Kalakkatha: Check out this unique song from Ayyappanum Koshiyum

The first single from Prithviraj-Biju Menon starrer ‘Ayyppanum Koshiyum’ has just been released online. The song composed by Jakes Bejoy is a very unique one and sounds like a folk number. A woman named Nanchamma has written the lyrics and sung the track. By the end of the video, it is revealed that she is not aware of Prithviraj or Biju Menon or anything about the film. Due credits to the makers for handpicking such an original artist. Prithviraj has mentioned that ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ has one of the most unusual soundtracks for a mainstream film in Malayalam. He also praised composer Jakes Bejoy for delivering director Sachy’s vision to perfection.

The story of ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ is set in the Attapadi region. It is centred around a conflict between a policeman and a retired solider over a legal issue. Biju Menon plays Ayappan Nair, a middle-aged cop and Prithviraj essays the part of Koshy Kurian, a havildar who is retired from army after 16 years of service.

Veteran director Ranjith, Anna Reshma Rajan, Siddique, Anu Mohan, Sabumon Abdusamad, Anil Nedumangad, Shaju Sreedhar and many others are part of the supporting cast. Sudeep Elamon of ‘Pathinettam Padi’ and ‘Finals’ fame is the DOP. The film is produced by director Ranjith and PM Sasidharan under the banner of Gold Coin Motion Picture Company.

Mariyam Vannu Vilakkoodhi opens to positive response from youth audience

Three Malayalam films — ‘Mariyam Vannu Vilakkoodhi’, ‘Anveshanam’ and ‘Gauthamante Ratham’ had hit screens last day (January 31). All three films have opened to good response. While ‘Mariyam Vannu Vilakkoodhi’ is a stoner comedy, ‘Anveshanam’ is a medical thriller with an emotional core. ‘Gauthamante Ratham’ starring Neeraj Madhav is a feel-good family flick.

‘Mariyam Vannu Vilakkoodhi’ written and directed by debutant Jenith Kachappilly has opened to largely positive response. Youth audience in particular seem to have lapped up the film. It is an unusual stoner comedy that comes across as a thoroughly enjoyable entertainer.

The film stars the ‘Premam’ gang of Siju Wilson, Krishna Shankar, Shabareesh Varma and Althaf Salim in the lead roles. The main story evolves over a single night when a gang of friends get together and smoke pot. This leads to absurd yet hilarious situations.

‘Mariyam Vannu Vilakkoodhi’ is not a run-of-the-mill fun flick. It belongs to a genre rarely attempted in Malayalam and yet is entertaining. With the support of the youth audience, the film is expected to have a good run at the box office.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s next film, tentatively titled as ‘Thalaivar 168’, is currently on the floors. The film is written and directed by Siva. Sun Pictures is producing it. Interestingly, the film has four heroines as part of the cast. Veterans Meena and Khushboo were the first to join the team. Later, Keerthy Suresh’s name got announced. More recently, came the surprise announcement about Nayanthara starring in the film.

Among the four heroines, only Keerthy Suresh is yet to share screen space with Rajinikanth. Meena has worked with him both as a child actor (Anbulla Rajinikanth) and as his pair (Ejamaan, Muthu, Veera). Khushboo has acted with him in films like ‘Annamalai’, ‘Dharmathin Thalaivan’ etc. Siva’s film marks Nayanthara second successive outing with Rajinikanth after the recently released ‘Darbar’. The two had earlier shared screen space in ‘Chandramukhi’ and in a song sequence in ‘Sivaji’.

However, it it still not known who among the four heroines plays Rajinikanth’s pair in this upcoming film. Even the technical team of ‘Viswasam’ comprising of DOP Vetri, music director Imman and editor Ruben have been retained as such. Prakash Raj, Soori and Sathish are also part of the supporting cast.

Anveshanam Review: Gripping and emotional in equal measure!

Anveshanam Review: Gripping and emotional in equal measure!

‘Anveshanam’ opens with a kid who is severely injured in the head being rushed to the hospital. During the primary examination, the authorities smell something fishy that ends up in the involvement of the police force. The parents are in a spot of bother now. So the ball rolls within these three set of players – the parents, cops and the hospital authorities. Set in a limited space within a hospital and a very short timeframe, this film offers an engaging experience that often gets very emotional.

‘Anveshanam’ is the sophomore outing of director Prasobh Vijayan, who made his debut with the violent survival thriller ‘Lilli’. Coming to his second film, his making style is more refined and manages to keep you hooked. Francis Thomas has scripted the film with additional screenplay and dialogues by Ranjeet Kamala Sankar and Salil V. The film follows a non-linear pattern which keeps the guessing game on in what is otherwise an emotional drama. However, the attempts to give a fair picture about the chronology gets annoying after a point.

Anveshanam Malayalam Movie Review

‘Anveshanam’ is powered by some excellent performances. Jayasurya and Shurthi Ramachandran as the couple in despair have done their parts well. The trauma they go through is convincingly portrayed. A particular sequence in the latter half where Jayasurya breaks down is sure to tug your heartstrings. Still it is Leona Lishoy as the pregnant police officer who is the most impressive among the cast. As an assertive, honest cop who seeks the truth, Leona was at her best. She is well supported by Nandu, as her subordinate, who gets the body language and mannerisms of an experienced policeman spot on.

Vijay Babu was also able to display a commendable performance. Worth a mention is an extremely emotional scene involving him and Jayasurya where he sadly gets a raw deal. The camera is completely focused on the latter’s face thereby losing out on Vijay Babu’s expressions. Lena, Srikanth Murali, Jai Vishnu, Lal and Shaju Sreedhar have also done justice to their roles.

Anveshanam Malayalam Movie Review

Sujith Vassudev’s cinematography felt odd at several points. The song that rolls along with the title credits has been shot in an unique manner. Towards the end, if you see their choice does make sense. It is done as a sort of foreshadowing. There are also multiple moments where the camera keeps moving during tense conversations which kind of lessens the impact. Jakes Bejoy’s background score helps in amplifying the gripping factor.

In a nutshell, ‘Anveshanam’, which has a run time of just under two hours, is definitely worth a watch. Without getting preachy, the film also conveys a very important message.
