It’s nothing new for heroines to emerge overnight sensations. Malayalam cinema itself has seen plenty of such pretty heroines. Latest to the join the club is Aishwarya Lekshmi, fondly called Aishu by her fans. Though she made her debut with Nivin Pauly’s ‘Njandukalude Naatil Oridavela’, it was her endearing performance in ‘Mayaanadhi’ that won over the audience.

‘Mayaanadhi’ made her hugely popular among the Malayali audience, especially the youth. As the passionate and lovable Appu, Aishwarya Lekshmi gave one of the finest performances by a female actor in recent times. She was one among the top contenders for the ‘best heroine’ in all the recently held awards.

Aishwarya Lekshmi will be next seen opposite another audience favourite, Fahadh Faasil. Amal Neerad is directing this movie which is expected to start rolling by the end of next month. More details regarding the genre or other cast and crew. are not yet known. As of now, Aishu fans are eagerly looking forward to see her on-screen chemistry with a fantastic actor like Fahadh Faasil.

As per reports, this yet-to-be titled movie will start rolling in Vagamon. Amal Neerad himself will be producing the movie under his banner Amal Neerad Productions. Expectations are huge for this movie as Fahadh-Amal Neerad combo’s last outing, Iyobinte Pusthakam was a widely acclaimed one.

Kunchacko Boban starrer Kuttanadan Marpappa is gearing up to hit screens. Cinematographer Sreejith Vijay makes his directorial debut with this movie which stars Kunchacko Boban as a photographer and Aditi Ravi as his romantic interest. Shanthi Krishna is playing a crucial role as Kunchacko Boban’s mother in the movie.

A new song from Kuttandan Marpappa was released today in YouTube. Titled Sa Re Ga Ma, this is a fun track rendered by Niranj Suresh. Rahul Raj has composed this song which is penned by Vinayak Sasikumar. The lead pair, Kunchacko Boban and Aditi Ravi feature in the video.

Kuttanadan Marpappa promises to be a laugh riot. The movie’s supporting cast includes almost all the leading comedy actors in the industry, namely Hareesh Kanaran, Ramesh Pisharody, Soubin Shahir, Dharamjan, Aju Varghese, Salim Kumar, Innocent and Tiny Tom.

Arvind Krishna is the cinematographer and Rahul Raj is handling the music department. The movie is jointly funded by Haseeb Haneef, Noushad Alathur and Aji Medayil. It will be presented under the banners of Malayalam Movie Makers and Grande Film Corporation.

The makers are planning to release the movie when the summer vacation kick-starts. Since it is a fun filled entertainer, family audiences are expected to flock theatres in good numbers.

Unlike Baahubali, Kaaliyan will be a realistic period drama!

Prithviraj’s epic movie Kaaliyan was officially announced last month. Ad filmmaker Mahesh S is making his directorial debut with this movie based on the Southern Ballads (Thekkan Paatukal). BT Anil Kumar has scripted the movie after doing research works for nearly five years. Whenever a period flick is announced, it is bound to be compared with Baahubali.

SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali series is considered as the benchmark of period films in Indian cinema. Its humongous success, both critically and commercially, proved that spectacle heavy masala filmmaking has a massive scope in the domestic market. Made on a huge canvas, Baahubali had the best VFX quality in Indian cinema.

However, the makers of Kaaliyan affirm that their movie is not one like Baahubali. Unlike Baahubali, which was a VFX-heavy film, Kaaliyan has been planned to be made as realistic as possible with minimal graphic works. The team is also in talks with action choreographers working in the world famous TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. Their plan is to use novel and realistic stunts in the movie.

Kaaliyan movie tells the story of Kunchirakkottu Kali, a warrior who lived in the 17th century in Venad. Kaaliyan was a trusted disciple of Iravikkutty Pillai, a legendary warrior. Though Iraivikutty Pillai and his life story went on to be a part of history, Kaaliyan remained an unsung hero.

Prithviraj will be starting his preparations for Kaaliyan after he finishes works for his directorial debut ‘Lucifer’. Kaaliyan demands him to undergo intense training in martial arts. The actor who is well known for his commitment, will be working out to build a warrior’s physique. Veteran actor Sathyaraj will be seen in a prominent role in the movie. Other supporting actors will be cast through screenings that will be held in Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and in different parts of Kerala.

Bollywood’s leading composer trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy is making their Malayalam debut with Kaaliyan. Sujith Vaassudev has been signed as the cinematographer and National award winner Shajith Koyeri will be handling the sound design.

Mamankam second schedule to start rolling in May!

Mamankam team is currently on a schedule break. The movie went on floors last month in Mangalore. The first schedule was a brief one lasting for around the 15 days. The team shot for some important portions including a few action blocks. Now the makers have informed that the second leg of shoot will kick-start by the end of April or first week of May.

Mamankam is one of the most hyped Malayalam movies in recent years. It is a period drama starring Mammootty as a ‘chaaver’ (warrior). The movie marks the directorial debut of Sajeev Pillai, who is a former associate of Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Sajeev has scripted the movie after doing research works for nearly 12 years.

Venu Kunnampilly of Kavya Films is funding this highly ambitious project planned on a grand scale. Apart from Mammootty, top stars from other industries will also be part of the movie. The female lead’s part will be played by a Bollywood actress while a young star from Tamil industry will be seen as the second hero. Neeraj Madhav, ‘Queen’ fame Dhruv, Sunil Sukhada, Meghanathan and Sohan Seenulal are already part of the supporting cast.

The movie is based on the medieval fair, Mamankam, where brave warriors from across the country would come together to showcase their skills at combat. Mammootty plays a ‘Chaaver’ (warrior) in this movie, which revolves around the life of these warriors who plot to defeat the Zamorin rulers.

Mamankam’s technical crew includes cinematographer Ganesh Rajavelu a.k.a Jim Ganesh, action choreographer Kaecha, composer M Jayachandran RC and VFX supervisor Kamala Kannan, who has worked in several such high profile projects in South Indian cinema.

Horror flicks are a rarity in Malayalam cinema unlike neighboring industries like Kollywood where horror films, most of them horror-comedies, are being released every Friday, literally. Prithviraj’s Ezra was the lasted noted horror movie in Malayalam. Now debutant Althaf Rahman is coming up with a horror film titled ‘Neeli’.

Mamta Mohandas and Anoop Menon are playing the lead roles in the movie. Neeli looks like a female-centric movie as the first look poster features only Mamta Mohandas. Kalliyankattu Neeli is a very popular ghost story in Kerala and even a movie of the same name was made way back in 1979. It remains to be seen if Neeli, the upcoming Mamta Mohandas starrer, has something to do with Kalliyankattu Neeli.

Mamta Mohandas has also signed for ‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ in which she has been paired opposite opposite Asif Ali. Jis Joy of ‘Bicycle Thieves’ and ‘Sunday Holiday’ fame is directing this movie. Anoop Menon on the other hand is busy shooting for ‘Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal’, which he is also scripting. His next release is B Tech, in which he is playing a crucial role alongside Asif Ali.

Official: Mammootty to play YS Rajasekhara Reddy in his biopic Yatra!

Recently we had reported about Mammootty being approached for the biopic on late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. The project has now been officially announced. Director Mahi Raghav announced the big news through his Twitter handle. The biopic has been titled as ‘Yatra’.

YS Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR, is one of the most politicians that Andhra Pradesh has ever seen. YSR died in an air crash in 2009 after the helicopter carrying him crashed in a dense forest. He was so popular that hundreds of his followers committed suicide upon hearing his death. This upcoming biopic will showcase some of the important aspects of his life and his political journey.

Mahi Raghav, who has made movies like Paathshala and Anando Brahma, has been working on the script for the biopic for sometime now. He was in Kochi last month to discuss about the project and impressed by the narrative, Mammootty agreed to do it. There were rumors about Suriya and Nayanthara also starring in the movie but the director has denied it.

In a recent interview to a leading daily, the director is quoted saying, “My focus so far was completely on getting the right actor for the lead role. Now that Mammootty sir has came on board, I’ll start working on the rest of the cast. We haven’t approached anyone yet for other roles. I’ll be meeting Mammootty sir soon and will work for the characterization together. We are planning to make the film on a big scale and lot of homework and research will go into it.”

Yatra will be produced jointly by Vijay Chilla and Shashi Devi under the banner of 70mm Entertainments. The makers are expected to make an official announcement very soon, with details about the entire cast and when the project would start rolling.

Recently, after the shocking demise of actress Sridevi in Dubai, there were several issues relating to flying her mortal remains back to India. Since it was an unnatural death, the embassy officials had to get a lot of clearances from the UAE government before they could get the body back to India. It was the timely intervention from Malayali businessman Ashraf Thamarassery that helped embassy officials to complete the formalities in quick time.

Ashraf is a social worker in the UAE who helps repatriate the bodies of foreigners free of cost. From poor laborers to the elite, Ashraf has helped repatriate nearly 4,700 bodies to 38 countries across the world. Though Ashraf is quite popular among the expats in UAE, it was his assistance to clear Sridevi’s papers that brought him to the limelight.

Ashraf’s inspiring story is now being made into a movie with none other than Megastar Mammootty starring in it. Actor Tini Tom is turning a scriptwriter with this movie. Tiny Tom himself revealed this recently in Dubai. Along with Mammootty, Soubin Shahir and Hareesh Kanaran will be seen in crucial roles. Theatre artists and some aspiring actors from UAE will also be part of the movie.

Tini Tom is now working on the script jointly with Satheesh. While discussing the subject with Mammootty, the actor had asked Tiny Tom not to make it as a documentary. They are planning to make the movie as an inspiring tale with the right mix of humour and emotions. Interestingly, the movie will start from the episode of Sridevi’s death and the subsequent events. Dileep recently finished shooting his portions for Kammaara Sambhavam and has also completed the dubbing. He was supposed to head to Dubai for the second schedule of his upcoming movie Professor Dinkan. But the latest we hear is that the team is planning to reshoot the whole movie. Apparently, the makers are not happy with the way the initially shot portions have come out.

Professor Dinkan is touted to be a 3D fantasty film. Veteran cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Ramachandra Babu is directing the movie. Rafi is scripting the movie which features Dileep as a magician. The movie revolves around an ambitious magician whose aim is to astonish the world with a risky magic trick. But one such attempts fails miserably and ends up affecting a lot of people. How he tries to patch up with the people and undo the damage through minor magic tricks forms the plot.

Recently, the makers had also reworked the script to suit the family audience. Dileep’s arrest in the actress assault case and the subsequent events that followed are said to be the reason why the team is planning to shoot the whole movie once again. Professor Dinkan is produced by Sanal Thottam under the banner of New TV.

Confirmed: Tovino’s Theevandi set for Vishu release!

The Vishu season is closing in and like in the past, this year also a handful of Malayalam movies are eyeing the festive release. As per reports from trade sources, Prithviraj’s Ranam, Dileep’s Kammaara Sambhavam and Jayaram-Kunchacko Boban starrer Panchavarnathatha are slated for Vishu release and latest to the join the race is Tovino’s Theevandi.

Theevandi marks the directorial debut of Fellini TP. The movie scripted by another newcomer, Vini Viswa Lal, is said to be a political satire. Tovino plays the role of a lazy unemployed youngster named Bineesh in this movie. Samyukhtha Menon, who essays the role of a government employee, is paired opposite Tovino. From the title and promos, we presume that cigarettes or smoking have something to do with the movie’s narrative.

Theevandi’s supporting cast includes a bunch of newcomers and seasoned actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Saiju Kurup, Shammi Thilakan and last year’s National award winner Surabhi Lakshmi. Kailas Menon composes the music and cinematography is done by Gautham Sankar. Appu Bhattadhari is handling the edits.

August Cinema, one of the leading banners in Malayalam film industry, is funding this movie. Official announcement regarding the release date has not yet been made.

Last week, director KV Anand had officially announced his upcoming movie with Suriya. Lyca Productions is funding this film, tentatively titled as Suriya 37. Pre-production works including the casting process is currently progressing. Recently, social medias were abuzz with reports about the ‘wink’ sensation Priya Prakash Varrier being signed to play one of the female leads in the movie.

However, director KV Anand has now come out denying the reports as baseless. He has clarified that he has not even approached Priya for the film. He added that his team is looking for a big league heroine to play Suriya’s pair in the movie. This is not the first time that such reports are being cooked up about Priya. Ever since she became a nationwide sensation, there have been several rumors about she being cast opposite big stars.

Director Omar Lulu who is introducing Priya with his film ‘Oru Adaar Love’ had recently confirmed that she was offered a role in Bollywood star Ranveer Singh’s upcoming movie Simmba. Rohit Shetty is directing the movie and Karan Johar is backing it. Apparently, they are keen to launch Priya in Bollywood but the teenage actress has not yet taken call on it. Reportedly, Priya is also in talks with Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury of ‘Pink’ fame but an official word has not yet been given.
