15 films in 16 years: Shafi’s memorable journey as a superhit filmmaker!

Director Shafi is best known for his comedy movies. The veteran, who has been in the industry for nearly two decades, has helmed fourteen movies and the upcoming Biju Menon starrer Sherlock Toms marks his landmark fifteenth film. Shafi’s films have huge popularity among the families thanks to some quality humour. Let’s take a look at the movies that Shafi has helmed so far.

1) One Man Show (2001)

Shafi made his directorial debut with this full on fun entertainer that had Jayaram, Lal and Samyuktha Varma in the lead roles. The movie was scripted jointly by Shafi’s brother Rafi and Mecartin. One Man Show enjoyed a theatrical run of over 150 days and emerged as a huge commercial success.

2) Kalyanaraman (2002)

This Dileep starrer is a favourite among the audience even today when it is telecasted in channels. Salim Kumar and Innocent’s rib tickling comedy numbers are still used for social media trolls. Benny P Nayarambalam scripted this family entertainer that also starred Navya Nair, Lal, Lalu Alex, Jyothirmayi and Kunchako Boban.

3) Pulival Kalyanam (2003)

Another hilarious entertainer from Shafi. Eventhough, Jayasurya and Kavya Madhavan played the lead roles, the movie’s USP was the excellent comic numbers of Salim Kumar, Jagathy Sreekumar, Cochin Haneefa and Harisree Ashokan. Pulival Kalyanam, scripted by Udhayakrishna-Sibi K Thomas duo, was Jayasurya’s first solo blockbuster.

4) Thommanum Makkalum (2005)

For his next, Shafi roped in Mammootty and Lal to play the lead roles. This tale of Thomman (Rajan P Dev) and his two spoilt sons was scripted by Benny P Nayarambalam. The film was among the highest grossing Malayalam films of 2005. The movie was later remade in Tamil and Kannada with top stars reprising Mammootty’s and Lal’s characters.

5) Majaa (2005)

This remake of Thommanum Makkalum marked Shafi’s debut in Tamil cinema. Vikram, Pasupathy and Asin played the lead roles. Majaa was also a successful affair at the box office.

6) Mayavai (2007)

Shafi once again teamed up with Mammootty for Mayavi, a complete commercial entertainer. Written by the Rafi-Mecartin duo, the movie also starred Kumar, Manoj K. Jayan, Gopika, Vijayaraghavan and Saikumar. Mayavi was the highest grosser of the year and also one of Mammootty’s biggest ever successes during it’s time of release. The movie was later remade in Tamil with Arjun in the lead role.

7) Chocolate (2007)

Chocolate is arguably Shafi’s most stylish film. The treatment was very fresh with a women’s college as the backdrop. Prithviraj, Roma, Jayasurya and Samvrutha Sunil essayed the lead roles. This campus based entertainer was scripted by Sachi-Sethu. Chocolate was another superhit film which was also remade in Telugu as Chalaki with Aditya Babu.

8) Lollipop (2008)

Inspired by the success of Chocolate, Shafi roped in almost the same set of actors for his next movie, Lollipop. Prithviraj, Roma, Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya and Bhavana played the lead roles. However, the team could not repeat the magic of Chocolate as Lollipop ended up as an avergae grosser at the box office.

9) Chattambinadu (2009)

Chattambinadu was Shafi’s third film with Mammootty. Benny P Nayarambalam scripted this movie which also starred Lakshmi Rai, Siddique, Manoj K. Jayan, Vinu Mohan, and Suraj Venjarammoodu. Mammootty himself produced the movie under his banner Play House Pictures. Chattambinadu was the Christmas winner of 2009 and emerged as a superhit.

10) Marykkundoru Kunjaadu (2010)

The trio of Dileep-Shafi and Benny P Nayarambalam teamed up once again in 2010 after the blockbuster success of Kalayanaraman. Marykkundoru Kunjaadu was a simple rural-comedy entertainer that had Dileep, Bhavana and Biju Menon in the lead roles. The movie provided a big image makeover for Biju Menon. It successfully completed 150 days of theatrical run and eventually became the third highest grossing Malayalam film of 2010.

11) Makeup Man (2011)

Sachi-Sethu scripted this movie that had Jayaram and Sheela in tbe lead roles. A newly married couple ends up in the world of cinema due to their circumstances. Prithviraj and Kunchacko Boban also appeared in cameo roles. The movie emerged as a superhit at the box office.

12) Venicile Vyapari (2011)

Shafi’s second film of the year had Mammootty in the lead role. James Albert scripted this movie. Kavya Madhavan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Poonan Bajwa, Biju Menon, Salim Kunar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vijayaraghavan and many others in supporting roles.

13) 101 Weddings (2012)

This was probably the only complete failure in Shafi’s career. Based on the director’s story, Kalavoor Ravikumar scripted the movie. Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya, Biju Menon, Samvrutha Sunil, and Bhama played the lead roles. Shafi’s brother Rafi and Mecartin funded this movie.

14) Two Counties (2015)

After 101 Weddings, Shafi took a break of three years before he made a comeback with Two Countries. Rafi scripted this movie which starred Dileep, Mamta Mohandas, Isha Talwar, Mukesh, Aju Varghese and many others. This family entertainer emerged as a huge blockbuster and is said to have done a business of over Rs 50 crores.

15) Sherlock Toms (2017)

Biju Menon’s Sherlock Toms promises to be yet another fun from Shafi. The movie’s story is penned by Najeem Koya and the dialogues are written by Shafi. Sachi, Shafi and Najeem Koya have jointly written the screenplay for this movie. Miya George plays the female lead in the movie which also stars Srinda Arhaan, Salim Kumar, Suresh Krishna, Kalabhavan Shajon and Vijay Raghavan among others. The movie is being produced by Global United Media.

Ranjith’s next with Niranj and Anu Sithara titled as Bilathikadha

As a director, most of Ranjith’s last few films have been with big stars like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Prithviraj and Dulquer Salmaan. However, his next movie will be a refreshing change as it has the two-film-old Niranj and Anu Sithara in the lead roles. The movie has been titled as Bilathikadha.

Niranj, the son of actor Maniyan Pilla Raju, recently made his debut as a lead actor with the movie titled Bobby. Anu Sithara is noted for her role in movies like Ramante Edanthottam, Achayans, Happy Wedding etc. This upcoming movie also stars Kalabhavan Shajon, Suresh Krishna, Kaniha, Dileesh Pothan and Kottayan Nazeer in supporting roles. There are also unconfirmed reports about a superstar playing a cameo role.

Bilathikadha is scripted by noted scenarist Sethu. Incidentally, this is only the third time that Ranjith will be directing a movie for which he has not written the script. Reportedly, the movie will be shot completely in London. Prashanth Nair will be cranking the camera and Sandeep will be handling the editing department.

Bilathikadha is being produced by Maha Subair under the banner of Varnachitra Big Screen.

The writer has previously collaborated with Mammootty in Ranjith’s Puthan Panam, where he helped the veteran star with the Kasargod dialect. Shaji Kumar has also worked in the scripting of couple of widely acclaimed movies – Kanyaka Talkies and Take Off.

Cinematographer Shamdat’s debut directorial Streetlights, ad filmmaker Sharrath Sandith’s Parole, scriptwriter Sethu’s Kozhithankachan and Shaji Padoor’s Abrahaminte Santhathikal : A Police Story are some of the other projects in Mammootty’s kitty.

From Guinness Pakru to Anwar Rasheed – Interview with lyricist Vinayak Sasikumar

From Guinness Pakru to Anwar Rasheed – Interview with lyricist Vinayak Sasikumar

Malayalam cinema, unarguably, is going through a spectacular phase. The growth of an industry is upwards only when fresh talents emerge and they find acceptance among the audience. Passionate youngsters are knocking the doors of the industry every single day and the Malayali audience are gleefully welcoming them. We caught up with one such youngster, who is making waves with his words.

Lyric writing is not as easy as it looks like. While filmmakers have the liberty to visually present a movie in a duration of 120 or more minutes, lyricists have to deliver the goods in a matter of just 5 minutes. It is their rhyming-yet-meaningful words that enhance the mood of a particular situation.

Malayalam cinema is lucky to have had the service of legends like Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, ONV Kurup, Gireesh Puthenchery, Rafeeq Ahmed and many others. It is an arena that has been ruled by seniors but today we have Vinayak Sasikumar, a 23-year-old youngster whose songs are continuously making it to top of the charts.

‘Thazhvaram’ in Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, ‘Thaniye’ in Guppy and ‘Oh Rabba’ in Godha shows the versatility of this youngster. More recently, the song ‘Pranavakaram’ from the movie ‘E’ has won him lot of appreciation. We recently had a casual chat with Vinayak where we discussed about music, his early days, aspirations and much more.

Lyric writing is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is not something most cine aspirants would cho naturally. How did you land as a lyricist and are you formally trained in music?

First of all I didn’t choose lyric writing. It just happened that way. And yeah, I’m trained in music. From my childhood itself I’ve been attending music classes and I learned to play keyboard till my 12th standard. During that time I wanted to be a composer and that’s when I started writing lyrics. I used to write lyrics for my own compositions and gradually I started to concentrate more on my writings.

There’s this eternal doubt regarding how this process of developing a tune into a song happen? Are the tunes composed first and lyrics written accordingly or is it the other way around?

95% of the time it’s tune first. Even legends like Vidhyasagar, who have been in this arena for over twenty years compose the tunes first. I have written lyrics for over 25 songs and all of them were written according to the rhythm and mood of the already composed tunes.

As a lyricist, do you think writing the lyrics first is a bit more comfortable as you can experiment and feel a lot easier?

Easier, no! but definitely more freedom as there are no constarints. When we write lyrics in order to suit the tune, there is a certain meter that has to be maintained. Whereas, in the other way it is like writing a poem; we have no such limitations.

Cinema is evolving and the concept of music is also changing. The format of five must-have songs is a thing of the past now (atleast in Malayalam). While writing lyrics, do you get to read the script beforehand or do they just let you know the situation?

It depends, sometimes I get to read the script even before the commencement of shoot. There are also occassions where scenes are shown and I’ve to pen lyrics accordingly, which actually has an added advantage as I’ll be knowing the mood of the song. Songs in movies like Parava and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi were written that way.

You are comparatively lot younger than your peers. How welcoming is our industry to youngsters?

I’m someone who entered the industry without any backing or help from industry insiders. Just like other aspirants who wish to become actors and filmmakers, I kept looking for chances and that’s how my first film happened. I was 18 years old when I wrote lyrics for Kuttiyum Kolum, my first film. That’s a very young age for a lyricist and in that sense our industry has been welcoming fresh talents.

What would be some of the biggest compliments that you’ve received for your work?

My friends and family have always been supportive. I believe that my aim should be to fulfill the director and composer’s needs. Because they are ones who belived in me and it is my duty to pay them back. I’ve got the best of compliments from all those whom I’ve worked with. Besides that, the biggest compliments will be the ones I got from my seniors. I’m a huge fan of Vidyasagar sir and fortunately got a chance to work with him. He composed tunes and asked me to write lyrics accordingly. It was like a workshop and that was a great learning experience for an youngster like me. He introduced me to Sathyan Anthikad sir and spoke high of me. To get that sort of appreciation from a musician of such big stature is truly a blessing. Similarly, M Jayachandran sir, with whom I recently worked in Pullikkaran Staraa, has also encouraged me a lot. These are moments that I would always cherish.

Do you have any regrets?

Regrets, no.. but yes, I’ve had some missing. I was working in Chennai till last month, so I’ve missed the physical involvement of a lyricist that is required when a song is shaping up. It is a great experience to see the process of how a song develops. While writing in the presence of the director and composer, corrections can be made immediately. Also the instant response that can be seen from their facial expressions gives a big satisfaction. I missed all that while I was away in Chennai. Mostly, I used to write the lyrics and send it through mail or Whatsapp. Also I’ve not been able to attend functions like audio launch or success celebrations due to my busy work life. Now I’ve resigned my job and moved to Kochi. Earlier, I was very passive as a lyricist doing just 2-3 films in a year, now I’m planning to be more active and concentrate entirely on lyric writing.

What is your take on doing cover versions for old songs?

As a lyricist, I don’t have any objections but as a listener I’m not a big fan. I acknowledge the fact that doing cover versions is a very creative work. The legendary MT Vasudevan sir has given his perspectives to Vadakkan Pattukal and Mahabharatha. Likewise, these singers and musicians are giving their perspectives. If they succeed in doing so, then well and good but once the essence of the original is missed, it looks very odd. Most of the cover versions that are releasing these days have failed to retain the original magic and end up as a mess.

Finally, what are your future projects?

Mammootty’s Pullikkaran Staraa was the last to come out. Next on the line is Parava. I’ve written all the songs in the movie and it was such a wonderful experience. I’m also working on Anwar Rasheed’s Trance.

We, at Onlookers Media wish all success for Vinayak in his future endeavours. Looking forward to more from this amazingly talented youngster
