YSR biopic: Yatra teaser to be released on July 8

Malayalam superstar Mammootty is currently in Hyderabad shooting for his Telugu film Yatra, which is the biopic of late Andhra Pradesh CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Mahi Raghav is directing this movie. Vijay Chilla and Shashi Devi are jointly producing the movie under their banner of 70MM Entertainments. The makers have informed that Yatra’s first teaser will be released on July 8, the birthday of YSR.

YSR is one of the most popular and revered politicians that the state of Andhra Pradesh has ever seen. Upon hearing his unfortunate death in a helicopter crash, hundreds of his followers are said to have committed suicide. According to director Mahi Raghav, Yatra is an event-based film which primarily focuses on the time during YSR’s famous three-month-long padayatra in 2003. The padayatra was a defining moment in his career which transformed him into a people’s leader. One of the striking elements of his padayatra was him walking over 300 kms in shoes. The newly released poster also indicates the same.

Yatra is being made as one of the biggest ever biopics in Telugu cinema history. The recent success of Mahanati, the biopic on legendary actress Savithri, has clearly inspired the makers of Yatra. Apart from Mammootty, the movie also has some leading actors from Telugu cinema essaying crucial roles. Jagapathi Babu, Suhasini and Bhumika are already confirmed to be part of the cast.

The makers ar planning to complete shooting and post-production formalities in six months and release the film by January 2019.

Renji Panicker expresses regret for misogyny and caste insensitive remarks in his movies

Renji Panicker expresses regret for misogyny and caste insensitive remarks in his movies

Renji Panicker is one of the most popular screenwriters that Malayalam cinema has ever seen. He was most active as a firebrand writer during the 90s when he teamed up with the likes of Mammootty and Suresh Gopi to churn out a string of successful films. Renji Panicker is well known for his alpha male heroes who mouth lengthy English dialogues and have a strong political viewpoint. Almost all his films have had a political backdrop and discussed about issues relevant during that time period.

However, the one thing that Renji Panicker was widely criticized was for the representation of women in his movies. Some of his iconic characters Bharathchandran and Thevalliparambil Joseph Alex were infamous for their misogynistic dialogues. Unlike today, where films are keenly observed and dissected by a large group of audience who stand for political correctness, the scenario was not the same in the 90s. Those insensitive dialogues were seen as the extension of the hero’s machismo and, strangely, were widely celebrated.

But Renji Panicker has realized his mistakes and expressed his regret in using such dialogues in his films. In a recent interview to TOI, he opened up about how realisation dawned up only later. He is quoted saying, “Earlier, films were never judged from such a perspective or rather, no one used to judge an actor’s standpoint through the characters he or she essayed. I strongly feel that the dialogues, situations or scripts weren’t written consciously out of a strong gender prejudice. It was because I see the characters I have created as just characters. I will not ever accept it if someone says or tries to prove that I have gender prejudices. I am very clear that I am not.”

When asked about the particular scene in Mammootty’s King when he shouts at his female subordinate and ends the dialogue with a ‘you are just a woman remark’, Renji Panicker admitted that he should not have written it.

“When I wrote it, I never thought of belittling women or even degrading the gender, it was just contextual for the film. Those who clapped for those lines have later found it disturbing. If I knew that what I was writing based on a situation will have a different interpretation in the future, I wouldn’t have written that. Definitely, I regret it. If a woman who sits in a crowd finds that my dialogues in the film is degrading her gender or has offended her, I agree that it was a mistake from my side. If any viewer is or was hurt by a remark from the films that I have written – be it based on gender, caste, colour or creed – I shouldn’t have written them. I know it has happened. I have used words like ‘andan, adakodan, chemman, cheruppukuthi…’ but back then, I wasn’t aware how offensive these terms are. Only when criticism arose did I realise that I shouldn’t have written them.”

Renji Panicker is currently scripting the sequel of his blockbuster film Lelam, which had Suresh Gopi in the lead. His son Nithin Renji Panicker of ‘Kasaba’ fame will be directing the sequel.

Shaji Kailas confirms working on a script with Renji Panciker for Mohanlal

Last year, Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas had announced a Mohanlal-Shaji Kailas-Renji Panicker project. Their initial plan was to go on floors this year but for a while now there have been no updates about it. While talks are going around that the project has been dropped, Shaji Kailas has clarified that the movie is very much on and will start rolling once Mohanlal is free from his other commitments.

Shaji Kailas is known for his brand of mass entertainers and his upcoming movie with Mohanlal will be no different. In a recent interview, the director revealed that him and script writer Renji Panicker have been working on a mass entertainer for the superstar. The delay occurred as they had to rework the script’s second half and this process got delayed a bit. Their project had to be put on hold as Mohanlal had other projects pending.

Mohanlal and Shaji Kailas have delivered blockbuster films like Narasimham, Aaram Thamburan and Baba Kalyani. The writer-director duo of Renji Panicker and Shaji Kailas are also famous for their 90s blockbusters like The King, Commissioner, Ekalavyan etc. This upcoming movie will mark the duo’s first time collaboration for a Mohanlal starrer and that has certainly heightened the expectations.

Mohanlal is currently busy with the shoot of his Tamil film with Suriya. In Malayalam, he has the magnum opus Marakkar – Arabikadlinte Simham, set to go on floors in November. It is still not known when his film with Shaji Kailas will start, but fans are hoping that the long wait will be worth it.
