Mohanlal’s Villain has been in the making for sometime now and is finally slated to hit screens next month. It is one of the most awaited movies of the season and there are quite a few reasons for that. Recently, director B Unnikrishnan revealed that Vishal was not the initial choice to play this pivotal character. During the scripting stages, the director had Prithviraj in mind as he wanted a clash of the equals. He wanted Prithvi to be pitted opposite Mohanlal. However, the actor was busy with shooting abroad and had other prior commitments. Later, Prithvi himself suggested the director to find a suitable replacement.

Apparently, Vishal committed to act in Villain after squeezing in dates from his busy schedule. He pushed the shoot of couple of his films to be a part of Villain as he was very much impressed by his character and B Unnikrishnan’s script.

Popular Malayali actors like Sidharth Bharathan, Vineeth Kumar, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dhyan Sreenivasan (the latter two have announced their films) are all into filmmaking. Recently, we saw actors like Aju Varghese and Mythili assisting other filmmakers. Inspite of being established actors, they have an hunger for filmmaking and are interested in exploring the craft behind it.

Recently, Mollywood’s young sensation Dulquer Salmaan was asked whether he too was interested in direction. Apparently, Dulquer also has a dream to turn a director and make some quality films. He admitted that he is bad at scripting but has some stories in his head.

Dulquer is quoted saying, “As for writing, I am very bad at putting pen to paper. But I have broad storylines in my head. But before anything else, it’s direction that I want to do. I have always been fascinated with direction. But then, I didn’t want to make it look like I am running away from acting or the comparisons to my father. So, I decided to face the fear head on and became an actor.”

Dulquer is easily the most popular new-gen Malayali actor in South India. He is also broadening his wings to Bollywood this year with his debut Hindi film Karwaan. Premam fame Sai Pallavi to play the female lead in Dhanush’s next

Kollywood star Dhanush is gearing up to start shooting the sequel of his 2015 film Maari. Balaji Mohan, who helmed the first part, will be directing the sequel as well. Promising young Malayali actor Tovino Thomas will be playing the villain in the movie. Latest addition to the cast is Premam fame Sai Pallavi, who has been roped in to play the female lead.

Maari, the first part, had Kajal Aggarwal as the female lead. During the initial talks itself, the makers had revealed that Kajal will not be a part of the sequel. Sai Pallavi’s casting came as a pleasant surprise. Though the actress is yet to make an appearance in Tamil cinema, she enjoys a huge fan following among the Tamil audience.

The sensational success of Nivin Pauly’s Premam made Sai Pallavi an overnight star. Incidentally, Dhanush has now acted with all the three heroines of Premam. Anupama Parameswaran played one the female leads in Kodi while Madonna Sebastian did a brief cameo in Power Pandi. It will be interesting to see the chemistry between Dhanush and the vibrant Sai Pallavi. Maari 2 will be her second film in Tamil after director AL Vijay’s Karu.

Maari, released in 2015, was an action-comedy drama had Dhanush playing the titular role. Despite releasing amid huge hype, the movie could emerge only as a mediocre success. Despite being an average grosser, Maari is having a sequel thanks to the hugely popularity of the character and Anirudh’s music, which was a rage among the youngsters. Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films is producing the movie.

Sherlock Toms: A fun entertainer from Shafi and team

Sherlock Toms: A fun entertainer from Shafi and team

After the successful Rakshadhikari Baiju, Biju Menon is back with another entertainer – Sherlock Toms. The movie is directed by hit maker Shafi. Its story is penned by Najeem Koya and the dialogues are written by Shafi. Sachi, Shafi and Najeem Koya have jointly written the screenplay for this movie, produced by Global United Media. Shafi has always been knwon for his comedy entertainers and Sherlock Toms also promised to be one. Let’s see how the movie has turned out to be.

The movie tells the story of Thomas, someone who is inspired by the legendary fictional character Sherlock Holmes. He wishes to become an IPS officer but manages to get into IRS (Indian Revenue Service). Thomas leads a not-so-happy marital life. The core plot kicks off with a case that affects his whole life.

Biju Menon has yet again given an effortless performance. His character Thomas does not prove to be a challenge for this wonderfully talented actor. Srinda and Miya George were also good but the latter only had a very short screen time. Harish Kanaran, Salim Kumar and director Rafi evoke a few genuine laughs. Though the humour does not match up to some of Shafi’s previous films, Sherlock Toms still has some good fun moments. The movie has equal doses of emotions, drama, humour and thrill.

Technically, Sherlock Toms have nothing much to boast about. Bijibal’s songs and Rahul Raj’s background score were mediocre. Overall, Sherlock Toms is a good entertaining watch. Biju Menon’s following among the families will clearly help the movie in doing some great business
