Rajeev Ravi promises a lot with back to back releases

Six years after the release of ‘Kammattipaadam’, director Rajeev Ravi is set to have two releases in the space of a week. While ‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’, an investigative thriller is set to hit screens on May 27, the long-delayed multi-starrer ‘Thuramukham’ will release on June 3. Incidentally, both the films are based on real-life incidents and have high expectations among cinephiles.

‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ stars Asif Ali, Sunny Wayne, Sharafudheen, Alencier Ley Lopez and Senthil Krishna as the leads. The film is inspired from the true incident of a jewellery robbery that occured in Kasargod in 2015. The case took a 5-member team from the Kerala police force to a dreaded village in Uttar Pradesh where they risked their lives to arrest the culprits. Sibi Thomas, the policeman who headed the real investigation, has scripted the film along with journalist Sreejith Divakaran. Asif Ali, Sunny Wayne, Sharafudheen, Alencier Ley Lopez and Senthil Krishna play cops in the film.

‘Thuramukham’ starring Nivin Pauly in the lead is set in the Mattanchery of the 40s and 50s. It is based on the historic protests against the inhuman ‘chappa’ system, wherein copper coins were thrown at waiting workers in a primitive work guarantee scheme. Gopan Chidambaran has scripted the film based on his father KM Chidambaran’s play of the same name.

‘Thuramukham’ has a big star cast comprising of actors like Indrajith Sukumaran, Arjun Ashokan, Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan, Poornima Indrajith, Sudev Nair, and Darshana Rajendran in important roles.

Kamal Haasan’s highly anticipated film ‘Vikram’ is set to hit screens on June 3. The film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj has massive hype. Along with Kamal, it has Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi in prominent roles. Suriya is also there in a cameo role. Cinephiles as well as the actors’ fans are equally excited about the film.

Recently, it got revealed that ‘Vikram’ has a runtime of 173 minutes. It was revealed by Prime Media, the banner that acquired the film’s US distribution rights. Touted to be an action-packed entertainer, ‘Vikram’ cast also includes Narain, Kalidas Jayaram, Chemban Vinod Jose, Shivani Narayanan and many others.

The film has cinematography by Girish Gangadharan, music by Anirudh, edits by Philomin Raj and stunts handled by AnbAriv duo. Kamal Haasan’s own banner Raaj Kamal Film International (RKFI) is producing it.

Karthi is teaming up with ‘Irumbuthirai’ director PS Mithran for a new film titled ‘Sardar’. The film, which has the actor in a dual role, has been confirmed as a Deepavali release. The makers announced it with a special poster featuring Karthi in a cop look. While one of his characters is a police officer, he sports old man’s look for the other character. This is the second time after ‘Siruthai’ that Karthi is playing a dual role.

‘Sardar’ has Rajisha Vijayan and Raashi Khanna as the female leads. Bollywood actor Chunky Pandey will be seen as the antagonist in the film. Simran, Murali Sharma, Ilavarasu, Munishkanth and many others are part of the cast.

On the technical front, GV Prakash is the music composer and cinematography is by George C Williams. Editor Ruben, stunt choreographer Dilip Subbarayan and art director Kadhir are also part of the team.

‘Sardar’ is being produced by Lakshman Kumar under the banner of Prince Pictures.

Jana Gana Mana enters the 50 crore club

The makers of Jana Gana Mana have announced that the film has grossed Rs 50 crores from its worldwide theatrical run. The film had breached the Rs 20 crore mark from its first 5 days itself. Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu as the leads, the film is a socio-political thriller that raises many important questions. It is scripted by Sharis Mohammed and directed by Dijo Jose Antony of ‘Queen’ fame.

Hitting screens on April 28, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ opened to largely positive response. Both critics and the commoners lapped up the film, with particular praise for the performances of the two leads. Others in the cast include Mamta Mohandas, veteran actor Shari, Dhruvan, Vincy Aloshious and ‘June’ fame Vaishnavi Venugopal.

As confirmed by the makers, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ will have a second part, some portions of which have already been shot. It is expected to give closure to a lot of unanswered questions in the first part.

Supriya Menon and Listin Stephen are jointly producing the film under the banners of Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames.

Release date of Nivin Pauly’s Padavettu announced

After almost two years of production, the Nivin Pauly-starrer ‘Padavettu’ is finally gearing up for release. It has been announced that the film will hit screens on September 2. ‘Padavettu’ marks actor Sunny Wayne’s debut as a producer. The film is a joint production venture with Saregama, a leading music label. Their film division Yoodlee Films is foraying into Malayalam industry with this project.

Apart from the long delay, ‘Padavettu’ was in the news when its director Liju Krishna was recently arrested for sexually assaulting a woman. It is learnt that the makers completed the remaining portions with the film’s assistant director.

‘Padavettu’ is said to be a rustic entertainer set in Kannur. Nivin Pauly is said to be playing a challenging character in the film. He will be appearing in two different looks. Aditi Balan and Shine Tom Chacko will be seen in supporting roles while Manju Warrier essays a cameo role.

It is already known that Tamil actor Dhanush is starring in the upcoming Netflix original, ‘The Gray Man’. The film directed by ‘Avengers’ fame Russo Brothers has Hollywood stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as the leads. Dhanush is playing an important role in it.

Last day, the streamer released its trailer online. ‘The Gray Man’ is an action thriller where the story revolves around two killers – a freelance assassin Gentry (Ryan Gosling) and Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former associate of Gentry at the CIA and now on a worldwide hunt for him, and their duel. Dhanush is said to be playing an Indian native’s role in it.

Ana de Armas, Wagner Moura and Jessica Henwick are also playing prominent roles in the film. ‘Avengers’ scenarists Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are also involved in this project, which is said to be Netflix’s biggest ever till date. It is scheduled to have its premiere on July 22.

Sunny Wayne set for a strong comeback with back-to-back promising films

Sunny Wayne had a decent 2021 with his films like ‘Anugraheethan Antony’, ‘Chathur Mukham’, ‘Saras’ and ‘Kurup’ getting good response from the audience. The actor is now set for a stronger comeback. He has promising films like ‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’, ‘Appan’, ‘Adithattu’, ‘Varal’ and ‘Thrayam’ coming up.

‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’, which has him reuniting with director Rajeev Ravi after ‘Annayum Rasoolum’, marks his first cop role. Asif Ali and Sharafudheen will also be seen in major roles in it.

‘Appan’ is directed by Maju, with whom Sunny had worked together in ‘French Viplavam’. The film which also stars Grace Antony, Ananya, Alencier Ley and Pauly Valsan is a dysfunctional family drama. Its promos have all been highly promising. Sunny is producing the film along with Josekutty Madathil and Ranjith Manambarakkat’s banner Tiny Hands Productions. Sunny also has under production venture coming up. He is backing the Nivin Pauly starrer ‘Padavettu’.

‘Adithattu’ has Sunny playing the lead role along with Shine Tom Chacko. Jijo Anthony is directing the film and it is produced by Mini March Studios in association with Kanayil Films. It is Jijo Anthony’s second film with Sunny Wayne after ‘Pokkiri Simon’. From the promos released so far, ‘Adithattu’ looks like a film shot majorly in the sea.

‘Thrayam’ has Sunny playing the lead along with Dhyan Sreenivasan and Anu Mohan. It is scripted by Arun K Gopinaath and directed by Sanjth Chandrasenan.

‘Varal’ is also a multi-starrer. Kannan Thamarakulam is directing the film, which is scripted by Anoop Menon. Apart from Sunny, the film also stars Anoop Menon, Prakash Raj, Sunny Wayne, Suresh Krishna, Shankar Ramakrishnan and Renji Panicker.

Shoot for Vijay’s next with Vamshi Paidipally is progressing at a brisk pace. The film has a solid star cast, which includes a mix of young actors and veterans. While Rashmika Mandanna is paired with Vijay, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Sangeetha, Shaam and Jayasudha will be seen in other prominent roles.

Last day, Prakash Raj shared a photo taken with Vijay on the sets of ‘Thalapathy 66’. The two, best known for their combination in ‘Ghilli’, last acted together in ‘Villu’. It will be interesting to see the duo share screen after 13 long years.

Fahadh Faasil joins the sets of Mari Selvaraj’s Maamannan

As reported earlier, Fahadh Faasil is starring in ‘Karnan’ director Mari Selvaraj’s new film ‘Maamannan’. The film, which stars Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead role, went on floors in March. Fahadh has now joined the sets. In the photos shared on social media, the actor is seen sporting a big twirled moustache.

‘Maamannan’ has high expectations among Tamil cinema lovers. It is said to be Udhayanidhi Stalin’s last film before entering full time into politics. His own banner Red Giant Movies is producing the film.

‘Maamanithan’ is reportedly a rural-based mass entertainer. It is expected to be a strong content-oriented film like Mari Selvaraj’s previous works, ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ and ‘Karnan’. The makers however have so far been tight-lipped about the film’s genre or its storyline. The cast also includes Vadivelu and Keerthy Suresh in prominent roles.
