Soorarai Pottru selected for Shanghai International Film Festival

Suriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ has entered the Panorama Section of Shanghai International Film Festival 2021. Rajasekar Pandian, who heads 2D Entertainment, the banner that produced the film, informed the big news by tweeting,

Happy that #SooraraiPottru #PraiseTheBrave enters Panorama Section of Shanghai International Film Festival 2021.

The 24th Shanghai International Film Festival is scheduled to be held from June 12 to 15 this year in Shanghai.

Earlier, ‘Soorarai Pottru’ had made it to the list of 366 films eligible for Best Picture in the Academy Awards. The film joined the Oscar race under the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and a few other categories. It was the only Indian film amongst the films eligible for nomination at this year’s Oscars.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ directed by Sudha Kongara is about the story of a common man’s journey from humble backgrounds to accomplish his dream of launching an airlines service with the aim of serving the underprivileged. The film is inspired from the real life of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan. Aparna Balamurali and veteran Urvashi also played key roles in it.

Dhanush’s 2019-released ‘Asuran’ was a hugely successful film, both critically and commercially. It is still talked about by many, including non-Tamilians. Recently, Bollywood star Vicky Kaushal was seen talking in awe of the film. He was speaking about the quality of films in region cinema when he mentioned about Asuran. He said that the film really jolted him and got him numbed. He also added that he is dying to work with its director Vetrimaaran.

‘Asuran’ is a period action film based on Poomani’s novel Vekkai. Dhanush and Manju Warrier played the lead roles. Upon release, the film met with widespread critical appreciation. Commercially also, it emerged as one of the highest grossers in Dhanush’s career.

‘Asuran’ was screened at 51st International Film Festival of India at Goa as part of the Indian Panorama section. It was also selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened at the 78th Golden Globe Awards (2021) under the Best Foreign Film category. Earlier this year, the film bagged two National Film Awards — Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Actor for Dhanush.

Rajinikanth’s daughter Soundarya and family donate Rs 1 crore to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund

After Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mk Stalin requested public and private organisations to donate towards the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF), people from all walks of the society have been coning forward to do their bit. Superstar Rajinikanth’s daughter Soundarya and her family have donated Rs 1 crore to the CMPRF. Soundarya, her husband Vishagan, his sister and their father SS Vanangamudi personally met the Chief Minister and handed over their generous donations. The contribution was made on behalf of their pharmaceutical company Apex Laboratory.

Along with sharing photos of their meet with MK Stalin, Soundarya has tweeted,

My father-in-law Mr. S.S.Vanangamudi, husband Vishagan, his sister and I visited the honorable Chief minister @mkstalin sir this morning to hand over our contribution of 1cr for the chief ministers #CoronaReliefFund from our pharma company Apex laboratories, Makers of #Zincovit

Earlier, actors Suriya, Karthi and their father Sivakumar met MK Stalin and handed over Rs 1 crore towards CMPRF for the fight against COVID-19. Ajith has also donated Rs 25 lakhs.

Actor Antony Varghese’s Himalayan expedition along with a group of friends have been documented as a travel video. Titled as Wabi-Sabi, it is written and directed by Sani Yas. The first of the two episodes got released last day on the occasion of Eid.

Wabi-Sabi is an ancient Japanese concept which is about finding beauty in imperfections. Through this travel video, the makers are attempting to takes us on a raw, realistic and true perspective of a journey seeking happiness. Wabi-Sabi forays into the evolution, history, culture and cuisine of the Himalayas and its people. The episodes unfold through Antony Varghese, who details about the travel experience.

Wabi-Sabi is produced by Vaisakh C Vadakkeveedu and Safa Sani. Camera is handled by Rahul OZ while Edits and DI are by Riyaz Mohammed. Sumesh Somasundar has composed the music. Shahaneer Babu has beautifully narrated the episodes.

Karnan starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video; Rave reviews pour in for the Dhanush starrer

Dhanush starrer ‘Karnan’ has started streaming on Amazon Prime Video. As expected, the initial response from all those who missed the film from theatres have been highly positive. Netizens, particularly non-Tamilians, are raving about the film. It is already rated by many as one of the best Indian films of the year.

‘Karnan’ directed by Mari Selvaraj is a rural-based drama that is partly inspired by real life incidents. The film is hard-hitting as it speaks about oppression, custody violence and institutional discrimination. While Dhanush played the titular role, the film also stars Rajisha Vijayan, Lal, Lakshmipriya Chandramouli, Azhagar Perumal, Natarajan Subramanian, Gouri Kishan and Yogi Babu in important roles.

Upon its theatrical release in April, the film received widespread critical acclaim. It also emerged as a huge commercial success. Despite the pandemic and audience restriction, the film managed to end up as the biggest blockbuster in Dhanush’s career till date.

Ajith donates Rs 25 lakhs to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund

India is facing unprecedented tough times due to the pandemic second wave, which has already claimed thousands of lives. Tamil Nadu is one among the worst affected states in the country. People from all walks of the society are doing their bit by donating towards the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF). Many from within the film industry have already donated generously towards the cause. Actor Ajith is the latest to contribute towards the relief fund as he donated Rs 25 lakhs.

Ajith’s manager Suresh Chandra informed the same by tweeting,

Shri Ajith kumar had donated twenty five lakhs to the Chief minister relief fund today via bank transfer.

Last day, actors Suriya, Karthi and their father Sivakumar met and greeted the newly-elected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. They also donated Rs 1 crore towards CMPRF for the fight against COVID-19.

The authorities have assured that the money donated will be spent for increasing oxygen beds, procuring medicines and ventilators, production of oxygen, infrastructure development of hospitals, purchasing vaccines, and for other medical expenses.

The teaser of Rajeev Ravi’s much-anticipated film ‘Thuramukham’ got released online last day. It is a period film based on the historic protests against the inhuman ‘chappa’ system that existed during the 1940s wherein copper coins were thrown at waiting workers in a primitive work guarantee scheme.

From the teaser, it is presumed that Nivin Pauly plays a rebel who stands up against the inhuman practice. Sudev Nair essays the antagonist’s role. The actor had put on 11 kilos for playing the character in ‘Thuramukham’. He has shared photos of his transformation in his Instagram handle. Along with the photos, he has written,

Here’s the trailer of award-winning short film Midnight Run

‘Midnight Run’ is a 14-minute short film directed by Remya Raj. It stars features Dileesh Pothan and ‘Guppy’ fame Chethan Jayalal. The short is set for release tomorrow (May 14) on Saina Play. Meanwhile, its trailer has been shared online.

‘Midnight Run’ is a realistic thriller that takes place over the span of one single night. It revolves around a young boy who escapes from a scrap yard on a festive night and reaches a road. Circumstances force him to hitch a ride with a truck driver. The two do not get along well and the film tries to portray fear’s ability to trigger a complete transformation in people.

‘Midgnight Run’ is based on a story by BT Anil Kumar. Remya Raj has written the screenplay. The film also has a strong technical team comprising of cinematographer Girish Gangadharan, editor Kiran Das, music director Sankar Sharma and sound designer Renganaath Ravee.

The film has already had a successful run in the festival circuit. It was screened at various international film festivals including the 2018 International Film Festival of India.

Budget revised for Allu Arjun-Fahadh Faasil starrer Pushpa

It is being widely reported that Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa’ will be releasing in two parts. Though the film was originally planned as a regular single-part film, the makers have now decided to extend it. Director Sukumar believes that the script has the potential for a second part and he has already conveyed the same to Allu and the makers. The film was originally planned to be made on a budget of Rs 160 crores including the remunerations.

With several new changes in the script, the estimated budget is now around Rs 250 crores for both the parts. Allu Arjun and the producers also seem to be convinced with it. The makers are expected to give an official confirmation soon.

‘Pushpa’ is a hugely hyped project. It is Allu Arjun’s first pan-Indian film that is planned to be released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam. The film’s shoot has currently been stopped due to the pandemic. It is learnt that about 45 days of work still remains for completion. If things go as per plans, ‘Pushpa: Part 1’ will be released either in October or mid-December. The second part might start rolling by next summer.

‘Pushpa’ stars Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil as the antagonist. It is likely that most of Fahadh’s portions will appear only in the second part. Rashmika Mandanna, Prakash Raj, Jagapati Babu, Harish Uthaman, Vennela Kishore, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Anish Kuruvilla and many others are part of the supporting cast.
