‘Marakkar: Arabikadlinte Simham’, said to be the biggest film ever made in Malayalam cinema history, was supposed to hit screens worldwide in March. Due to the novel Corona virus outbreak, the makers were forced to withhold the release. It proved to be a big setback for the team as expectations were riding huge. On the other hand, they were also fortunate that the film did not release during the time of crisis.

CJ Roy, one of the film’s producers, took to his social media handle about his thoughts on the release postponement. His post reads,

Sometimes it can be said as Lucky & Somtimes as Coincidence!!!. The Release of Dr Mohan Lal’s Mega Opus Big Budget 5 Language Movie which is Co Produced by me along with Producer Antony Perumbavoor.

I am Sad that the FULLY READY MOVIE did not Release on 26 March 2020 due to COVID but at the same time I am Happy it did Not release on 26 March and Suddenly Theaters went on Lock Down due to COVID. This is called as Happy and Sad at the Same time

‘Marakkar’ directed by Priyadarshan has some of the country’s biggest names in the cast and crew. The mammoth project is said to be made on a budget of around Rs 100 crores.

Rajisha Vijayan to play the female lead in Muttiah Muralitharan biopic

Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan is getting a biopic made in Tamil. The film which is said to be titled as ‘800’ will be directed by MS Sripathi. Vijay Sethupathi will be playing Muralitharan’s role in the film. Buzz is that Malayali actress Rajisha Vijayan has been approached to play the female lead’s role.

Muttiah Muralitharan married Chennai-based Madhimalar, daughter of the later doctor Ramamurthy who founded the famous Malar Hospitals. If reports are to be believed, Rajisha will be essaying Madhimalar’s role in the biopic. This will be her second film in Tamil after ‘Karnan’, in which she is paired with Dhanush.

Pre-production works for Muralitharan’s biopic has already begun. Telugu star Rana Daggubati’s banner Suresh Productions is producing the film in association with DAR Motion Pictures. Sam CS of ‘Vikram Vedha’ fame has been signed as the music director. Rest of the cast and crew are yet to be confirmed.

D44: Dhanush and Hansika to pair once again!

Dhanush has signed a new film with director Mithran Jawahar, with whom he has previously worked in ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’, ‘Kutty’, and ‘Uthamaputhiran’. Sun Pictures will be producing the film. As per reports, the film has two female leads and Hansika Motwani might be roped in to play one of the heroines. An official word is still awaited.

Dhanush currently has a promising line up of films. He already has two films gearing up for release — ‘Jagamathe Thandhiram’ and ‘Karnan’. He has also signed for films with directors Karthick Naren and ‘Ratchasan’ fame Ram Kumar. He also has a Hindi film titled ‘Atrangi Re’ coming up. Directed by Aanand L Rai, the film also stars Akshay Kumar and Sara Ali Khan.

Hansika Motwani meanwhile has ‘Maha’ and ‘Partner’ in her kitty. It must be noted that Dhanush and Hansika acted together previously in ‘Maapillai’, which was also the actress’ debut Tamil film.

Mohnalal’s new look for Barroz revealed?

Ever since the lockdown started, Mohanlal has been seen sporting a beard. Last day, a new photo of him got leaked online. The long, thick beard he is currently sporting is believed by many to be his look for his directorial debut ‘Barroz’. Shoot for this highly ambitious film was supposed to begin in June this year but due to the Covid-19 crisis, all plans had to be changed. It is not yet known if the makers are planning to start shooting this year.
Since it is a big scale film with several foreign actors in the cast, it seems highly impossible to shoot during this period.

‘Barroz’ is scripted by Jijo Punnoose, the visionary filmmaker who made India’s first 3D film ‘My Dear Kuttichathan’. It is the story of Barroz, a mythical figure who was the gaurdian of Vasco da Gama’s valuable treasures for 400 years. Mohanlal himself will be playing the titular role. Antony Perumbavoor is producing the film under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas.

Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam tests positive for Covid-19

Legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam on Wednesday informed that he has been tested positive for the novel Corona virus. In a video shared in his social media account, he opened up about the diagnosis. He further added that his fever has subsided and that he is doing perfectly fine now.

SPB, as he is popularly known, revealed that he had fever, a cold and chest congestion, following which he was tested for Covid-19. The test results came back positive and the doctors had advised to quarantined at home. However, he has decided to get admitted to a hospital as his family members were concerned. He is hopeful about his symptoms going away in two days. He also requested his friends not to call him to check on him as he is doing perfectly fine and is confident of getting discharged soon.

In the video, he is quoted saying, “Since the last two-three days, I was having a little discomfort. I had chest congestion, which for a singer is nothing to worry. I also had a cold and fever on and off. I didn’t want to take it easy, so I went to the hospital to get it checked. Doctors said that it is a mild case of Corona and I was asked to stay home and take medication as prescribed. But, I didn’t want to do that as my family is very concerned. So, I got myself admitted to the hospital. All my friends are here and I’m in good hands. I’m in good health and nobody has to worry about me. So, please don’t bother to call me and find out how I am. I’m perfectly alright except for the cold. Even the fever has subsided. In two days, I will be alright. Thank you for your concern. I couldn’t attend every single call. I have come here mostly to take rest, so that there won’t be any disturbance.

Thank you. I am fine, I will be fine.”

After shoot restrictions are lifted, Dulquer Salmaan’s next in Malayalam will be a cop film!

Dulquer Salmaan currently has multiple projects lined up, that too in different languages and the star is eagerly waiting for the restrictions to be lifted. In Malayalam, he will next start shooting for a cop film that will be directed by Rosshan Andrrews. Bobby-Sanjay duo is scripting the film and Dulquer’s own production house Wayfarer Films will be backing this film. Though he has appeared as a police officer briefly in ‘Vikramadithyan’, this will be his first full fledged cop role.

Dulquer was shooting for his Tamil film ‘Hey Sinamikaa’ when the nationwide lockdown was announced. The film which marks the directorial debut of dance choreographer Brinda is shaping up as a rom-com. Kajal Aggarwal and Aditi Rao Hydari will be seen as the female leads.

Apart from this, Dulquer also has a trilingual film in the pipeline. Hanu Raghavapudi of ‘Padi Padi Leche Manasu’ fame is set to direct the film, which is said to be a period love story set in the 1960s. Dulquer will be seen playing the role of an army officer named Lieutenant Ram in it. The film will be made in Telugu and released in Tamil and Malayalam as well.

Anna Ben starrer Helen to be remade in 4 languages!

Last year’s superhit Malayalam film ‘Helen’ is getting ready to be remade in multiple languages. As confirmed by the makers, the Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Hindi rights have already been sold. The Hindi version will have Jhanvi Kapoor in the lead. Jhanvi’s father Boney Kapoor and Zee Studios will be producing the film. Details regarding the director’s name and other crew members are not yet known.

In Tamil, Keerthi Pandian of ‘Thumbaa’ fame, plays the lead role. Her dad Arun Pandian is reprising the father’s role played by Lal in the original. The film is being directed by Gokul, who has previously helmed films like ‘Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara’, ‘Junga’, and ‘Kashmora’. Shoot is already at the halfway stage.

‘Helen’ directed by debutant Mathukutty Xavier is a survival thriller with Anna Ben playing the titular role. Releasing in November last year, the film had a successful theatrical run. It was received well by both the critics as well as the general public. Since it is a survival thriller, the story should appeal to a wide range of audience irrespective of the language.

While works for the Hindi and Tamil remakes have already begun, there is still no word about the cast and crew details of the Telugu and Kannada versions.

Few years back, there were reports about Suriya and Telugu filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas teaming up. A Tamil-Telugu bilingual was planned but it got dropped in the initial stages itself due to some unknown reasons. But more recently, there has been a strong buzz about the duo reuniting. Telugu medias are reporting that Trivikram has already completed the script and is waiting for Suriya’s dates.

Trivikram is one of the most successful filmmakers in Telugu cinema today. His last released film ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’ starring Allu Arjun was a massive commercial blockbuster. It it also set to be remade in Hindi with Kartik Aryan. Expectations will indeed be huge if Suriya-Trivikram project materializes. The star commands a big fan following in the Telugu states, so a Tamil-Telugu bilingual would be ideal.

Trivikram is most likely to team up with Jr NTR next. Suriya’s schedule is also packed with some interesting projects lined up. He has committed for new films with directors Hari, Vetrimaaran, Siva and Pandiraj.

Last day, the film’s director Lokesh Kanagaraj had also released a common display picture upon the request of Malavika’s fans in Twitter. The actress also wrote that she was looking forward to celebrate the birthday with ‘Master’ team but Covid-19 spoiled the plans.

‘Master’ is Malavika’s second outing in Tamil after ‘Petta’. She plays a college professor’s role in the film. Vijay also essays the part of a professor in it. His character John Durairaj is said to be the Dean of Students Association in an arts and science college. It is a fresh pair and their chemistry is something many are looking forward to.

During this lockdown period, Malayalam web series ‘Othalanga Thuruthu’ found a lot of fans in social medias. Though the makers have released just 6 episodes so far, the series has got a massive reach among the youngsters. It is now learnt that director Anwar Rasheed has offered to produce the movie adaptation of ‘Othalanga Thuruthu’. A formal announcement is expected to be made soon.

‘Othalanga Thuruthu’ is a fun web series that is written, directed and edited by Ambuji. Though the first episode was released almost a year back, the series found popularity only recently. All the 6-episodes have now garnered over 1.5 million views. The realistic treatment, overall quirkiness and the non-stop humour, that is both situational and exaggerated, has worked big-time.

It will be interesting to see how ‘Othalanga Thuruthu’ gets adapted to a movie format. Anwar Rasheed is known for being extremely successful, both as a director and a filmmaker. With someone like him backing the project, the young team should have the liberty to make a quality product without much compromise on budget. The series has Abin Bino, Jayesh Janardhan, and Jagadeesh Kumar in the lead roles. It remains to be seen if the same cast and crew will be retained for the film adaptation.
