Mammootty in talks for antagonist role in Thani Oruvan 2?

Mammootty has had a great year so far with four releases in three languages, and all of them enjoying a fair run. It is after a long gap that the star has shown interest in doing other language films, the main reason for this being the space to challenge the actor in himself. Both ‘Peranbu’ in Tamil and ‘Yatra’ in Malayalam had solid scope for performance, something that has been dearly missed in the roles offered to him in Malayalam. It is now being reported that another big offer has come his way in the form of ‘Thani Oruvan 2’.

Tamil filmmaker Mohan Raja is currently working on the pre-production of the sequel to his superhit 2015 action-thriller ‘Thani Oruvan’. While Jayam Ravi and Arvind Swami played the lead roles in it, the sequel will have Jayam Ravi pitted against a new villain. Interestingly, Mammootty has been approached to play the antagonist’s part.

Arvind Swami’s villain role, Siddharth Abhimanyu, from ‘Thani Oruvan’ was a highly talked about one. As an affluent scientist who is also a kingpin in criminal activities, Arvind Swami was amazingly effortless and made it a memorable character. It will be tough for any ordinary actor to emulate that performance as parallels are certain to be drawn.

However, a proven actor like Mammootty will be able to pull it off in his own style. Moreover, it will also be a new experience for the Tamil audience as they are used to seeing Mammootty in softer roles. It remains to be seen if he commits to the project as he already has a handful of films lined up in Malayalam.

Govind Vasantha back to Malayalam after 96

Govind is currently one of the most wanted music directors in the Tamil film industry. The sensational success of Vijay Sethupathi-Trisha starrer ’96’ has helped him bag back to back big projects in Tamil. After a long gap, Govind is now making his comeback to his home turf, Malayalam industry. His comeback film is ‘Prithvi’, directed by debutant Abhijith Ashokan and produced by August Cinemas. Govind’s last full length work in Malayalam was ‘Haram’, released four years back in 2015.

For ‘Prithvi’, Govind has already songs with the legendary Bombay Jayshres and Bijibal. Last day, he took to social medias to share the news, along with sharing photos taken during the recording sessions.

Govind’s post reads,

I’m so glad to announce My first malayalam film I committed after 96, “Prithvi” directed by @Abijith Asokan is a movie with a beautiful beautiful storyline and some great moments. And this one is close to my heart because I got two artist extraordinaires to sing for my songs . @Bombay jayshree and The best Bijibal Maniyil (sic)

Besides ‘Prithvi’, Govind is also composing for another Malayalam film, ‘Padavettu’ starring Nivin Pauly in the lead. In Tamil, he has Jeethu Joseph’s upcoming film with Karthi, ‘Tughlaq Darbar’ with Vijay Sethupathi and an untitled one under Mani Ratnam’s production.

Kaappaan postponed; Solo release for Saaho

The highly anticipated Mohanlal-Suriya starrer ‘Kaappaan’ was scheduled for release on August 30 but has now be postponed for September 20. This means that the multilingual biggie ‘Saaho’, starring Prabhas, will have a solo release on August 30. It is ideal that the makers of ‘Kaappaan’ chose to push the release, for a clash between two such big films could have had a impact in the box office collections.

‘Kaappaan’ is touted to be an action packed thriller. While Mohanlal plays the Indian Prime Minister’s role, Suriya essays the role of a high-rank National Security Guard (NSG) officer, who is in charge of the PM’s security. Arya also plays a prominent role as Mohanlal’s son. The cast also includes Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani, Shamna Kasim and Samuthirakani. Besides Tamil, the movie is also releasing in Telugu. The Telugu version has been titled as ‘Bandobast’. Both the Tamil and Telugu versions are expected to be released simultaneously.

Jackie Shroff, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Chunky Pandey, Mandira Bedi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Arun Vijay, Lal, Vennela Kishore and Tinnu Anand are also playing prominent roles. It will be releasing in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil languages.

2019 has been a great year for Malayalam cinema with a string of high quality films hitting screens back to back. As we are into the latter half of the year, let’s take a look at the 10 best films that have released so far.

Coming from the trusted team of Dileesh Pothan, Syam Pushkaran and Fahadh Faasil, expectations were always high on this film. Compared to their previous two outings – ‘Maheshinte Prathikaram’ and ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’, both of which won National awards, the trio’s roles was different this time. They jointly produced this brilliantly made film that broke multiple stereotypes about what constitutes an ideal family. Syam Pushakaran’s adept writing coupled with skilled direction from debutant Madhu C Narayanan and the performances of the lead cast meant that ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ was a true winner in every sense. When it got released on digital platforms after a successful 100-day theatrical run was done with, it got an even wider reach with a large number of non-Malayali cinephiles lapping it up.

2) Unda

In his four-decade long career, Mammootty has done several memorable cop roles but not one like Mani sir of ‘Unda’. This Khalid Rahman directorial tells the moving story of an unit of policemen from Kerala posted in India’s dreadful red corridor without sufficient ammunition and other facilities. Inspired from true events, ‘Unda’ is a gripping tale that paints a clear picture about the policemen’s fear, helplessness, blatant apathy of the higher officials, how casteism works within the force and also about the dismal lives of the tribal community. It is a politically layered film that touched upon multiple issues that appeals to a pan-Indian audience.

3) Virus

Aashiq Abu’s ‘Virus’ is a semi-fictional account of how the state of Kerala withstood last year’s deadly Nipah virus scare. Writers Muhsin Parari, Suhas and Sharfu came up with what is easily one of the best written screenplays in recent years. The makers also pulled off a casting coup of sorts by assembling several top actors, who all did justice to their characters. Though there have been a few criticisms about the factuality in the story and how the government machinery’s role in the mission was not given prominence, ‘Virus’, from an aesthetic point of view, is a superbly made no-nonsense medical investigative thriller.

4) Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal

The latest sensation in Malayalam, ‘Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal’ is a classic example of the golden phase that the industry is currently going through. You don’t need big stars to deliver hits anymore. Starring a bunch of kids and Vineeth Sreenivasan, this breezy little film is registering big numbers at the box office. Of late, most Malayalam films that dealt with school life and teenage romance were underwhelming. There were forced efforts to evoke nostalgia, and subsequently these films didn’t have the innate innocence and simplicity. This Girish AD directorial is a refreshing addition as it’s a rollicking fun entertainer that strikes a chord with everyone who has had a memorable high school life.

5) Ishq

‘Ishq’ was Shane Nigam’s second successive hit of the year after ‘Kumbalangi Nights’. The movie is directed Anuraj Manohar and scripted by Ratheesh Ravi. Superficially seen, it’s a revenge driven film about moral policing. However, what ‘Ishq’ offers is a bloody big blow to toxic masculinity. Towards the end, it creates a doubt in the viewer’s mind about identifying the hero and villain in the film. Excellently performed by the two lead actors, Shane Nigam and Shine Tom Chacko, ‘Ishq’ is a honest film that dares to call spade a spade.

6) Thamaasha

Thamaasha directed by Ashraf Hamza is about a bald middle-aged college professor’s insecurities and his trouble in finding a suitable. Malayalam cinema is known for glorifying the moustache-twirling alpha male heroes. So stories like these come as a breath of fresh air. While Vinay Forrt carried the film effortlessly on his shoulders, the surprise package in the film came in the form of Chinnu Chandini, who impressed big time.

7) Uyare
