Rajeev Ravi’s second directorial Kammattipaadam is one of the most talked about Malayalam movies of this decade. It was nothing like what we have seen previously in Malayalam cinema. It was a coming of age gangster flick, but not the run-of-the-mill kind. The movie was about friendship, betrayal, discrimination and the politics of survival. It showcased the hard-hitting reality of how Kochi city was urbanized on the grounds of Kammattipadam.

Soon after its release in May, last year, the movie attained a cult status among the cinephiles of the state. The politics it discussed and the extraordinary performances of the lead actors were widely talked about. Vinayakan and debutant Manikandan Achari overshadowed lead actor Dulquer Salmaan with their stellar performances as Ganga and Balan. And, they deservingly won last year’s Kerala State Award for best actor and second actor respectively.

Ever since the release of Kammattipaadam, fans have been enquiring about when the movie’s uncut version would be released. Rajeev Ravi’s wife and actress-turned-filmmaker Geetu Mohandas finally confirmed that more footage from the movie will be released very soon.

At the ongoing IFFK, where her movie Liar’s Dice is being screened, Geetu was asked about Kammattipaadam and she said that the 4 hr version will be released soon. She added that the extraordinary response from fans have inspired them to release the uncut version. Apparently, they were planning to release it a while back but could not as they were caught up with their own respective commitments.

It’s indeed a great news for all Kammattipaadam fans out there. Due to the runtime constraints and censor board rules, the makers had to chop off quite a few scenes. Like others, we are also waiting to watch the uncut version. Stay tuned to this space for more updates

First in Kerala: A ladies special show for Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam!!

As we all know Suriya has a great fan following in Kerala. Ever since the Vaaranam Aayiram days, his charm and good looks has won him scores of female fans in the state. As per latest reports, Suriya’s upcoming release Thaana Serntha Koottam is set to become the first film in the state’s history to have a special screening for women.

Reportedly, his fans are organizing this first of its kind of show in the capital city, Trivandrum. Bookings have already been opened for this special screening. Suriya has a huge number of female fans majorly due to his good onscreen and off screen image, sans any unwanted controversies.

Thaana Serntha Koottam directed by Vignesh Shivan, of Poda Podi and Naanum Rowdy Dhaan fame, is a fun filled commercial entertainer. The movie is loosely inspired from Akshay Kumar’s superhit film Special 26. Malayali actress Keerthy Suresh is paired opposite Suriya for the first time with TSK.

The movie also has a strong supporting cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, Kalaiarasan, Karthik, Nandha, Sathyan, popular yesteryear comedian Senthil, Saranya Ponvannan, Kovai Sarala, KS Ravikumar, RJ Balaji, Anandraj and Thambi Ramaiah among others.

KE Gnanavel Raja’s Studio Green is producing this movie which is slated for a grand Pongal release on January 12.

After Thani Oruvan, director Mohan Raja is back again with another socially relevant film- Velaikkaran. The movie starring Sivakarthikeyan, Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara in lead roles is one of the most awaited Tamil films of the year. Recently, the movie was screened for the censor board officials for film certification. It is reported that the officials were highly impressed by the movie and awarded it a clean U certificate without cutting any scene.

Velaikkaran lies on similar lines to Thani Oruvan, as it is packaged as a commercial entertainer with a very relevant social message. While that film was about medical mafia, Velaikkaaran deals with food adulteration and how a slum dweller fights against the corrupt system. The makers have dedicated this upcoming movie to the working class people.

Velaikkaran discusses some very serious issues and the makers are confident that it will be very much relatable to the audience. Sivakarthikeyan had recently made a breaking announcement that he would not be acting in advertisements any more. Apparently, the movie also talks about how ad films are misleading and the impact that it has among the general public.

Velaikkaran’s stellar star cast also includes Nayanthara, Sneha, Prakash Raj, RJ Balaji, Sathish, Rohini and many others. Anirudh Ravichander has done the music and his songs have already turned into chartbusters. RD Raja’s 24 AM Studios is funding this big budget movie.

The wait is finally over as the makers of Odiyan have unveiled the young and fit avatar of Mohanlal. The veteran star looks terrific and robust in this new look sans moustache. He has done a remarkable job in achieving the same look as that in the first look poster. This 34 second teaser features Mohanlal as the mysterious Odiyan Manikyan and is well complemented by Sam CS’s excellent background score.

Odiyan is a fantasy film that will have a mix of action, romance and magical realism. It is primarily about Odividya, a black magic practice and people who practice it are called odiyans. National award winner Harikrishnan has scripted this movie and VA Shrikumar Menon is directing it.

The movie’s story is set in three different timelines starting from the pre-electricty days in the 1950s to 2000. Mohanlal’s Manikyan is a renowned odiyan who lived in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in Palakkad. The movie follows his life from his childhood to 60s; so the actor will be appearing in multiple looks as Manikyan.

Mohanlal has been on a break for over a month now to reduce his weight. He has been training with a team of 25 people who monitor his diet and workouts. Reportedly, he has shed around 15 kgs to play the younger part of Manikyan. The movie’s third schedule is expected to kick-start next week.

Odiyan also stars Manju Warrier, Prakash Raj, Kailas, Narain, Siddique, Nandu, Sana Althaf and Innocent in prominent roles. This big budget movie is funded by Mohanlal’s own production house Aashirvad Cinemas.

Poonam Bajwa is one of the most luckiest non-Malayali female actors. Right from her debut Malayalam film China Town, she has got the opportunity to act alongside some of the biggest starts in the industry. Her next release in Malayalam is Ajai Vasudev’s Masterpiece in which she is sharing screen space with megastar Mammootty.

Masterpiece is her third film with Mammootty after working with him in Venicile Vyapari (2011) and Shikkari, a Kannada-Malayalam bilingual released in 2012. In a recent interview to DC, the actress was full of praise for her co-star.

She is quoted saying, “It is always amazing to work with him. You can learn things just by watching him, like his commitment to the craft. He is surely an inspiration for any actor. I still remember my apprehensions during my first movie with him. I was intimidated. That movie had my longest dialogue. It was nerve-wracking for me. But, he was very cool about it. His inputs would make your work easier. He is actually chill to work with.”

In Masterpiece, Poonam Bajwa plays the role of Smitha, a college professor. The movie scripted by Udhayakrishna is a campus based mass thriller. Expecations are high among the audience for this movie gearing up for a grand Christmas release on December 22.

Director Venkat Prabhu is back with his next, Party, a fun filled entertainer on the lines of his 2010 comedy entertainer Goa. The official teaser of the film was released last night via YouTube. It is a fun teaser that instantly reminds one of Goa, with an island setting and bikini clad girls.

Party has a stellar star cast lead by Malayalam actor Jayaram, Sathyaraj, Jai, Shiva, Shaam, Nivetha Pethuraj, Sampath, Naseer, Ramya Krishnan, Sanchitha Shetty and Regina Cassandra. Jayaram rocks the teaser in his stylish grey bearded avatar and looks like he has a very solid role in the movie.

Jayaram has previously worked with director Venkat Prabhu in Saroja, which was released back in 2008 He played an antagonist in the movie. Venkat Prabhu knows the pulse of the Tamil audience and he is known for churning out commercial entertainers. Party also promises to be a rollicking entertainer aimed at the younger generation of cinema goers.

Venkat Prabhu’s brother actor Premgi Amaren is composing the music for the film. Rajesh Yadav is cranking the camera and Praveen KL is handling edits in Party. The movie is being produced by T Siva under the banner of Amma Creations.

Masterpiece director Ajai Vasudev to team up with Dileep for an action film!

Dileep has been through some tough times this year but he has shrugged all that off and is now concentrating on his professional commitments. The actor is currently shooting for debutant Rathish Ambat’s epic film Kammara Sambhavam. After that he is expected to join the sets of Professor Dinkan, a big budget fantasy film made in 3D format.

As per latest reports, Dileep has committed for a new film with Ajai Vasudev. The director is known for helming Mammootty starrers like Rajadhiraja and the yet-to-be-released Masterpiece. His new film with Dileep is also said to be an action flick, on the lines of his previous ones.

Udhayakrishna, who has scripted both the movies of Ajai Vasudev, will be penning this one as well. More details regarding the cast and crew or when the film would go on floors is not yet known. Reports suggest that Dileep would be teaming up with his close friend and filmmaker Nadirshah for a family entertainer next year. His film with Ajai Vasudev might start rolling only after the completion of Nadirshah’s movie.

Parvathy is known to be one of the most outspoken female actors in the Malayalam film industry. The actor has often raised her voice against various issues, in fact she was the among to first to talk about the existence of casting couch in the industry. Parvathy has made yet another bold statement, this time about the controversial Mammootty starrer Kasaba.

Parvathy recently attended an interactive session held by the Women In Cinema Collective (WCC) in the ongoing IFFK. The actress was talking about how misogyny has been prevalent in Malayalam cinema and why it should to be done away at the earliest.

Parvathy said, “Unfortunately, I happened to watch a called Kasaba recently and with all due respect to all the technicians who worked in the film, I was definitely disappointed to watch an actor par excellence, whom I look up to, say dialogues to a woman that were not just derogatory but most saddening. Now many would say cinema reflects society but the line to draw is whether to glorify it or not. When a hero says such dialogues, it’s obviously glorified.”

Kasaba was at the eye of a storm when it got released last year. Mammootty along with the movie’s makers were issued notice by the Women’s Commission for some scenes and dialogues that were alleged as portraying women in a poor light. The movie which marked the directorial debut of Nithin Renji Panicker was severely panned by the critics for its profanity and vulgarity.

Parvathy’s criticism of the movie and its misogyny is now the hot topic of discussion in social media forums.

Rajinikanth looks terrific and all intense in this latest poster. His son-in-law actor Dhanush released the poster through his official social media handle. Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films is producing this movie in association with Lyca Productions.

Kaala is a gangster flick based in the Mumbai underworld. The movie marks his reunion with director Pa Ranjith after Kabali, which was released last year. Unlike Kabali, Kaala promsies to be a proper gangster flick. It is about a guy from Tamil Nadu who runs away in his childhood to Mumbai to become a powerful don living in the slums. Rajinikanth plays Kaala, a don who heads the Tamil community in Dharavi.

The movie has a strong supporting cast which includes several noted North Indian actors in the cast. Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead, but she is not paired opposite Rajinikanth. Multiple national award winner Nana Patekar is playing a prominent role in the film. Jackie Shroff, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Sayaji Shinde, Sakshi Agarwal, Samuthirakani, Sukanya, Ramesh Thilak and Sampath Raj are also part of the supporting cast.

Most of the technical crew of Pa Ranjith’s Kabali have been retained for Kaala as well. Only Sreekar Prasad, the veteran editor has replaced Praveen KL to handle the cuts. Pa Ranjith’s regular Santhosh Narayanan is in charge of the music department.

The makers are planning to dub and release the movie in Hindi and Telugu as well. Kaala is scheduled to release on April 14 next year.

It will give a sneak-peak to the much talked about young and fit look that Mohanlal has been working on for a month now. Fans as well as the common audience are highly excited to see Mohanlal in a new look. His ‘young and vibrant’ will be unveiled the next day, on December 13.
