Aana Alaralodalaral Review: A simple time-pass family entertainer

Vineeth Sreenivasan’s latest outing as an actor, Aana Alaralodalaral has hit screens today. Malayali audience have seen several ‘Aana’ films in the past like Gajakesariyogam, Pattabishekam, Aanachandam and Guruvayoor Kesavan to name a few. Aana Alarodalaral is the latest to this list. Directed by debutant Dileep Menon, the movie caught the audience attention thanks to its quirky title and the impressive promos. Let’s see how the movie has eventually turned out to be.

The plot is set in a village named Vaikuntapuram where Hindus and Muslim coexist in harmony. The conflict starts with the arrival of the elephant ‘Shekarankutty’. The two groups clash over the ownership of the elephant. The Hindu brigade led by Suraj Venjaramoodu is hell-bent that the elephant be donated to the temple while the Muslim community strictly oppose it. In between this, there is a love story between Hashim (Vineeth Sreenivasan) and Parvathy (Anu Sithara). There is a lot of drama in the proceedings before it all ends on predictably happy note.

Sarath Balan has scripted this movie with a noble message about the need to coexist with religious harmony. Almost all the characters here are caricaturish with over the top performances. But the director has packaged it pretty well with a good dose of humour and some peppy music. The movie also has a satirical tone with a dig at the present political scenario.

On the performance side, Thesni Khan was a relevation from her usually typecast roles. As the authoritarian matriarch of a Muslim family, she did a fine job with her limited screen presence. Vineeth Sreenivasan as Hashim did justice to his character but did not have enough scope for performance. Anu Sithara is gorgeous as ever and she did have a couple of noteworthy scenes, which she performed well. Suraj Venjaramoodu had a negative role to perform and the character was safe in his hands. Vishak Nair has evidently shown improvement from his Aanandam and Chunkzz days.

The movie has an elaborate supporting cast which includes Hareesh Kanaran, Vijayaraghavan, Mamukoya, Dharamajan, Innocent and Srikanth Murali among others. But the lion’s share of screen time is consumed by Nandilath Arjun, the elephant. It is very difficult to make a movie with an animal, particularly ones like this where the whole plot is centered around it. So, the makers deserve some appreciation for that. Actor Dileep’s voice-over for the elephant was also a good choice.

Technically, the movie has some good visuals and was tightly edited under two hours. The ever dependable Shaan Rahman has given some good songs and background score.

Overall, Aana Alaralodalaral is a simple time pass entertainer that can be watched with kids and families as there are no double meaning jokes or profanity. It follows the typical old Malayalam rural-entertainer style.

Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar to start rolling from June!

Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar to start rolling from June!

Kunjali Marakkar is perhaps the most talked about Malayalam movie in recent years. Two production houses – August Cinema and Moonshot Entertainment – had announced their projects with the two superstars of Malayalam industry, Mammootty and Mohanlal, respectively. But it now looks like only Mammootty’s camp is taking the project forward.

Veteran cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Santhosh Sivan is directing Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar IV under the banner of August Cinema. Pre-production works for the movie is currently progressing and trustworthy reports suggest that it will go on floors from June, next year.

Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief in the 16th century, to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. TP Rajeev and Shankar Ramakrishnan are jointly scripting the upcoming movie after doing years of research works. Reportedly, August Cinema is planning to invest around 50 crores for the movie. Apart from Mammootty, some other non Malayali will also be part of the cast. However, the names have not yet been revealed. The makers are also in talks with foreign technicians to associate with this ambitious project.

In a recent interview Santhosh Sivan said that the movie has great prominence to the technical aspects since nearly 70% of the portions has to be shot mid-sea. He assured that the movie would meet global standards in its technicalities like VFX and CG works.

Santhosh Sivan, actor Arya and Shaji Natesan are jointly funding this big budget film under their banner August Cinema.

Shahid Kapoor in talks for the Hindi remake of Arjun Reddy!

Shahid Kapoor in talks for the Hindi remake of Arjun Reddy!

The Telugu flick Arjun Reddy starring Vijay Devarakonda in the titular role is one of the biggest hits in South Indian cinema this year. The movie directed by debutant Sandeep Reddy Vanga became a sensational success and won critical acclaim as well. Talks about Arjun Reddy being remade in other languages have been doing the rounds for sometime now. Tamil star Vikram’s son Dhruv is making his acting debut with Arjun Reddy’s remake which has been titled as Varma. National award winning filmmaker Bala is directing the movie.

In Hindi meanwhile, Ranveer Singh was approached with the remake. The actor had initially shown his interest to do the film but latest reports suggest that Shahid Kapoor will be replacing him. Apparently, Ranveer is hesitant to do another dark emotionally-high character after acting as the menacing Alauddin Khilji in Padmavati.

Arjun Reddy tells the story of a medical surgeon who falls madly in love with his college junior. He becomes alcoholic post break-up and the rest of the story is about how he redeems himself. If reports are to be believed, Sandeep Venga Reddy, who directed the original, will be helming the Hindi version as well.

To play this character, Shahid would require intense preparation, including shedding his body weight to look drugged. Incidentally, the actor played a druggie rockstar in last year’s Udta Punjab. Vijay Deverakonda’s stellar performance as Arjun Reddy was widely appreciated, so Shahid has some big shoes to fill in.

An official announcement of the Hindi remake has not yet been made.

Director Vignesh Shivn confirms that Thaana Serntha Koottam is adapted from Special 26!

Suriya’s Thaana Serntha Koottam (TSK) is gearing up for a Pongal release, this coming January. Promising young filmmaker Vignesh Shivn is directing this movie, which is currently in the final stages of post-production. TSK has high expectations after the impressive promos and the sensational success of Anirudh’s single ‘Sodakku’.

Ever since the project was announced, talks have been rife about the movie being a remake of Akshay Kumar’s superhit film Special 26. With the trailer release, the talks became louder but the makers did make any statement regarding the same. Finally, the director himself has come out clearing the airs.

In a recent interview, Vignesh Shivn confirmed that his movie is adapted from Special 26. They had bought the remake rights of the original and later adapted it in a different style. The director added that they have taken only the real incident behind Special 26 and hence is not a scene-by-scene remake.

Special 26 directed by Neeraj Pandey is a heist thriller. It is about a gang of imposters who hatch brilliant plans to loot money. The movie in turn is inspired by the 1987 Opera House heist where a group posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers executed an income tax raid in a jewellery shop in Mumbai.

Suriya is reprising Akshay’s role from the original. From the promos, we presume that Ramya Krishnan is playing Anupam Kher’s role and Karthik is reprising Manoj Bajpai’s. TSK has Keerthy Suresh as the female lead while it was Kajal Aggarwal in the original.

Kalaiarasan, Saranya Ponvannan, Kovai Sarala, KS Ravikumar, RJ Balaji, Anandraj,Sathyan, comedian Senthil, Thambi Ramaiah and many others are also part of TSK’s supporting cast. Young sensation Anirudh Ravichander is handling the music while national award winner Sreekar Prasad is editing the movie. It produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under the banner of Studio Green.

Shafi’s next after Sherlock Toms is with Kunchacko Boban!

Looks like Kunchacko Boban is on a signing spree. He already has a handful of projects coming up next year and has now signed for yet another one. After a long gap, Kunchacko Boban will be reuniting with director Shafi for a comedy entertainer.

Benny P Nayarambalam is scripting this film. The scriptwriter shares a very good rapport with director Shafi as they have previously worked together five times. The duo’s last outing was the super hit Dileep starrer Marykkundoru Kunjaadu. They have also worked with Kunchacko Boban in Lollipop and Kalyanaraman.

Shafi’s last release Sherlock Toms with Biju Menon was panned heavily by the critics but ended as an average grosser. The director will be hoping to get back to winning ways with his upcoming Kunchacko Boban starrer. Scripting for the movie is currently on and an official announcement will be made soon.

Meanwhile, Kunchacko Boban has completed shooting for Sugeeth’s Shikkari Shambu. He is currently working for cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Sreejith Vijayan’s directorial debut, Kuttanadan Marpappa. After finishing that, he will be joining the sets of Ramesh Pisharody’s debut film Panchavarna Thaththa which also stars Jayaram in the lead. National award winning documentary filmmaker Sou Sadanandan’s yet-to-be-titled family entertainer is another project in his kitty. His next release will be Anil Radhakrishna Menon’s Diwanjinoola Grand Prix, in which he plays the role of a district collector.

Masterpiece Review: A typical mass entertainer!

Masterpiece Review: A typical mass entertainer!

Megastar Mammootty’s highly anticipated film Masterpiece has hit screens today, officially kick-starting the Christmas season. Ajai Vasudev of Rajadhiraja fame has directed the movie and is scripted by Udhayakrishna, who is fresh from the historic success of Pulimurugan. Masterpiece has released with tremendous hype and lets see if it was actually lived up to all that.

As the promos indicated, Masterpiece is a campus based mass entertainer. The plot is set in Travancore Maharaja college where two group of students, Royal Warriors and Real Fighters, are at loggerheads. Amidst their issues, there occurs a murder at the college. English professor Edward Livingston aka Eddy lands at this crucial juncture and from there the movie is mostly centered around him with some twists and turns towards the climax.

Udhayakrishna has scripted a whodunit thriller with a campus backdrop. However, the plot lacks the novelty factor as it follows a more or less predictable pattern. He has infused all the necessary ingredients that one would expect from a mass masala entertainer. Director Ajai Vasudev’s love for stunts continue from where it ended in Rajadhiraja. But thankfully, the fight sequences are choreographed much better this time.

As Eddy, the 66-year-old Mammootty is handsome as ever while also giving an effortless performance. The character posed no serious challenge to an actor par excellence like him. He enters the proceedings nearly an hour after the movie’s start and straightway takes it on his shoulders with his incredibly stylish looks and screen presence. Mammootty was ably supported by Unni Mukundan, who, as always, has rocked it in the action blocks.

The supporting cast includes a host of youngsters led by Gokul Suresh, Maqbool Salman and Arjun Nandakumar. They have all done their parts decently well. Among the ladies, Poonam Bajwa appears as a faculty member and Varalakshmi Sarathkumar as a tough superior police officer. Mahima Nambiar is also there in a less prominent role. Santhosh Pandit and Pashanam Shaji take care of the humour department, but unfortunately their numbers have failed to click.

Technically, there is nothing exceptional about Masterpiece. Vinod Ilampallay’s camera work captures the colourful and vibrant college atmosphere. Deepak Dev’s music was not up to the mark with a loud background score and a couple of passable songs.

Overall, Masterpiece is a typical mass masala entertainer where logic takes the backseat. It is sure to work with the fans and action flick lovers. The families will also have a good time this Christmas season for the sheer entertainer the movie offers

Pranav Mohanlal’s debut film as a lead actor Aadhi is gearing up to hit screens early next year. The official trailer of this Jeethu Joseph directorial has been released today. It is a typical Jeethu Joseph style trailer with no loud music or flashy cuts. A very simple trailer that gives a sneak-peak to the protagonist Aadhi’s life.

Lena and Siddique play Pranav’s parents in the movie. Noted Telugu actor Jagpathi Babu, who was last seen in Malayalam in Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan, is the villain in Aadhi. The supporting cast also includes Anusree, Aditi Ravi, Sijoy Varghese, Siju Wilson, Tony Luke Krishna Shankar and Sharafudheen.

Pranav’s performance in the fight sequences is said to be the movie’s major highlight. Prior to the movie’s shoot, he trained in Parkour for a few months as his character in the movie demanded such traits. Foreign stunt masters were flown in to choreograph the stylish Parkour scenes. Towards the end of the trailer, we are shown a few shots of Pranav performing Parkour.

Antony Perumbavoor is producing this movie under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. The makers are eyeing a Republic Day release in January but an official confirmation regarding the same has not yet been made.

Salute: Shah Rukh Khan replaces Aamir Khan in Rakesh Sharma biopic!

Biopics are much in demand in Bollywood these days. Aamir Khan was supposed to act in one based on the life of India’s legendary astronaut Rakesh Sharma. Sidharth Roy Kapur is backing this ambitious project titled as Salute and Mahesh Mathai of Broken Thread and Bhopal Express was roped in as the director. However, the movie has seen a big change now as Aamir opted out owing to his busy schedule.

Latest reports from Bollywood medias suggest that Shah Rukh Khan might take up the film. Reportedly, Aamir personally met Shah Rukh and asked him to star in the film. After discussions with producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, Shah Rukh has agreed to be a part of the movie. Priyanka Chopra was earlier confirmed for the movie when Aamir Khan was supposed to star in it. With Shah Rukh replacing him, it is not yet known if Priyanka will be retained to play the female lead.

Rakesh Sharma is a former Air Force Pilot who flew aboard Soyuz T-11 in 1984, as part of a joint program between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Soviet Inter cosmos space program. He had spent 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes in space and remains to this day the only Indian to travel to space.

Interestingly, Salute is not Shah Rukh Khan’s first film on space or astronomy. He had earlier played a NASA engineer in the widely acclaimed film Swades, directed by Ashtoush Gowraiker. SRK is currently shooting for Anand L Rai’s film with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif in which he plays a dwarf. Aamir Khan on the other hand is busy with Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs of Hindostan, also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Dangal fame Fatima Sana Shaikh.
