Karthika Muralidharan shares about her weight loss journey

Karthika Muralidharan shares about her weight loss journey

Actress Karthika Muraleedharan, who did notable roles with Dulquer Salmaan in Comrade In America and Mammootty in ‘Uncle’, has shared about her weight loss journey. She took to her Instagram handle to pen down a long note in which she opened up about being fat-shamed and how she overcame all that to live her body. Karthika also thanked her coach, who helped her in the body transformation journey.

Karthika has written,

I have been chubby since I was a little girl, it was brought to my notice in 2nd STD . Fat-shaming was persistent since then till my adulthood. The thing is it’s not just an appearance issue , as a child I had to develop weird defense mechanisms to keep me going because it’s not just school but your friends outside of school AND family . I would shame myself, hate myself, then started gaining more weight to rebel which in-turn worked against me .

Then I joined an industry known for unhealthy beauty standards! The FAT SHAMING AND SEXUALISATION started on a much much MUCH larger level than I could handle .

My body and I have been in a constant state of war with each other for a very very long time and I was getting tired , I couldn’t convince the world to accept me as I am , I couldn’t accept myself either so I started out with fad diets – Low Carb, exessive excercising , Keto , Juice-ing – you name it .

NOTHING WOULD STICK. Why? Because I hated my body and I was doing all of these things because I hated it soo much , I wanted it to stop existing & become something else , something against my adult understanding of what is healthy, beautiful and fit .

I had to fix my relationship with food, with my body, my mind and my belief systems . I needed something sustainable , something to replace all this unnecessary bullshit standards and dialogues around me . I wanted to be an authentic version of me that I would love.

Serendipity struck and I came across @adika.yoga
I joined Neelam with the intention of weight loss only but in-turn it changed the way I consumed food, my respect for myself, my body and instilled a sense of fearlessness and power ,which wasn’t in the nutrition course but when your body and mind are fed well the energy it produces is unstoppable. I started seeing my body less as a machine and more as an amazing being which absorbs all that you give it and returns the favour 10 folds!
This is not a paid promotional post. I recognise the change I am going through and I have been getting DM’s saying I have been doing XYZ still not losing weight and how to lose weight . These are the answers I came across and I am sharing them with you.

Lal explains why he did not dub for his character in Karnan

Lal explains why he did not dub for his character in Karnan

Dhanush’s ‘Karnan’, after its blockbuster theatrical run, is now streaming in Amazon Prime. The film is getting rave reviews from people who missed the film from the big screen. Directed by Mari Selvaraj, it is a hard-hitting film about the oppression faced by a particular community in a rural village in Tamil Nadu. While Dhanush plays the titular character of a fierce righteous youngster, he is throughout supported by Malayalam actor Lal. It is the veteran’s best role in Tamil cinema till date and his performance is getting widely talked about.

After the OTT release of ‘Karnan’, many social media users have been asking Lal why he did not dub for his character despite being fluent in Tamil. Last day, he took to his social media handle to explain that the Tamil in the film, which is of Tirunelveli dialect, is very different from the normal Tamil. Though the makers, including director Mari Selvaraj and producer Kalaipuli S Thanu, insisted Lal to dub for the character, he thought it would not be ideal for the film. It was at his request that the voice of a Tirunelveli native was used.

Lal’s Facebook post reads,

Dear All,
Many of you have been asking me as to why I have not lent my own voice for Yema Raja in Karnan. As you all know Karnan is set in the backdrop of Tirunelveli; the dialect of Tamil spoken in Tirunelveli is very different from the Tamil spoken in Chennai. Even in Malayalam, if one is asked to speak in Thrissur dialect, it often ends up being a mere imitation, and nothing close to how a native of Thrissur would speak.
Moreover Karnan is a movie in which the language and culture is of great importance and hence a unique dialect of the Tamil language has to be spoken to bring the character to a whole. Majority of the cast were locals themselves; there was a good chance that my dubbing would have stood out from the rest of them. As I did not want to give anything less than my 100% for this movie, I was skeptical.
Due to persistence of the crew including the director Mari Selvaraj Sir and Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu Sir, I did go to Chennai for the dubbing sessions. However, it was for the good of the film, and also at my request, that the voice of a Tirunelveli native was used.
Thank you for all your support and good words.
With love,
Lal.

Over the last few years, Malayalam films have been getting a lot of appreciation from other-language audience. More recently, films like ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’, ‘Joji’ and ‘Nayattu’ are being spoken about a lot in social medias.

Bollywood-based filmmaker Hansal Mehta seems to have been highly impressed with ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ and ‘Nayattu’. He has tweeted about both the films, which reads,

Watched The Great Indian Kitchen. Am just taken in by this new Malayalam cinema. Such maturity, economy and elegance while dealing with pertinent themes. No rabble rousing, no pompous dialogue, no preaching. Yet so much power in the story telling. Such honesty in the craft.

Nayattu on @NetflixIndia is a very strong film. Engrossing, tense, real and nuanced with terrific characters. So well directed and acted. Try it.

Sasikumar, Vijay Sethupathi and Madhavan were the first choices for Joseph Tamil remake

As reported by us earlier, hit Malayalam ‘Joseph’ is getting remade in Tamil. M Padmakumar, who directed the original film in Malayalam, is helming the Tamil version as well. Producer-turned-actor RK Suresh is reprising the lead role played by Joju. Multiple national-award winning filmmaker Bala is producing the film, which has been titled as ‘Visithran’.

In a recent interview, RK Suresh revealed that initially actors like Sasikumar, Vijay Sethupathi, and Madhavan were the first choices to play the lead role. It was Bala who insisted Suresh to take up the role. The latter had put extra efforts to play the character, which included putting on over 20 kilos. Joju’s performance in the original was widely praised and won him numerous accolades including the Kerala State award for Best Character Actor and a Special Jury Mention at the National level. So RK Suresh has a big task ahead of them to match up to that.

‘Visithran’ has its screenplay adapted by John Mahendran, the director of Vijay’s ‘Sachien’. Poorna, Madhu Shalini, Ilavarasu, Marimuthu, Bagavathi Perumal and late Malayalam actor Anil Murali are part of the supporting cast. GV Prakash is handling the music department. Vetrivel Mahendran is the cinematographer.

Nayattu and Karnan are examples of sincere filmmaking: Alphonse Puthren

Nayattu and Karnan are examples of sincere filmmaking: Alphonse Puthren

Due to the extension of lockdown in Kerala, most people are confined to their homes. For people seeking entertainment, OTT platforms have been a great blessing. The Tamil film ‘Karnan’ (Amazon Prime) and Malayalam film ‘Nayattu’ (Netflix) are two of the best ones that are currently streaming online.

Malayalam filmmaker Alphonse Puthren rated both these films as examples of sincere filmmaking. In his Facebook page, he has written,

Martin Prakkat’s Nayattu & Mari Selvaraj’s Karnan = sincere filmmaking. Respect and Love for the team and all the cast and crew.

Though ‘Karnan’ and ‘Nayattu’ belong to two different genres, one thing that is common between both the films is that they both speak about Dalit oppression. In ‘Karnan’, a group of lower-caste villagers are denied access to public transport and are subject to institutional discrimination and custody violence. ‘Nayattu’, on the other hand, is a hard-hitting social drama. The film presents a disturbing picture of how Dalits are exploited and cops get victimized in a corrupt system. Despite the rave reviews, a section have criticized the film as being anti-Dalit and pro-police.

When one of his followers pointed out that ‘Karnan’ speaks for the Dalits and ‘Nayattu’ is with the cops, Alphonse Puthren replied that he was just talking about the making quality of these films and not their politics.
