Kammara Sambhavam Review: An interesting satire with top-notch technical values!

The much hyped Kammara Sambhavam has finally hit screens today, as a Vishu release. Dileep and popular South Indian actor Siddharth play the lead roles in the movie. Ad filmmaker Rathish Ambat makes his directorial debut with this movie scripted by the multi-talented Murali Gopy. The posters and teasers were all highly promising, let’s see what the movie offers.

Kammara Sambhavam is a mix genre attempt. One cannot assign a particular genre to this film, which has periodic elements, mass-masala moments and a dose of political satire as well. The movie has an unusual script pattern with contrasting treatments for the two halves. The basic plot is based on a famous quote by Napoleon Bonaparte – “History is a set of lies agreed upon”.

Writer Murali Gopy has taken a leaf out of the current socio-political issues to showcase how history is being tweaked by political parties to bolster their image. Anything more about the plot will end up as spoilers, so I’m not going into it.

Dileep as Kammaran has given a commendable performance. It is an extremely challenging character with many layers and shades to it. But the actor has lived up to the challenges and has tried to bring on fore different styles of acting. Siddharth, who is making his Malayalam debut, was solid as always and his Malayalam pronunciation was very impressive. Among the supporting cast, Murali Gopy, Namita Pramod, Divyaprabha, Siddique and Shweta Menon did their parts well.

It is not easy to helm a movie of this scale, spanning different timelines but Rathish Ambat has shown no signs of a first time director. But the problem is with the writing. Like before, Murali Gopy has tried to infuse too many topics in a single subject and that does backfire at some instances. The latter half is narrated with black comedy or a tone of spoof, but chances are that it may not work with many.

Technically, Kammara Sambhavam is a quality product with high production values. Cinematography by Sunil KS is one of the standout elements in the movie. His frames mark the plot localities clearly and the war portions were shot remarkably well. Gopi Sunder’s ‘massy’ background score in the second half is adrenaline pumping but turns tedious after a while.

Overall, Kammara Sambhavam is an interesting film that touches a lot of topics within its 3 hr long runtime. A commendable effort by the makers for trying something unique. Dileep’s star power and the fact that its a holiday release will work for the movie at the box office.

Malayali: Sathyan Anthikad-Sreenivasan combo’s next is with Fahadh Faasil

We were among the first to report about the famous writer-director duo Sreenivasan and Sathyan Anthikad teaming up after a decade long gap. Fahadh Faasil is playing the lead in their comeback movie which has been titled as ‘Malayali’. The director officially announced the project today (April 14) through his Facebook page.

Fahadh Faasil, who is basking in the glory of the National award, will be playing the role of Prakashan in the movie. From the title we presume that it will be a typical Sreenivasan style satire that discusses about the socio-political issues that an average Malayali is facing currently. This is Fahadh’s second film with Sathyan Anthikad after the hit film ‘Oru Indian Pranayakatha’.

Malayali looks like a very promising project as Sathyan Anthikad-Sreenivasan combo have delivered several memorable films like Sandesham, TP Balagopalan MA, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Nadodikattu, Thalayanamanthram etc. Their last outing together was for the Jayaram starrer Yathrakarude Sradhakku, released back in 2002.

Sethu Mannarkad of Full Moon Cinema is producing Malayali. Interestingly, the director’s last film ‘Jomonte Suvisheshangal’, which had Dulquer Salmaan in the lead, was also produced by the same banner. Shoot for this upcoming movie will be commencing by the first week of July.

S Kumar, a regular in Sathyan Anthikad films will be wielding the camera and the much in demand Shaan Rahman has been signed as the composer. Details regarding the supporting cast have not yet been announced. Stay tuned for more updates.

Kammaran is a character with many layers and Dileep has given his finest performance till date: Murali Gopy

The much hyped Kammara Sambhavam is all set for release tomorrow (April 14). The movie stars Dileep and Siddharth in the lead roles. Murali Gopy has scripted the movie which marks the directorial debut of ad filmmaker Rathish Ambat. It is an epic film set in three different timelines focuses on historical accounts and how it is depicted by the ones who wrote it.

Murali Gopy, the writer, was all praise for Dileep’s performance in Kammara Sambhavam. According to him, the character Kammaran has several shades and layers. It demanded a different style of acting and Dileep was up to the task. The movie has him appearing in multiple looks including a 90-year-old avatar.

Murali Gopy, in the interview, is quoted saying, “Kammaran is a type of character that Dileep has not done before. If we take a look at his career, almost 99.9% of his movies are light-hearted comedy films. I believe these movies have explored only 50% of the actor in Dileep. There is a whole different dimension to the actor in him that has completely been unexplored so far. He can do a wide variety of roles and Kammaran is one such character. He has totally imbibed the character and has given his finest performance till date. As a writer, I’m very satisfied with his output.”

Kammara Sambhavam is hitting screens tomorrow amidst massive hype created by the teaser and the posters. As per reports, the movie will be releasing in over 220 screens in Kerala and another 120 outside the state. A huge opening at the Kerala box office is definitely on cards as the holiday season has already begun.

The highly anticipated Savitri biopic, Mahanti is gearing up to hit screens on May 9. Keerthy Suresh plays the legendary actress Savitri in this Nag Ashwin directorial while Dulquer Salmaan essays the role of the late Gemini Ganesan. Samantha, ‘Arjun Reddy’ fame Vijay Devarakonda, Naga Chaitanya, Rajendra Prasad, Mohan Babu, Shalini Pandey and Prakash Raj are also part of the cast.

The makers have informed that the movie’s teaser will be released tomorrow (April 14). Mahanati is one of the most awaited movies in Telugu cinema this year majorly due to its biopic nature and the huge star cast. The movie traces Savitri’s life from the 1940s to 1980s and will feature those films she has acted with NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and other legends from the Telugu and Tamil film industry.

Savitri was briefly married to actor Gemini Ganesan and the movie will also show some lesser known details about their relationship. Dulquer, who is making his Telugu debut, is playing Gemini Ganesan while Naga Chaitanya is said to be playing his real-life grand father Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) in the movie. Prakash Raj is essaying the role of popular Telugu cinema producer Chakrapani. Samantha and Vijay Devarakonda will be seen as journalists in the movie.

Since Savitri was a hugely popular actress in all the southern film industries, the makers have planned the movie as a bilingual. The Tamil version is titled as ‘Nadigayar Thilagam’. If the ongoing TFPC strike ends by May 9, both the Tamil and Telugu versions are expected to release simultaneously.
