Gold is my third film without anything innovative and fresh: Alphonse Puthren

Alphonse Puthren is making his much-awaited comeback with ‘Gold’ starring Prithviraj Sukumaran. The former is donning the director’s hat six years after he made the sensational hit, ‘Premam’. Expectations are naturally high on his upcoming project.

Alphonse, however, has warned his fans that they shouldn’t be expecting another ‘Premam’ or ‘Neram’ from him. In a Facebook post, he has mentioned that ‘Gold’ is a different film with a bunch of good characters, couple of songs, and a few jokes. Like how he warned before his previous films, the director has also stated that ‘Gold’ won’t be having innovative and fresh.

Though Alphonse’s films usually don’t boast of out-of-the box storylines, it is with his craft and finesse that he makes them stand out. It is still not known what genre ‘Gold’ belongs to. The film has Nayanthara as the female lead. Ajmal Ameer, Vinay Forrt, Thensi Khan, Baburaj and many others are part of the cast. The film is jointly produced by Supriya Menon under the banner of Prithviraj Productions and Listin Stephen of Magic Frames.

Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham Review: A technically superior period film!

Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham Review: A technically superior period film!

‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ is based on the life of Marakkar IV. Marakkars were the Naval commander of the Zamorin of Kozhikode. Kunjali Marakkar IV, on whose life the film is based on, fought and defeated Portuguese imperialists, but was betrayed by forces in the kingdom who allied with the Europeans.

Priyadarshan’s version of Marakkar is a mix of facts and fiction. The director along with Ani IV Sasi have penned the script, which follows Kunjali’s life from childhood. While Mohanlal plays the historic figure, his son Pranav essays the character’s younger portions. Pranav’s agility in stunts makes the initial portions interesting. Then comes Mohanlal introduction and the film moves at a steady pace till a stunningly shot battle between the Kunjali Marakkar-lead forces and the Portuguese army. The VFX works in this sequence are extraordinary, probably the best one can see in Indian film. However, the film fails to maintain the same momentum in the latter half as it gets into the drama zone. The fact that there isn’t enough scenes to celebrate or elevate the titular character backfires. But it is kind of made up with another battle stretch towards the end, this time in the shore.

The film has a star-studded, which features actors from various language and also Priyadarshan’s regulars like Mukesh, Innocent, Mammukoya etc. Mohanlal as Kunjali Marakkar fits in the role neatly but one can’t help but wish that the script offered him a bit more space to perform. Along with him, actors Arjun, Keerthy Suresh, Jay J Jakritt, Harish Peradi and Prabhu make a mark.

Priyadarshan had promised that ‘Marakkar’ will be the most technically brilliant film in Indian cinema. In that sense, the director has delivered what he promised. It is a technically superior film which could’ve worked tremendously if it had a better script. It is still a film that should be experienced from theatres. As a Malayalam cinema fan, it is not always that we see a film of such scale and technical quality.

Maanaadu 2 is on cards, hints Venkat Prabhu.

As ‘Maanaadu’ crossed the break-even mark within a week of its release, the makers organized a thanksgiving session in Twitter Spaces last day. It was attended by the main cast and crew members including Simbu, director Venkat Prabhu, SJ Suryah, Kalyani Priyadarshan, composer Yuvan Shankar Raja and Premgi Amaren.

During the session, when asked about the possibility of a sequel, director Venkat Prabhu revealed that it is definitely on cards and that the film’s antagonist, Dhanushkodi, played by SJ Suryah, is still alive and will return in the sequel.

‘Maanaadu’ ends with SJ Suryah’s character getting shot and killed by security forces. But the film’s time-loop concept ensures that if the protagonist Abdul Khaliq, played by Simbu, is alive then the villain, Dhanushkodi will also be alive.

‘Maanaadu’ is a political thriller with a fascinating time loop concept. It is a first such attempt in Tamil cinema and the film has been getting overwhelming response from both critics and the common audience.

Prithviraj to direct and act in Hindi web series on ‘Biscuit King’ Rajan Pillai

Prithviraj is set to wear the director’s hat, this time for a web series. He will be directing and acting in a new Hindi web series based on ‘Biscuit King’ Rajan Pillai. Saregama’s Yoodlee Films is backing this project, which also marks Prithviraj’s digital debut.

Announcing the project, Yoodlee Films tweeted,

We believe in fearless stories that can inspire. Presenting our latest project in the making :

A Hindi web series inspired by the life story of India’s ‘Biscuit King’ – Rajan Pillai with National Award winner @PrithviOfficial playing the lead role and also directing the series.

Rajan Pillai was an influential Malayali businessman who was convicted by Singapore’s Commercial Affairs Department for 22 counts of fraud and breach of trust. He died in 1995 while in custody in Tihar Jail.

About helming a web series based on Rajan Pillai’s life, Prithviraj said that the existence of light and darkness in human lives has always engaged him as an actor and director and this story has it all: ambition, success, a luxurious lifestyle and then an excessive-pride triggered fall that took a man from the top of corporate power to the darkness of a prison cell.

Prithviraj also believes that Rajan Pillai’s story serves as an example of how the effects of success and power blur the line of morality, to this generation. He added that it will be interesting to discover what made this charismatic personality tick and to relive his intriguing, complex life.
