested a whopping budget of over Rs 40 crores for the movie. Reports suggest that the movie will be releasing on August 18 in over 300 centres across Kerala.

We had already reported about Asif Ali teaming up with his ‘Adventures of Omanakuttan’ director Rohit VS for a new film titled ‘Iblis’. The movie’s official trailer was released today in social medias. Asif Ali and Madonna Sebastian play the lead pair in the movie which gives vibes of a colorful fantasy entertainer.

Sameer Abdul, the co-writer of Adventures of Omanakuttan has penned Iblis jointly with Rohit. According to the director, Iblis is a musical adventure comedy, something which has rarely been attempted in the grounds of Malayalam cinema. The characters of this film are extremely animated and almost caricaturish in their emotions and body language.

Iblis has four lead characters played by Asif Ali, Madonna Sebastian, Lal and National award winning child actor Master Adish Praveen. The supporting cast also includes Siddique, Sreenath Bhasi, Saiju Kurup and Aju Varghese. Akhil George is the cinematographer and Shameer Muhammed is in charge of the edits. Dawn Vincent handles the music department.

Iblis is being funded by Ichais productions and will be released through Asif Ali’s own banner Adam’s World of Imagination. The makers had eariler announced that the movie will hit screens on August 3.

Trivandrum Lodge team reunite for a new film titled Madras Lodge!

After a three-year-long gap Anoop Menon made his comeback as a scriptwriter with the recently released Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal. The movie which hit screens last Friday has opened to decent reviews from the critics. Anoop Menon is once again wearing the writer’s hat for a new movie titled ‘Madras Lodge’. The title poster was unveiled today in social medias.

VK Prakash will be directing the movie, which marks his reunion with Anoop Menon after a six-year-long gap. They writer-director duo have previously worked together in two films, Beautiful and Trivandrum Lodge, both of which were successful at the box office. It is not yet known if their upcoming movie, Madras Lodge is the sequel of Trivandrum Lodge.

Trivandrum Lodge, released in 2012, was a bold attempt with a mix of genres like romance, drama, black comedy and off-color humor. Jayasurya, Honey Rose, Bhavana, Anoop Menon, Thesni Khan, P Balachandran, Saiju Kurup and many others were part of the movie. Trivandrum Lodge was the one of the first movies to be labelled with a ‘new gen’ tag.

Noble Thomas of 999 Entertainments, who produced Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal, is funding Madras Lodge as well. More details regarding the cast and when the movie goes on floors will be updated soon.

Odiyan acquires the highest Hindi dubbing and satellite rights for a Malayalam movie!

The hugely hyped Mohanlal starrer Odiyan is gearing up for release in October. The movie, which is currently in the post-production phase, is unarguably one of the most awaited Malayalam movies in recent years. True to the hype, Odiyan has already started doing phenomenal pre-release business. The Hindi dubbing and satellite rights of the movie were sold for a whopping Rs 3.25 cr.

Odiyan is followed by Mohanlal’s Villain (3 cr) and Mammootty’s Masterpiece (1.25 cr). Odiyan’s dubbing rights alone were sold for Rs 2.35 crores, which is a new record for a Malayalam movie. Trade experts believe that Odiyan has a pre-release hype which is on par or even better than Pulimurugan. If the movie manages to live up to the expectations, the movie is version certain to break all the existing box office records in Malayalam cinema.

Odiyan directed by VA Shrikumar Menon is based on the lives of odiyans, whose stories are popular in Kerala’s folklore. Odiyans are people who practice odividya, which is a kind of black magic. National award winner Harikrishnan has scripted the movie. This is the first time a movie is being based on odiyans, which has naturally raised the curiosity among the audience.

According to the makers, Odiyan is a mass entertainer with elements of fantasy and magical realism.
Mohanlal, Prakash Raj and Manju Warrier play the major roles. Narain, Innocent, Kailas, Sana Althaf, Siddique and Nandu are also part of the supporting cast. Its technical crew includes cinematographer Shaji Kumar, editor Johnkutty, action choreographer Peter Hein, art director Prashanth Madhav and composers M Jayachandran and Sam CS (background score).

Antony Perumbavoor is producing Odiyan under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. The movie is slated for a grand release on October 11.

The title and first look of Mammootty’s upcoming movie with Vysakh was unveiled last day in social medias. The movie titled as Madura Raja is the spin-off of Mammootty’s character from his 2010 hit flick Pokkiri Raja. Udhayakrishna, who last teamed up with Vysakh last for the mega blockbuster Pulimurugan, has scripted Madura Raja as well.

Just like the first part, Pokkiriraja, Madura Raja has also been planned as a mass commercial entertainer. The movie reportedly has three heroines in Anusree, Shamna Kasim and Mahima Nambiar. Tamil actor Jai is also playing a prominent role in the movie. Prithviraj, who played the role of Mammootty’s brother in Pokkiri Raja, will not be part of this upcoming movie.

Madura Raja has an elaborate supporting cast comprising of Nedumudi Venu, RK Suresh, Vijayaraghavan, Salim Kumar, Aju Varghese, Dharmajan, Biku Kuttan, Siddique, MR Gopakumar, Kailas, Bala, Manikuttan, Noby and many others.
Vysakh-Udhayakrishna combo have retained the same technical team from Pulimurugan for Madura Raja as well. Cinematographer Shaji Kumar, composer Gopi Sundar and editor John Kutty form the crew. Stunts in the movie will be choreographed by Peter Hein, one of Indian cinema’s leading action choreographers.

In an earlier interview, director Vysakh had said that the second part of Pokkiriraja will be a more racy and technically advanced movie. The makers have planned to shoot the movie for around 120 days in a single schedule. This big budget movie is being produced by Nelson Ipe.

As informed earlier, the much awaited first look of Mammootty-Vysakh team’s new movie has been unveiled today in social medias. Titled as Madura Raja, the movie is the spin-off of Mammootty’s character from his 2010 flick Pokkiri Raja. Udhayakrishna, who scripted Pokkiri Raja, has penned this upcoming movie as well.

Pre-production works including location scouting and casting process are currently progressing. If reports are to be believed, Madura Raja has two female leads and Anusree has been confirmed to play one. Tamil actor Jai is also said to be part of the movie. There is still no information about Prithviraj reprising his role from Pokkiri Raja.

Vysakh-Udhayakrishna combo have retained the same technical team from Pulimurugan for Madura Raja as well. Cinematographer Shaji Kumar, composer Gopi Sundar and editor John Kutty form the crew. The movie will have its action choreographed by Peter Hein, one of India’s leading stunt choreographers.

In an earlier interview director Vysakh had said that the second part of Pokkiriraja will be a more racy and technically advanced movie. He said, “It will be an action packed entertainer that can be enjoyed by the fans, kids and the families as well. It will have all necessary elements that one would expect in a Mammootty starrer – a complete package with action, humour and family drama.”

As per latest reports, shoot for the movie will be commencing from the first week of August. The movie is being produced by Nelson Ipe.
