Fahadh Faasil is one of the very few actors in India who has been doing all kinds of challenging roles: Velaikaaran director Mohan Raja

As Fahadh Faasil celebrates his 35th birthday today, the makers of his debut Tamil film Velikaaran revealed his character poster. The actor is playing the antagonist in the film which stars Sivakarthikeyan and Nayanthara in the lead roles. Velaikaaran is directed by Mohan Raja, whose last film Thani Oruvan was a massive success.

There are talks about Fahadh’s character in Velaikaaran being on similar lines to Aravind Swamy’s in Thani Oruvan. However, the director reveals that his character has many shades and will appear throughout the film.

Mohan Raja believes that an actor can inspire a filmmaker to write a better character. He says, “Fahadh is one of the very few actors in India who has been doing all kinds of challenging roles and bringing him on board helped me to create a new, evolved antagonist.”

The director spilled more beans about the movie in a recent interview. Apparently, there are different shades to the relationship between the lead characters played by Fahahdh and Sivakarthikeyan. It begins as a friendship; there is also a guru-sishya element and it also has a clash of personalities.

Music department is handled by young sensation Anirudh Ravichander. The movie produced by RD Raja’s 24AM Studios is slated to hit screens worldwide on September 29.

Mohanlal’s Odiyan is a very tough and challenging project: Peter Hein

Odiyan, the much awaited Mohanlal starrer, is currently in its pre-production stage. The makers are busy with location scouting, assembling the crew members and other technical works before the project actually goes on floors next month.

Director VA Sreekuamr Menon, Antony Perumbavoor, cameraman Shaji Kumar, stunt coordinator Peter Hein and some other crew members were recently in Palakkad for finalizing the locations.

While speaking to the media present there, Peter Hein revealed how challenging it is to choreograph the stunts in Odiyan. Peter Hein has previously worked with Mohanlal in Pulimurugan, for which he won the inaugral National award for best stunt choreographer.

However, the demands of both these projects are entirely different and Odiyan is a lot more challenging.

Peter Hein said, “Working on Pulimurugan was different. It was a man vs wild subject where Mohanlal sir played a hunter who used to hunt down tigers. But Odiyan is differnt. Here, he has to transform into various animals and that is quite a challenging task.”

Odiyan is a fantasy film that will have a mix of action, romance and magical realism. The movie, written by National award winner Harikrishnan is primarily about Odividya, a black magic practice, and people who practice it, called Odiyan. There are a lot of stories and myths about Odiyans and their life in Kerala’s folklore.

An Odiyan is someone who can transform into any shape; like an animal or a reptile. Mohanlal is playing the role of Manikyan, a man who is mastered in Odividya. He is a fabulous athlete who can run on four legs and jump higher than normal people. He will be seen from the age of 30 to 65 in multiple looks in the movie.

Since the character demands tremendous flexibility and agility, Mohanlal will be shedding close to 15 kilos. The movie’s first look poster had Mohanlal in a clean shaven look with a lot trimmer physique. It is learnt that the 57-year-old superstar will be training hard to achieve a similar look.

Odiyan also stars Manju Warrier and Sathya Raj in prominent roles. Pre-production works for the movie is currently progressing in full swing. Sabu Cyril is in charge of Odiyan’s production design. Mohanlal’s own banner Aashirvad Cinemas is funding this big budget movie. Palakkad, Pollachi, Hyderabad and Varanasi have been finalized as the major locations.

The movie won rave reviews from all corners for the realistic treatment and fabulous performance from all the actors. The movie was celebrated nationally with filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Karthik Subbaraj, Pa Ranjith etc heaping praise on the movie.

Now, if reports are to believed, Angamaly Diaries is getting a Telugu version. The remake will have noted actor Vishak Sen in the lead role. Angamaly’s story will be set in Hyderabad and the movie will explore the gangster culture in the locality. The director is yet to be finalized but there are reports that the Telugu remake will be adapted to suit sensibilities of the Telugu audience.

Angamaly Diaries had around 86 newcomers as part of its cast. One of the movie’s major highlights was the freshness in acting by these newbies. On a similar note, the Telugu version will also feature a host of debutant actors. Casting call for the movie was released and the auditions are already underway.

Angamaly Diaries, scripted by actor Chemban Vinod Jose, is the story of a group of youngsters in the Angamaly region. Thalapathy Vijay appreciates Ajith’s Vivegam

Vijay and Ajith are two of the biggest stars in South India, both of whom have an enviable fan following. Even while the fans are fighting over their films and stardom, the two actors have always maintained a very healthy relationship. Both the stars are eyeing a box office hunt this year with their high profile releases; Mersal and Vivegam.

Ruben, one of Kollywood’s most sought after editors is the common link in Mersal and Vivegam. He is simultaneously working in both these biggies. Recently, in an interview to a popular online media he revealed how Thalapathy Vijay appreciated his work in Ajith’s Vivegam.

Apparently, Vijay had watched Vivegam’s teaser and was highly impressed by the slick cuts. Varnyathil Aashanka Review: Fairly engaging

Varnyathil Aashanka Review: Fairly engaging

Actor-turned-filmmaker Sidharth Bharathan’s third outing as a director Varnyathil Aashanka was released today. Morning shows in all the centres were cancelled due to some technical reasons. The movie, scripted by noted theatre writer/director Thrissur Gopalji stars Kunchacko Boban, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Manikandan Achari, Chemban Vinod Jose and Shine Tom Chacko in major roles. From the outset, Varnyathil Aashanka promised to be a fun entertainer but let’s see how it actually turned out to be.

The movie’s basic plot is about four loafers/crooks’ attempt to make some quick money. They hatch a plan to rob a jewellery. This is where they encounter a fifth guy, who has got a back story of his own. Varnyathil Aashanka does not boast of an out of the box storyline but its the series of interesting events that take the narrative forward. However, towards the climax we get the feel of an abrupt ending and the lag in the initial half does not work either.

Director Sidharth Bharathan has done a decent job in making the movie a fairly engaging one. Writer Thrissur Gopalji has added a very interesting satirical tone to this heist movie. Through the course of the narrative, the movie reflects the current socio-political issues in the society. Demonetization, closing down of bars, hartal, political violence are all talked about in the movie.

One major blip that I found was the duration of scenes. Most scenes seemed very lengthy and unnecessarily dragged. Bavan Sreekumar could have edited the movie a bit more tightly, especially in the first half. Eventhough, the movie didn’t have any scope for songs, Prashanth Pillai made sure he impresses with his background score.

Coming to the performance side, it was Suraj Venjaramoodu who scored well above all the other actors. He comes only late into the movie but ensured that he scored the maximum. His growth as a character actor after winning the national award is quite impressive and Varnyathil Aashanka is a testimony for that. His performance as Dhayanandhan, a cunning-yet-fun unemployed family man, is a treat to watch.

Kunchako Boban’s Kavatta Sivan was contrasting to the usual sophisticated roles that one would expect from him but he was good playing this role. Chemban Vinod Jose, Manikandan Achari and Shine Tom Chacko justified their casting especially the former whose unassuming goofiness leaves the audience in splits.

Varnyathil Aashanka is a fairly engaging movie that has its share of flaws. Nevertheless, Sidharth Bharathan and team have delivered a good one time watch for those who seek some much needed entertainment.
