Kaala release most likely to be postponed!

The Tamil film industry is currently on an indefinite strike over rates charged by Digital Service Providers (DSPs). The industry has been hit severely by ongoing strikes, first by the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council (TNFPC) against the rates charged by DSPs and then the theatre owners strike, that has resulted in an indefinite shutdown starting from March 16 over the local body tax and the government’s rules regarding license renewal and theatre maintenance.

Movies slated for summer release have all been affected by the strike. Reports are doing the rounds that superstar Rajinikanth’s much awaited movie Kaala might be postponed as films ready for release and delayed due to strike will be given precedence. If it turns out to be true, Kaala which is originally scheduled for an April 27 release might get pushed to a later date in May.

Rajinikanth fans would obviously be disappointed as they are eagerly waiting for the movie’s release. Kaala marks the superstar’s reunion with Pa Ranjith after Kabali. The movie is basically a gangster flick based in the Mumbai underworld. Rajinikanth plays Kaala, a powerful don who heads the Tamil community in the slums of Dharavi.

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead and multiple national award winner Nana Patekar plays the antagonist. Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, actor Dhanush is producing Kaala under his banner Wunderbar Films Pvt Ltd. The makers are yet to make an official statement about the release postponement.

Nivin Pauly’s Hey Jude successfully completes 50 days in theatres!

In the age of piracy and digitization, it is a commendable feat for a movie to enjoy a fifty day theatrical run. Nivin Pauly’s Hey Jude has successfully managed to do so. This Shyamaprasad directorial was released on February 2. The movie, which tells the story of a differently abled Jude, was largely opened to positive reviews. Though the box office start was slow, it gradually picked up courtesy the positive word-of-mouth in social medias.

Hey Jude has also completed 50 days in Tamil Nadu. It is still being screened in a few centres in Chennai. Not many Malayalam movies manage to achieve this but Nivin’s popularity in TN has clearly worked in Hey Jude’s favor.

The movie scripted by newcomers Nirmal Sahadev and George Kanatt is basically a coming-of-age story of Jude, an oddball. How love and understanding transforms Jude after befriending with his neighbor Crystal and her father Sebastian, a neuropsychologist, forms the crux of the story.

Nivin Pauly as the differently abled Jude has given his career best performance. Though the movie has only a handful of characters, all of them – Siddique, Trisha, Vijay Menon and Neena Kurup – have given a performance worth remembering for a long time. Hey Jude also won a couple of accolades at the 48th Kerala State Awards. While costume designer Sakhi Elsa and dance choreographer Prasanna Sujit won awards for their works, actor Vijay Menon earned a Special Jury Mention.
