Thanks to the positive word of mouth in cyber space, collections are gradually picking up in Kerala as well.
Marakkar will expand Malayalam cinema’s market like how Baahubali did for Telugu industry: Priyadarshan
If we take into account the commercial aspect alone, Indian cinema can be divided into pre-Baahubali era and post-Baahubali era. Such was the phenomenal success of the ‘Baahuhali’ films that every regional industry in the country wanted to cash in on that wave and make spectacle-heavy films. Over the last few year, several such films were made but none had the quality of the SS Rajamouli’s works. He single-handedly made heads turn beyond Bollywood and put Telugu cinema on the radar.
Malayalam filmmaker Priyadarshan who is coming up with a similarly ambitious film – ‘Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham’ – believes that his film will expand the market of Malayalam cinema just like how ‘Baahubali’ did for the Telugu industry. He has often repeated that ‘Marakkar’ will be the most technically perfect ever made in India.
‘Marakkar’ has been a dream that the director has been pursuing for over two decades. The epic film which is based on Kunjali Marakkar IV has superstar Mohanlal playing the lead role. Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief of Zamorin of Calicut in the 16th century, whose duty was to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. The film is being made on a huge budget of around 100 crores. Some of the country’s finest technicians and actors are associated with the project.
Suniel Shetty, Arjun Sarja, Keerthy Suresh, Pranav Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Ashok Selvan, Prabhu, Mukesh, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Siddique and many others are part of the cast. Several foreign actors are also playing crucial roles in the film. National award winning cinematographer Tirrru and production designer Sabu Cyril are part of the technical team.
Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are jointly producing the film, which is slated for a grand worldwide release on March 26. The film will be releasing in multiple languages in over 5000 theatres across the globe.
Anoop Menon, Murali Gopy, Ranjith and Baiju team up for Quit India
Anoop Menon, Murali Gopy, Ranjith and Baiju Santhosh are set to play the lead roles in an upcoming film titled ‘Quit India’. Rakesh Gopan, who had earlier made the film ‘100 Degree Celsius’, will be directing this film. Shibin Francis, who scripted films like ‘Pavada’, ‘Comrade In America’ (CIA) and ‘Underworld’ is penning this film as well.
Director Rakesh Gopan’s previous film ‘100 Degree Celsius’ was also a multi-starrer. It had Shwetha Menon, Meghna Raj, Bhama, Ananya and Haritha Parokod in the lead roles. While his debut film was a thriller based on a real life incident, ‘Quit India’ is a political flick. It will have Anoop Menon and Baiju essaying the roles of politicians, while filmmaker-turned-actor Ranjith plays the role of a bureaucrat. Murali Gopy will be seen as a power broker.
Sanjitha VS is producing the film under the banner Malar Cinemas. Shoot has been planned to begin later this month.

Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal Review: A thoroughly entertaining ‘rom-con’ film!
‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ starts off on a very ordinary note. We are introduced to two carefree youngsters who are into partying and stuff. Of course, one of them is our hero Sid (Dulquer Salmaan) and the other is the typical sidekick (Rakshan). Hero meets his girl, falls in love instantly and before you know, comes that mandatory love song where the couple is shown romancing around.
Just when I thought this is turning out to be a generic rom-com, comes the interesting part. With the introduction of a cop on trail, the film takes some twists and turns to land on a totally unexpected interval block. The second half then moves at a brisk pace and hardly gives any breathing space for the audience to think about the logic behind some of the scenes. The story moves from Chennai to Goa to Delhi and finally ends somewhere in Manipur. Though the run-time is a tad too long, eventually, the film ends on a hilarious note giving an overall satisfying feel.
Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal Review
Although the character does not pose any real challenge, Dulquer Salmaan was still at his charming best. His stylish looks and innate urbane attitude suits the character perfectly. Rakshan, who plays his buddy had a full-length role to play unlike the usual sidekick characters. He was good in bits and pieces but mostly annoying. However, one of the best scenes in the film belongs to him when he does the hilarious ‘Thalapathi’ spoof.
Ritu Varma’s dialogues and the way her character was established in the first half were all pure cringe. In hindsight, it was like director Desingh Periyasamy wanted to take a jibe on how heroines are usually portrayed in commercial Tamil films. Ritu actually had a solid character in the film and with the kind of talent she possesses, she simply owned it.
Another major role in the film is played by ace filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon. As the fit and dapper cop Prathap Chakravarthy, GVM was too good. The introduction he gets itself is like a hat tip to the iconic cop characters from his own films. He is such a sport to take up this role and you’ll know why when you watch the film.
Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal Review
‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ has some real good writing. Writer-director Desingh Periyasamy must have done a lot of research to get into the nuances of all the high-tech robbery. A heist film works only when you show a lot of innovative ideas and this film has plenty of them. Towards the end, when things all seem to turn out as expected, the director has one last trick up his sleeve and he employs it cleverly to give a hilarious finish.
It is not like ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ is a flawless film. The first 20-minutes or so is real bland. While the production values are top class, the tendency to establish a particular locality by repeatedly using the drone shot could have been avoided. The songs composed by Masala Coffee were fun and in sync with the fun mood of the film.
Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal Review
Overall, ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ is one of those jolly films that is totally worth the time and money. You can sit back, engage yourself, have a hearty laugh and leave the cinema hall with a pleasantly fulfilling feel.

His February releases – ‘Varane Avashyamund’ (VA) and ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ (KKK) have both been lapped up by the audience. While VA has already crossed the Rs 25 crore mark at the box office, KKK is slowly picking up and is turning out to be a sleeper hit.
After reaping hits in Malayalam and Tamil, Dulquer is now set to do a Telugu film. The actor himself revealed this in a recent interview. Though the actor refused to divulge more details, it is said to be a big project backed by one of the top production houses in Tollywood. He will start shooting for the film in the second half of the year. Dulquer is already familiar with the Telugu audience thanks to the huge success of ‘Mahanati’, in which he played the role of late actor Gemini Ganesan.
