They have produced films like Kammatipadam and Lord Livingstone besides distributing movies like Baahubali, Thoongavanam, The Jungle Book etc. With Mersal they will be looking forward to reap huge profits from the Kerala box office. Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan’s new found love for real life characters

Realism is something that is synonymous to Malayalam movies. Malayalam film industry is renowned for its movies that explored the rooted-to-realism themes and ones that are easily relatable to the commoners. Authentic portrayal of human emotions and their internal conflicts has always been the hallmark of Malayalam movies.

Even today, when other industries are investing hundreds of crores on spectacle heavy masala films, Malayalam movies focus on the quality of the subject. Naturally, the actors here are also open to doing realistic films through which they can showcase their acting skills. Dulquer Salmaan and Nivin Pauly, the poster boys of new-gen Malayalam movies, are a perfect example for this. Inspite of being such big commercial stars, they have never shied away from doing experimental stuff.

Both these actors currently have multiple projects in their bags. A casual glance at their list of upcoming movies, and one can notice a very interesting thing – their love for real life characters. While Dulquer has commited to play the notorious criminal Sukumara Kurup and legendary actor Gemini Ganesan, Nivin Pauly will be seen as the rebellious highwayman Kayamkulam Kochunni and freedom fighter/thespian NN Pillai in his upcoming movies.

Dulquer Salmaan is making his Telugu debut with Nag Ashwin’s Mahanati, a biopic on late actress Savitri. Dulquer is playing Gemini Ganesan, the legendary actor who was briefly married to Savitri. It is a highly challenging role and will be interesting to see how Dulquer enacts it. He has maintained that he will not be mimicking Gemini Ganesan but play the role in his own style. To look the part, Dulquer had even shaved his moustache to suit the 70s style.

In his upcoming movie with Srinath Rajendran, Dulquer plays the notorious criminal Sukumara Kurup.
He is accused of murdering Chacko, who bore a resemblance with him, to fake his own death and claim an insurance amount of Rs 8 lakhs. Sukumara Kurup is supposed to have fled abroad after the incident and has been absconding for over thirty years now. The Chacko murder case is one of the long standing cases in Kerala’s judicial history. Though there has been movies based on this incident before, Dulquer Salmaan’s portrayal of Sukumara Kurup is something exciting to watch out for.

On the other hand, Nivin Pauly also has two such films in the pipeline. He has already started shooting for Kayamkulam Kochunni, directed by Rosshan Andrewss. Nivin plays the legendary Kochunni, who is popularly known as India’s Robinhood. The actor is taking extra efforts for this movie as he is training in Kalaripayattu and horse riding. It is one of Nivin’s biggest projects till date and the actor is putting his heart and soul for it.

Recently, on Nivin’s birthday, it was announced that the actor would be teaming up with Rajeev Ravi for a biopic on NN Pillai, freedom figther and a legendary drama artist. The movie will showcase his life as a young soldier alongside Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose in the Indian National Army (INA) and his days as a drama artist. NN Pillai has had a very eventful life and Nivin has got a herculean task playing him.

So in the next few months, the Malayali audience will get to see Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan rock the screens as Kayamkulam Kochunni, Gemini Ganesan, NN Pillai and Sukumara Kurup. Exciting times ahead!

Ansuree replaces Mamta Mohandas in Jayaram’s Daivame Kaithozham K Kumarakanam

Salim Kumar’s upcoming directorial Jayaram has already gone on floors. The movie unlike Salim Kumar’s previous films is a fun filled family entertainer. Interestingly titled as Daivame Kaithozham K. Kumarakanam, the movie was supposed to have Mamta Mohandas as the female lead.

However, the actress has now opted out due to some unknown reasons. Promising young actress Anusree has been roped in to replace Mamta. She is also playing one of the female leads in Pranav Mohanlal’s Aadhi. This is her first film with Jayaram and it will be interesting to see their on-screen chemistry. Sreenivasan, Salim Kumar and Nedumudi Venu are also playing substantial roles in the movie.

This is Salim Kumar’s third directorial after the critically acclaimed Compartment and Karutha Joothan. Salim Kumar’s story for the latter, which discussed about the Jewish history of Kerala, won him a Kerala State Award last year.

Daivame Kaithozham K. Kumarakanam with Jayaram will be his first attempt in making a mainstream commercial film as both his previous films were offbeat ones. This upcoming movie is being jointly produced by Alwin Antony of Ananya Films and Dr Zachariah Thomas of United Global Media (UGM) Entertainment.

“All these allegations against Prithviraj are false and brutal”, says his My Story co-star Parvathy

Prithviraj’s My Story has become the talk of M town after its director Roshni Dinaker sparked off a controversy. She alleged that Prithviraj was unwilling to allot dates for the final schedule as he has committed for several other projects. Roshni, a costume designer-turned-filmmaker, approached the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce to resolve the issue.

Roshni alleged that the movie’s shoot has been delayed for over an year now as Prithviraj had no dates to allot from his busy schedule. In an interview to TOI, she said that Prithviraj was unwilling to talk to them unless he was paid a sum of Rs 1 crores. All this while the normally outspoken actor has maintained a dignified silence.

However, his co-star Parvathy has rubbished all the allegations made by Roshni against Prithviraj. In an interaction with Sify, Parvathy is quoted saying, “These allegations are completely false and we can prove that. This is brutal. Prithvi has maintained a dignified silence. But I believe bullying in any form is wrong. If I speak up against injustices to women, why shouldn’t I speak up for a man who has been wronged.”

Contrary to the director’s statements, Parvathy asserts that at no point did any of the stars say they couldn’t shoot further. She says, “We were constantly in touch with the My Story team. There was never a solid confirmation of dates from them. All of us have to be given a minimum notice before shooting starts. It is impossible to believe Prithvi refused dates. These are unfair allegations

Writer Shankar Ramakrishnan, actors Maniyanpilla Raju and Nandu have also strongly backed Prithviraj in this issue. After the meeting with KFCC, it was sorted out that Prithviraj would resume shooting for My Story on October 18. He will be shooting briefly for the movie before joining the sets of Anjali Menon’s upcoming movie. The final schedule of My Story is planned for January next year.

Lava Kusha: A fun film that is worth a watch!

Lava Kusha starring Neeraj Madhav and Aju Varghese in major roles has hit screens today. Neeraj debuts as a scriptwriter with this film, which falls under the genre of a spy-comedy. Nee Ko Njaa Chaa fame Gireesh Mano has directed this movie. Let’s see how Lava Kusha has turned out to be.

Two guys, who never call each other by their names, casually meet up at a bar in Chennai and hit it off over a couple of pegs. They decide to take their friendship to the next level. On their journey back home they come across another person and meeting him throws their lives into a topsy-turvy. They are forced to encounter a series of problems; how they overcome these issues forms the rest of the plot.

Neeraj Madhav and Aju Varghese have dispayed their fun act really well. Their spot on timing and brilliant on-screen chemistry is the USP of this movie. The duo’s performance helps in making Lava Kusha an entertaining watch. The ever dependable Biju Menon, as always, has performed his part superbly. Deepti Sati is also there in a crucial role. Felt that her dubbing could have been a lot better. Director Major Ravi and Vijay Babu are also part of the supporting cast.

Neeraj Madhav as a writer has impressed with how he has handled the humour portions. Some sequences looked a bit dragged. Technically, Lava Kusha is okayish with fine cinematography and decent music. Editing could have been more tight which would have given a more compact output.

Overall, the movie stays true to the makers’ claims and gives wat is expected of a comedy entertainer. Watch Lava Kusha for Aju Varghese-Neeraj Madhav duo’s fun filled perfomances.
