Salim Kumar to direct Jayaram and Mamta Mohandas!

Actor Salim Kumar actor has tried his hand in filmmaking and has helmed two films – Compartment and Karutha Joothan. Both the movies were offbeat films that discussed about some serious issues. Now, Salim Kumar is changing tracks as his next directorial will be a commercial entertainer.

Jayaram and Mamta Mohandas have been roped in to play the lead roles. This is their fourth film together as they have previously acted in films like Katha Thudarunnu, Njanum Ente Familiyum and Madhuchandralekha. Apart from directing, Salim Kumar will also be playing a prominent role in the upcoming movie.

Salim Kumar’s debut directorial Compartment discussed about the problems of special children. All the lead characters in the movie were played by children who were mentally and physically challenged. But, in an unusual move, he withdrew the film from theatres as a protest against the lukewarm reception accorded to the film by film-viewers and theater owners. His second directorial Karutha Joothan deals with the Jewish history in Kerala of 2000 years. Salim Kumar’s story for the movie won him a Kerala State Award last year.

Jayaram, meanwhile is going through a rough patch. His last release Achayans was an average success in the box office eventhough critics slammed the movie. His next release will be Aakashamittayi, the official remake of Samuthiraknai’s Tamil movie Appa. Mamta Mohandas on the other hand is busy shooting for Fahadh Faasil’s Carbon, directed by ace cinematographer Venu.

Alwin Antony of Ananya Films and Dr Zachariah Thomas of UGM Entertainment will be jointly funding the upcoming movie directed by Salim Kumar. The movie is slated to go on floors on October 10.

Kalidas Jayaram to play the lead in Alphonse Puthren’s next movie?

Promising young filmmaker Alphonse Puthren has been on a break ever since the release of Premam in 2015. The movie emerged as one of the highest grossing Malayalam movies of all time. Ever since then, the audience have been waiting to hear from Alphonse about his next movie.

Earlier this year, the director finally announced that he will be doing a Tamil film as his next. Eventhough there were speculations about Aphonse teaming up with Nivin Pauly once again, the director had made it clear that Nivin will not be a part of his next movie.

Latest buzz is that Kalidas Jayaram being approached to play the lead in Alphonse’s upcoming movie. Kalidas made his debut appearance in Tamil last year with the movie Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum. It was recently that he finished shooting for Poomaram, which marks his Malayalam debut as a lead actor. The Abrid Shine directorial is expected to hit screens by the end of this year. A confirmation about Kalidas signing for Alphonse’s film is still awaited.

Alphonse Puthren has made a mark for himself with his first two films itself. Neram was a commercially successful Tamil-Malayalam bilingual while Premam was a smashing hit all across South India. The director had recently revealed that his next movie will be a musical entertainer. He has also retained his two trusted friends/technicians- cinematographer Anend C Chandran and composer Rajesh Murugesan for his upcoming movie.

More details regarding the project is expected to be made official very soon.

Parava Review: This one’s gonna ‘fly’ places

Parava Review: This one’s gonna ‘fly’ places

Soubin Shahir, Anwar Rasheed and Dulquer Salmaan. These three names were more than enough to heighten the expectations among the audience. Even without a teaser or a trailer, Parava managed to create a great pre-release buzz. The movie has finally hit screens today and let’s see if it has lived up to the massive hype.

Soubin Shahir’s debut directorial takes us to the shady shores of Mattanchery where the locals lead a life that is in stark contrast to the ‘urban’ Kochi. Two teenage boys play the protagonists in the movie which is primarily centred around pigeon rearing and racing. I’m not getting too much into the plot to avoid the spoilers.

Soubin along with his co-writer Muneer Ali have scripted a superb tale that has the right mix of humour, emotions, action and thrill. The theme explored in the movie is something unseen in the grounds of Malayalam cinema and the writers have successfully manged to make it as realistic as possible.

Casting deserves a loud round of applause, especially the two boys who have given excellent performances. Shane Nigam once again proves what a brilliant performer he is; wish he gets cast in more such films. Dulquer Salmaan appears in an extended cameo role. Though his screen presence is limited, the actor makes the most out of it with his effortless performance. Dulquer’s presence will certainly attract the youngsters to theatres. Veterans Siddique, Harisree Ashokan, Indrans and Jaffer Idukki justified their casting. Aashiq Abu, Shine Tom Chacko, Srinda, Jacob Gregory and several newcomers are also part of the cast. Watch out for Sreenath Bhasi and the man himself, Soubin Shahir.

Technically, Parava is top-notch. The efforts that the team has taken to shoot the scenes involving the birds are there to be seen. Littil Swayamp, noted for his amazing works in Thaikkudam Bridge’s Navarasa series, has wonderfully captured the narrow crowded lanes of Mattanchery. Bird’s-eye-view shots are aplenty and unlike most films, the story demands it here. Rex Vijayan’s music is another standout element of the movie. I particularly liked the electrifying background score in the climax portions.

Soubin Shahir, as a director, has made his arrival in style with a well crafted film. Parava is the latest entry to the new wave of experimental movies that have been sweeping Mollywood for sometime now. Go, grab your tickets and catch Parava.

Sushant Singh Rajput to play The Great Khali in the wrestler’s biopic

Sushant Singh Rajput to play The Great Khali in the wrestler’s biopic

It’s the season of bipoics in Bollywood. The audience have already been treated to the biopics of sporting icons like Mary Kom, Milkha Singh, Azharuddin, MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar. As per latest reports in Bollywood medias, a leading production house is now planning to make a biopic on a popular wrestler’s life. We are talking about none other than The Great Khali aka Dalip Singh Rana.

Reportedly, Sushant Singh Rajput has been approached to play the lead in the gigantic wrestler’s biopic. Suhsant is hugely popular for his performance in Indian cricketer MS Dhoni’s biopic, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.

A source is quoted saying to Bombay Times, “The biopic is on the life of wrestler Dalip Singh Rana, better known as Khali or The Great Khali in WWE circle. The studio has spoken to the Punjabi wrestler and he has given them the rights to make a film on his life. Sushant has been approached to play the titular role and he has in principle agreed to do the film.”

Further adding the insider said, “People only know about the sporty side of this Indian-born American semi-retired professional wrestler, promoter and actor. But there’s an untold story behind his super success. He was an officer for the Punjab state police force and struggled for years before making it big in wrestling. The story will be about his journey.”

The actual challenge for the makers of this ambitious movie lies in making Sushant look convincing as Khali. The actor has a great physique, however, to look like The Great Khali, he would have to put on lot of efforts. It will be a huge challenge for Sushant to transform himself to look like the wrestler. Khali stands at a towering seven feet one inch and weighs about 157 kgs whereas Sushant’s height is just over six feet and weighs 77 kgs.

Industry insiders opine that unless there’s a lot of VFX involved, it’s difficult to pull off a film on Khali. No hero in Bollywood will look convincing as The Great Khali unless there’s CGI. Before jumping into conclusions, let’s wait for an official confirmation from the makers.

Meanwhile, Sushant is busy working on Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath opposite Sara Ali Khan. He is also playing the lead in Chanda Mama Door Ke, a space film in which he will be seen playing an astronaut.

Anjali Menon’s next will have Prithviraj, Nazriya Nazim and Parvathy in the lead roles

Anjali Menon, one of the most promising filmmakers around, was on a break after giving the sensational blockbuster Bangalore Days in 2015. She was away from all the limelight for a while before working on a script, a love story, with Dulquer Salmaan in the lead, but unfortunately the project could not materialize.

Now, the filmmaker is busy with the pre-production works of her next directorial which reportedly stars Prithviraj, Nazriya Nazim and Parvathy in the lead roles. Prithviraj has already been confirmed as the makers had even released a casting call for teeange boys to play his younger part. The casting of Parvathy and Nazriya comes a pleasant surprise.

Both the actresses have previously worked with Anjali Menon in Bangalore Days. Prithviraj has also done a cameo role in the director’s debut film Manjadikuru. More details regarding the genre or technical crew of the upcoming movie is not yet known. It is being produced by Rejaputhra Visual Media in association with Little Films India.

Anjali has proven her mettle, both as a filmmaker and a scenarist with her works like Manjadikuru, Ustad Hotel and Bangalore Days. While Manjadikuru bagged several accolades at the regional and international level, Ustad Hotel, written by Anjali, won a couple of National awards – for best popular film providing wholesome entertainment and best dialogues. Bangalore Days is one of the biggest grossers in Malayalam cinema history.

Obviously, expectations will be massive for Anjali Menon’s next movie. An official word regarding when the movie will actually go on floors is still awaited.
