It’s a wrap for the first schedule of Suriya 42

We had earlier reported about Suriya and Siva teaming up for a big-budget film. Tentatively titled ‘Suriya 42’, it is jointly produced by Studio Green and UV Creations. The makers have successfully wrapped up the first schedule shoot in Goa. The team shot some important portions involving Suriya and female lead Disha Patani in this leg of shoot.

‘Suriya 42’ is said to be a massive period actioner. The film, which reportedly tells the story of a fictional warrior, will be made entirely in 3D format and released in 10 languages. Adi Narayana has scripted the film and it has dialogues penned by Madhan Karky.

Vetri, who cranked the camera in Siva’s films, has been retained as the cinematographer. Devi Sri Prasad has been signed as the music director. Art direction is by Milan and action choreography is being handled by Supreme Sundar.

Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan blessed with twin boys, controversy erupts

Celebrity couple Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan have been blessed with twin baby boys. Though the couple has not confirmed yet, it is reported that they became parents through surrogacy. Breaking the big news, Vignesh Shivan tweeted,

Nayan & me have become Amma & Appa. We are blessed with
twin baby boys. All our prayers, our ancestors’ blessings combined wit all the good manifestations made, have come together in the form of two blessed babies for us. Need all ur blessings for our Uyir and Ulagam

Meanwhile, a controversy has erupted regarding how the celebrity couple opted for surrogacy and whether they followed all the legal procedures. Tamil Nadu state has said that they would examine the matter and seek explanation from the two.

Surrogacy laws in India were amended in January this year. According to the new regulations, commercial surrogacy is completely prohibited, and only altruistic surrogacy is legal, which means the surrogate mother should be genetically related to the newborns.

All eyes are now on official statement from Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara regarding how they went about with the process.

Goodbye Review: Poignant and heartwarming in equal measures

Goodbye Review: Poignant and heartwarming in equal measures

Vikas Bahl’s latest film ‘Goodbye’ tries to explore how different people of the same family deal with the passing away of a dear one. Exploration of grief is a theme that has been dealt several times before, but put in the right moments and apt actors to pull off, it’s always a potential one.

‘Goodbye’ begins with Tara Bhalla (Rashmika Mandanna), an advocate partying and getting sloshed after winning her first case. Her mother Gayatri (Neena Gupta) tries calling her to know about the case’s verdict, but is unreachable. Later, her father Harish keeps trying to get to Tara, but isn’t able to. In the morning, Tara wakes up to the worst news possible — her mother has passed away. That’s the thing with death. It comes without any invite, snatches someone and leaves their dear ones shattered.

Harish has three more songs, one of whom is adopted. Except for the youngest of them, Nakul, who is on a trecking tour, all others get to the funeral. Karan (Pavail Gulati) is the eldest. He comes home with his foreigner wife to attend the funeral. But his mind is still caught up with his busy American worklife. On the night of the funeral, his dad gets angry on him for having an intimate moment with his wife. Similarly Angad, the adopted son, gets a mouthful from his dad for having butter chicken. Harish feels left alone and thinks that only he is grieving, while the reality is everyone in the family is. It’s just that each person has their own way of dealing with it.

‘Goodbye’ is extremely emotional but also has a lot of fun moments. It’s basically a funeral comedy, where the family members don’t have any idea of the rituals and traditions. It is their family friend PP (Ashish Vidyarthi), who takes care of it. While most of the fun moments land, some don’t. Like the stretched sequence involving a few neighbour women.

‘Goodbye’ boasts of some excellent performances. As always, it’s the two veterans — Neena Gupta and Amitabh Bachchan who stand out. Though Neena’s character dies in the beginning itself, she keeps coming back as memories and her graceful presence adds so much ‘life’ to the film. Amitabh Bachchan has done similar roles before, but you never get tired of him. The monologue by the banks of Ganga is sure to tug anyone’s heartstrings. One cannot help but wish if there were more portions involving Neena and Bachchan together. Rashmika Mandanna, in her Bollywood debut, is also impressive as the feisty, rational young woman.

In short, ‘Goodbye’ is a wholesome experience that will make you reach out to your family immediately after the show.

Eesho Review: Bland and predictable from the word go

After the blockbuster success of ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, Jayasurya and Nadirshah team up for ‘Eesho’. Unlike their maiden collaboration, which was a comedy entertainer, ‘Eesho’ is intended as a thriller. The problem with the film is, only the intentions are right. The execution falters big time.

‘Eesho’ revolves around Ramachandran Pillai, an ATM security and his chance encounter with a shady guy on a rainy night. Pillai is the target of a high profile businessman because he has witnessed a sexual assault and is about to testify it in the court. On the night before, a contract killer is hired to murder Pillai and make it look like an accident. With two primary characters and an impeding danger, all set over the course of a misty night, ‘Eesho’ could have been a gripping thriller. But it’s anything but that.

Jayasurya and Jaffer Idukki try their best to salvage the film despite poor writing. Both the actors come up with realistic performances and engage the viewer whenever they both appear together on screen. Supporting actors like Suresh Krishna, Namitha Pramod and Johnny Antony have nothing much to do in the film.

Jayasurya’s character is supposed to bring in a lot of mystery, but the opening track involving a tragic mother-daughter story gives away his role in the film. If only the makers had kept the cards closer and not expose anything so early, there would have been some suspense element in the film. One of the very few good things about the film is the runtime.

In a nutshell, ‘Eesho’ is another revenge-seeking thriller pulled down by mediocre writing and inefficient craft. For the talent that he is, Jayasurya should definitely revamp his script selection process.

Extraordinary response for Rorschach

Mammootty’s ‘Rorschach’ has opened to terrific response across all centres. The film, which is the maiden venture of the star’s new production banner Mammootty Kampany, is running with packed houses in most centres in Kerala. Several theatres have added extra shows, including late night shows, to accommodate the crowd. On the first day, alone the film had midnight shows at 30 odd centres. As per trade experts, the count has only increased over the weekend.

Directed by Nisam Basheer, ‘Rorschach’ is a psychological thriller with supernatural elements in it. The film has its script by Sameer Abdul, who has previously written the Asif Ali films ‘Adventures of Omanakuttan’ and ‘Ibilis’. Critics and commoners have lauded the film’s screenplay and treatment. Though it’s a revenge thriller, the way this tried-and-tested theme had been explored is unique and original.

Along with Mammootty’s brillaint performance, the film also has strong supporting acts from Bindu Panicker, Jagadish, Kottayam Nazeer, Grace Antony and Sharafudheen.

With positive response pouring in, ‘Rorschach’ is most likely to continue its good run in the following week as well.

Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey release postponed

Basil Joseph-Darshana Rajendran starrer ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’ was originally set for an October 21 release, but the makers have now pushed it by a week to October 28. The decision was most likely to avoid a direct clash with biggies like Mohanlal’s ‘Monster’ and Nivin Pauly’s ‘Padavettu’.

‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’ is written and directed by Vipin Das of ‘Mudhugauv’ and ‘Antakshari’ fame. The film has Darshana and Basil as newlyweds, and the story revolves around them. Basil plays a character named Rajesh and Darshana essays the titular role of Jaya.

From its teaser and promos, ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’ promises to be a fun entertainer, which will address a relevant issue through a middle-class woman’s struggles. Lakshmi Warrier and Ganesh Menon, who last produced the sleeper hit ‘Jaan-e-Man’, are backing this film under the banner of Cheers Entertainments.
