Oru Mexican Aparatha review :  An entertaining campus political drama

Tom Emmatty’s campus political drama Oru Mexican Aparatha has finally been released today. The movie starring Tovino Thomas in the lead had high expectations majorly due to it’s slant towards the communist ideology.

The movie starts with the death of Kochaniyan (Tovino Thomas) who was one of the pioneer SFY activists in Maharajas campus during the 1970s period. Cut staright to the early 2000s and we are shown Paul’s (Tovino Thomas) college life in the same campus.

Now, KSQ has the final word in the campus and the party’s headed by Roopesh (Roopesh Peethambaran). KSQ activists deny the freedom of the students in the campus. Despite all that, no one is daring enough to raise their voice against them. Will Paul and his friends be able to raise their party’s flag forms the rest of the story.

Director Tom Emmatty, who has also written the movie, has succeeded in engaging the audience with a lively screenplay. However, some portions looked half baked. At several crucial junctures, the screenplay lacked the clarity that opened up the loopholes. A bit more focus on the writing would have turned Oru Mexican Aparatha into a quality political drama.

Paul and Kochaniyan was safe in Tovino Thomas’s hands. Roopesh Peethambaran in his comeback is superb as the antagonist. Neeraj Madhav has a solid role and the actor has handled it with a lot of maturity. It’s time he shifts gears from sidekick roles to performance oriented ones. Gayathri Suresh should seriously consider changing her style of dialogue delivery. It has become overtly repetitive that can easily frown a few faces. Harish Perady, who essayed the role of the senior communist leader, seemed to be in the hangover of his own Kaitheri Sahadevan from Left Right Left. Supporting actors like Sudhi Koppa, Jaffer Idukki and Kalabhavan Shajon were decent in their performances.

Considering it as a debutant’s work, Tom Emmatty has delivered a clean entertainer. Prakash Velayudhan’s cinematography, Shameer Mohammed’s editing and Manikandan Ayyapan’s music were all exactly on the mark to what the movie demanded.

Oru Mexican Aparatha is an enjoyable watch if keep aside your high expectations. It could have easily been better had the director concentrated a bit more on the scripting.
