Tharangam Review: An unique attempt with a lot of fresh elements

Tovino Thomas’ latest outing Tharangam is a crime-comedy with some interesting fantasy elements in it. Actor Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films is making their entry to Mollywood with this movie. With some impressive promos and songs, Tharangam managed to grab the audience attention before it’s release. Read further to know more about how the movie has turned out to be:

The core plot of Tharangam is centred around two policemen- Padmanabhan (Tovino Thomas) and Joy (Balu Varghese). These two naïve policemen take part in an unauthorized mission, upon the instruction of their superior, to track down a gang of smugglers. Unfortunately, a police officer gets killed which results in the suspension of Pappan and Joy from the force. Rest of the story evolves as they get involved in a series of events which finally lands them in a chaotic culmination.

As a director, debutant Dominic Arun has managed to stamp an uniqueness throughout the film. After a very interesting first half, the movie loses pace in the latter and hence has an inconsistent nature. The usage of dark comedy and fantasy elements are commendable. The movie has a whole lot of characters who are connected to each other in some way or the other.

Dominic and his co-writer Anil Narayanan have done a good job with the screenplay but one clearly feels the lack of clarity in the proceedings. The series of events are laced in such a way that it demands the viewers attention and ends up as an engaging watch through most part of its run time. In a recent interview with us, the director had said that he was inspired from Priyadarshan and Siddique-Lal movies and we can clearly see that in the way certain sequences are staged in Tharangam.

Performance wise Tovino Thomas, Balu Varghese and the two female leads-Santhy Balachandran & Neha Iyer-have played their parts well. Tovino Thomas once again brings his comic side with a charming performance. Neha Iyer was superb as the bold and commanding Omana Varghese; special mention to the dubbing artist also. The dusky beauty Santhy had very few scenes to show her acting skills, but she managed to justify her casting even with the limited screen time. Tharangam boasts of an elaborate supporting cast which includes actors like Manoj K Jayan, Dileesh Pothan, Saiju Kurup, Vijayaraghavan, Shammy Thilakan, Sijoy Varghese and a host of other newcomers.

Most of the technicians in Tharangam are youngsters and that freshness is there to be seen. Deepak D Menon’s cinematography and the colour patterns was highly impressive, so was Ashwin Renju’s funky music.

With an unique style of treatment and good performances, Tharangam is a commendable effort coming from a team of youngsters.

Tharangam will be an unique film with a lot of surprise elements

Tovino Thomas’ Tharangam is all set to hit screens from this Friday (September 29). The movie is much awaited by the audience thanks to the impressive songs and trailer. Another major attraction of Tharangam is the involvement of Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films. It is the first Malayalam movie to be produced by this popular banner.

In a recent interview to Onlookers Media, director Dominic Arun revealed that the movie will have a lot of freshness along with some surprise elements. It is a crime-comedy centred around two policemen, Padmanabhan and Joy. They both get suspended from the force for being part of an unauthorized mission that leads to the death of a police officer. The movie has several other charcaters who are somehow connected to these two protagonists. It is a full on fun entertainer with a lot of interesting turnarounds.

Tharangam also has a tinge of fanatsy, which the makers have tried to present in a very unqiue way. Director Dominic Arun has jointly scripted it along with Anil Narayanan. The movie stars Manoj K Jayan, Dileesh Pothan, Vijayaraghavan, Alencier Ley, Saiju Kurup, Sijoy Varghese and Shammi Thilakan in supporting roles. Around 30 newcomers are also part of the cast. It was a conscious decision by the makers to cast freshers as they didn’t want to lose the unpredictable nature of the movie.

Tharangam will be a fun entertainer right from the word go till the very end. There will be a lot of chaos in the movie that will remind one of yesteryear classics like Ramji Rao Speaking and Mazha Peyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu. They have tried to merge that into today’s filmmaking style and the audience’s sensibilities. Hope the movie fulfills the audience expectations and turn out to be a successful one.

Kerala Cafe, 5 Sundarikal and now Solo; Yet another anthology film from Mollywood!

Malayalam movies are known for their experimental themes and the realistic approach in story telling. A wide variety of themes have been explored in Mollywood. But an anthology film is something that has not been attempted here. Kerala Cafe and 5 Sundarikal are probably the only two films that falls under this category. Now, we have another such film in Dulquer Salmaan’s Solo.

Solo is basically an anthology inspired from Lord Shiva. Shiva is known for his extreme emotions and this movie has on love and rage as its premise. Dulquer Salmaan plays four different characters – Rudra, Siva, Trilok and Shekar – in the movie. Each of these characters represent Lord Shiva. Also, these four characters are sketched from the four elements – earth, wind, fire and water.

The four different protagonists played by Dulquer are connected to these elements. Bejoy Nambiar, who has also scripted the film, has woven these elements into four stories. It is a mix-genre attempt and the movie has a very unique treatment.

Since Solo is being made as a bilingual, the movie has a plethora of actors from several industries. Dino Morea, Ann Augustine, Arti Venkatesh, Sai Dhansika, Deepti Sati, Sai Tamhankar, Sruthi Hariharan, Govind Menon, Sheelu Abraham, Manoj K Jayan, Prakash Belawadi, Bengali filmmaker Quashiq Mukherjee, Sathish, Soubin Shahir and many others are part of the cast.

Music for the movie is composed by many composers which includes several leading bands and independent musicians. Girish Gangadharan, Sejal Shah and Madhu Neelakandan have cranked the camera for the movie.

Abraham Mathew has produced the Malayalam version under the banner of Abaam Movies. Tamil version is jointly funded by Anil Jain and Bejoy Nambiar. The movie is all set to hit screens on October 5.

Kamal Haasan wishes to see Vijay act in non-commercial films also

Kamal Haasan is widely regarded as the ‘Sakalakala Vallavan’ of cinema. He is an actor, director, producer, screenwriter, lyricist and choreographer. His knowledge in filmmaking is second to none and has always been known for his hunger to try out fresh and unexplored stuff. And as we all know, he is quite outspoken about his views on filmmaking.

Recently, when asked what his favorite Vijay film is, Haasan politely advised Vijay on what type of films to act in. He is quoted saying,

“I have seen many Vijay movies. I like Rajinikanth’s Mullum Malarum, I am not sure if Rajini fans would like that film, but that is my favourite Rajini film. I want Vijay to act in movies like Mullum Malarum. I have watched several Vijay films and there is no doubt he has been successful, but I feel he should also act in such movies. It is my small selfish wish that I have as a cinema fan. I wish to see every successful actor work in a good film. We see Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan doing that, so I also want Vijay to do the same. I did commercial films like Sakalakala Vallavan, and in the same year, I had Moondram Pirai’s release. So I think even Vijay could do that. I know him personally, and he is capable of doing that.”

Kamal Haasan’s advise is very relevant as most of Vijay’s films in the past decade or so has followed a similar commercial pattern. Although, he has been highly successful doing such films we wish to see the actor doing a variety of roles.

Vijay is currently awaiting the release of Mersal, in which he is playing a triple role. This is his first such attempt in his two decade long career and fans are more than excited to see his performance. This Atlee directorial is scheduled to hit screens on Diwali day, October 18. After Mersal’s release, Vijay will be teaming up with ace filmmaker AR Murugadoss once again. The director had recently assured that he will be showing an unseen side of Vijay in his next film. Exciting times ahead for the fans!

Foreign stunt choreographer for Pranav Mohanlal’s Aadhi

The shoot for Pranav Mohanlal’s much awaited Aadhi is currently progressing in Hyderabad. This Jeethu Joseph directorial is tipped to be an action packed revenge thriller. Pranav plays Aadhi, an aspiring musician in the movie. He is a typical urban youth who is into music and dance. At a particular point life takes a turn and the rest of the events form the plot.

Pranav will doing some stylish stunts in the film. He has been training in Parkour to perform the stunts in Aadhi. Parkour is a form of acrobatic physical training that involves crossing obstacles by running, climbing, jumping, rolling and swinging. Parkour techniques have been featured in action scenes in many Hollywood movies like Casino Royale, Bourne Ultimatum, District 13 and Prince of Persia.

Record YouTube views for this song from Mammootty’s film!

The song ‘Entammeda Jimikki Kammal’ from Mohanlal’s Velipadinte Pusthakam recently took the internet by storm. This peppy number composed by Shaan Rahman had numerous verisons with some becoming more popular than the original one. The official song from the movie has fetched a whopping 23 million views in YouTube.

But, Jimikki Kammal is not the most Malayalam song in YouTube. The song ‘I Love You Mummy’ from Mammootty starrer Bhaskar The Rascal tops the list of most viewed Malayalam songs with over 3 million views.

This colourful song featuring Nayanthara and Baby Anikha captures the fun moments of a mother and her daughter. Rafeeq Ahmed has penned the lyrics and Deepak Dev has composed the song. Shwetha Mohan and Deepak Dev’s daugther Devika have lent their voice to this beautiful track.

It must be noted that the video of ‘I Love You Mummy’ was uploaded two years back while ‘Entammeda Jimikki Kammal’ was uploaded just a couple of weeks back. So there is high probablity for Jimikki Kammal to topple the view count and emerge as the most viewed Malayalam song in YouTube.

Here’s what Dulquer Salmaan has to say about fan fights!

In India, cinema is closely knit with the lives of the commoners. Most of our movies are a reflection of our culture and society. Naturally, the viewers have an affinity towards the actors who play the larger than life characters on-screen. The affinity on most occasions become fandom and they end up ‘hero worshipping’.

This trend has been prevalent in India from the black and white times itslef. But these days hero worshipping has gone to the next level of personal attacks and degrading others’ films. In this age of social medias, fan fights are a very common sight.

A casual banter or healthy arguments have always been welcomed. But those are a rarity these days as these ‘so called’ fans are busily involved in abusing and bullying. Several actors have come out requesting fans not to indulge in such activites.

But, young star Dulquer Salmaan has a different perspective on this issue. In a recent interview to TOI, he shared his thoughts on fan fights. He is quoted saying,

“Do you think Vijay or Ajith have ever had a fight? I think they are just happy, living their lives or meeting up for dinner, etc. I think fan base is like supporting a sports team. I like CSK and so, I support them, and you might like RCB and therefore, you root for them. In India, before cricket became a craze, we only had movies. So, if fans are having fun, it’s great. I don’t think any of the actors have a problem with each other. How can they compare two big films by two big stars? They might have been conceived in different times, dealing with different subjects, etc. So, social wars are a lot like supporting a sports team.”

On the work front, Dulquer’s last release Parava, in which he played an extended cameo, is getting excellent response from the audience. He is currently awaiting the release of Solo, his much anticipated Tamil-Malayalam bilingual directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Besides that he is also simultaneously working in his debut Hindi (Karwaan) and Telugu (Mahanati) films.
