Tovino Thomas to star in Thira and Godha fame Rakesh Mantodi’s directorial debut Varavu

Rakesh Mantodi, the scenarist of ‘Thira’ and ‘Godha’, is turning a filmmaker. His directorial debut titled ‘Varavu’ has Tovino Thomas in the lead. Pradeep Kumar Pathiyara is producing the film under the banner of Pathiyara Entertainment Pvt Ltd. The production house last backed the superhit film ‘Aravindante Athidhikal’.

‘Varavu’ is scripted jointly by the film’s director Rakesh Mantodi, Saresh Malayankandi and popular lyricist Manu Manjith. Vishwajith, who is making his debut as a cinematographer with the Pranav Mohanlal starrer ‘Hridhayam’, will be cranking the camera for this film as well. Details regarding the genre, supporting cast and other crew members are expected to be formally announced before the film goes on floors. The makers are planning to shoot only next year.

Tovino Thomas meanwhile has few other projects lined up. After the Corona-crisis is over, he is expected to resume shooting for his multilingual superhero film ‘Minnal Murali’. ‘Ajayante Randaam Moshanam’ and ‘Kala’ are some of the star’s other announced projects.

Mohanlal’s much talked about film ‘Drishyam 2’ had gone on floors recently. It is the second part to the record-breaking blockbuster ‘Drishyam’ that was released in 2013. Jeethu Joseph, who helmed the first part, is directing the sequel as well. The new film will have Mohanlal, Meena, Siddique, Asha Sharath, Esther Anil and Anisba Haasan reprising their roles.

Last day, Asha Sharath took to her social media handle to share excitement in being back as IG Geetha Prabhakar. Her Facebook post reads,

Finally , here we are!!!! With the official Covid negative reports to start our most awaited journey in Drishyam 2…I am so happy and excited to be back as ‘IG Geetha Prabhakar’, one of the best characters in my career…We all need all your support and prayers.

Even though Asha Sharath was already popular through television serials, it was ‘Drishyam’ that gave her a big break in films. Her performance in it was widely appreciated and the actress will be hoping to continue the same with the second part. Murali Gopy, Ganesh Kumar, Sai Kumar, Adam Ayub and Anjali Nair are the some of the new additions to the cast.

Joju George starrer ‘Joseph’ is getting remade in Tamil. M Padmakumar, who directed the original film in Malayalam, is helming the Tamil version as well. RK Suresh is reprising the lead role played by Joju. The Tamil remake has been titled as ‘Vichithran’ and its first look poster has been released online. Multiple National-award winning filmmaker Bala is producing the film.

‘Joseph’ tells the story of a retired policeman who unravels the mystery behind his ex-wife’s death. Joju’s performance in the film was widely appreciated and won him numerous accolades including the Kerala State award for Best Character Actor ad Special Jury Mention at the National level.

The Tamil version ‘Vichithran’ has its screenplay adapted by John Mahendran, the director of Vijay’s much-loved film ‘Sachien’. GV Prakash is handling the music department. Shamna Kasim and Madhu Shalini will be seen as the female leads. The film is currently in the final stages of production.

Anaswara Rajan to star in the Tamil and Telugu versions of Thanneer Mathan Dinangal

As reported by us earlier, the blockbuster teenage rom-com ‘Thanneer Mathan Dinangal’ is getting remade in Tamil and Telugu languages. Debutant Hemanth will be directing the Tamil remake. Interestingly, Anaswara Rajan, who played the female lead in the original, will be reprising the same character in both the Tamil and Telugu versions. Other details regarding the projects are not yet known.

‘Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal’ directed by Girish AD has Vineeth Sreenivasan and a bunch of teenagers in the lead roles. The film was a sensational success at the box office raking up close to Rs 50 crores. Since the storyline is broadly appealing, it should interest a wide range of audience irrespective of the language barrierr. However, it all depends on how well the script is adapted to suit the sensibilities of the native audience.

Anaswara also has couple of other interesting projects coming up. She is making her Tamil debut with ‘Raangi’, a thriller film that has Trisha in the lead. ‘Engeyum Epodhum’ fame M Saravanan is directing the film. Anaswara will also be seen playing the titular role in ‘Super Saranya’, to be directed by ‘Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal’ director Girish AD.

Drishyam 2 cast and crew details out

The highly anticipated Mohanlal starrer ‘Drishyam 2’ went on floors recently. The film was launched in Kochi with a customary pooja ceremony, which was attended by few members from the cast and crew. Before the full-fledged shoot begins, the makers have shared the details of the team members.

Mohanlal, Meena, Siddique, Asha Sarath, Esther Anil and Anisba Haasan were reprising their roles from the first part. Murali Gopy, Ganesh Kumar, Sai Kumar, Adam Ayub and Anjali Nair are the some of the latest additions to the cast.

Satheesh Kurup will be cranking the camera and music department will be handled by Anil Johnson. Editor Vinayakan, art director Rajeev Kovilakam and costume designer Linda Jeethu are also part of the technical crew. Taking in consideration the Covid-19 situation, the film’s shoot will be conducted following all the safety protocols.

Kochi and Thodupuzha are the major locations. Mohanlal’s own production house Aashirvad Cinemas is producing the film.

The film also has veteran Manju Warrier in a major role.

Tamil filmmaker Atlee’s ambitious project with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan seems to be on the right track. The director is finalizing the script works with a team of writers. Reportedly, SRK will be seen in a dual role in the film. It must be noted that out of the four films that Atlee has directed so far, two of them, ‘Mersal’ and ‘Bigil’, had the lead actor Vijay in dual and triple roles. Even in ‘Theri’, Vijay played a character with two different shades.

Likewise, with his maiden Hindi film, Atlee is keen on continuing with his habit of exploring multiple shades of the lead actor. SRK will be seen essaying contrasting characters, both as the hero and as the villain. If reports are to be believed, the superstar will be playing the part of an investigating officer and a most-wanted criminal.

Deepika Padukone has been signed to play the female lead’s role. If it materializes, it will be her fourth outing with SRK after ‘Om Shanti Om’, ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘Happy New Year’.

Prithviraj to play a cop in an upcoming investigative thriller

We had recently reported about Plan J Studios, the banner that co-produced ‘Thanneer Mathan Dinangal’, producing a film with Prithviraj Sukumaran as the lead. Cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Tanu Balak will be making his directorial debut with the film, which is an investigative thriller.

Prithviraj will be playing a police officer’s role in the film. The actor has previously essayed cop roles in films like ‘Vargam’, ‘Masters’ ‘Mumbai Police’, ‘Memories’ etc. His new film with Tanu Balak is said to be a proper suspense thriller. The project is still in the early stages.

The makers had recently released a casting call on looking for girls between the age group of 6-8 and both male and female actors between 25-60. Since it is specially mentioned that artists from Kanyakumari-Trivandrum region are preferred, it looks like the film is set in that particular milieu. A formal announcement with complete details regarding the cast and crew is expected to be made soon.

Prithviraj has several other projects coming up, which includes both small scale films and highly ambitious ones like ‘Kaaliyan’, ‘Vaariyamkunnan’, ‘Karachi 81’ and a multilingual film that is planned to be shot completely in virtual production. ‘Kaduva’ with Shaji Kailas and ‘Ayalvaashi’ with Irshad Parari’ are the star’s other committed projects.

It is actor Unni Mukundan’s birthday today and on this special occasion, a big announcement regarding his new project has been made. The star is teaming up with hit maker Vysakh for a mass action film titled ‘Bruce Lee’. The film’s first look and motion poster has just been released online. Almost all the leading celebs from Malayalam film industry including Mohanlal and Mammootty have shared the poster in their respective social media handles.

‘Bruce Lee’ also marks the maiden production venture of Unni Mukundan. The film is planned to be made on a budget of around Rs 25 crores. From the first look poster which features Unni holding a gun and flaunting his ripped physique, it looks like the film will be a treat for action lovers.

Udhayakrisha is scripting the film and it has cinematography by Shaji Kumar. The trio of Vysakh, Udhayakrisha and Shaji Kumar had previously collaborated for ‘Pulimurugan’ and ‘Madhuraraja’. Since both the films were hugely successful at the box office, they will hoping to continue the same.

‘Bruce Lee’ will go on floors next year after the pandemic situation gets better.

Earlier this month on the 22nd anniversary of ‘Summer in Bethlahem’, veterans Sibi Malayil and Ranjith announced that they are reuniting after two decades. Sibi Malayil is directing the film that will have Asif Ali in the lead. Ranjith is producing the film, which is yet to be titled.

Sibi Malayil and Asif Ali have earlier worked together in ‘Apoorvaragam’, ‘Violin’ and ‘Unnam’. Latest reports suggest their new film’s shoot will begin in October. Kozhikode will be the major location. Shoot will be conducted following all the Covid-19 safety protocols.

Asif Ali has several other promising projects lined up. He was shooting for Rajeev Ravi’s cop-thriller ‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ when the lockdown was announced. He also has ‘Ellam Sheriyaakum’ with Jibu Jacob, ‘Thattum Vellattam’ with Mridul Nair, ‘Maheshum Maruthiyum’ with Sethu, ‘A Ranjith Cinema’ with Nishanth Sattu and an untitled film with M Padmakumar coming up.

RJ Mathukutty directorial ‘Kunjeldho’ is most likely to be Asif Ali’s next release.
