Dangal Review

Aamir Khan’s much expected sports drama Dangal has finally hit the screens worldwide. The movie is inspired from the real life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita, who are trained in wrestling by their father to bring glory to the country.

Mahavir Singh Phogat is a national wrestling champion who hails from Haryana. He wanted to represent the country and win the gold medal but could not as destiny had something else in store for him. He decides to make his son a champion but he is blessed with 4 girl children. He tries to break the taboo of women participating in Indian sports by training the girls in kusthi. How he is able to achieve his long cherished dream through his daughters forms the rest of the plot.

Dangal is not just another sports drama. It is more of a biopic inspired from the real characters. While doing a sports movie, stereotypes and cliché scenes are bound to be associated with it. Since the movie is inspired from real life achievements whose achievements are well-known to the country, the predictability factor will also be there. But this is where Dangal stands unique, only a very few clichéd scenes are there mostly due to the smart writing by Nitesh Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Merhotra. Tongue in cheek dialogues and the touching emotions between a father and his daughters are beautifully conveyed.

Coming to the performance side, Aamir Khan and the girls have put their whole life into the movie. The stunning body transformation undergone by the actor was already in the news but he does not stop there. His performance is top notch as the stubborn task master who strives for that extra yard to see his girls achieve the goal despite early protests by them and his wife. The girls Fatima Sana Sheikh, Zaira Wasim, Sanya Malhotra and Suhani Bhatnagar have given terrific performances. Especially Fathima Sana Sheikh who fits the bill perfectly as Geeta Kumari. The wrestling training underwent by the girls prior to the shoot helped in making the scenes look authentic and real. Sakshi Tanwar as Aamir’s better half gave a restrained performance.

Technically also Dangal stands tall with excellent cinematography and editing during the wrestling matches. Pritam’s goosebumps inducing music is another major asset in making the movie a sure shot winner.

In a nutshell, Dangal is a near perfect movie that should be experienced by everyone from theatres. More than just a movie it sends out a strong feminist message that girls are no lesser than boys.

So people, grab your tickets for the next possible show. It is worth every single penny.
