Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela Review : An entertaining watch for families

Nivin Pauly’s Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela has been in the making for sometime now. The movie, which makes the directorial debut of Althaf Salim has finally hit screens today as. The movie is aimed mainly at the families visiting theatres during this Onam season. Let’s see how the movie has actually turned out to be.

Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela’s story is primarily about the Chacko family. Veteran actors Lal and Shanthi Krishna play a middle aged couple in the movie. They have three children – Kurian (Nivin Pauly), Mary (Srinda Arhaan) and Sarah (Ahaana Krishna). Siju Wilson plays Srinda’s husband and newbie Aishwarya Lekshmi plays Nivin’s pair.

The Chacko couple lead a happy life when an unexpected problem arises. They try to inform this to their kids. Kurian comes home from London hoping that his parents have fixed his marriage. But what awaits him is something serious. How the family stands united to face this situation is what is discussed in this movie.

One of the weakest links in the movie is clearly it’s writing. Althaf Salim and George Kora and have jointly scripted this movie. The emotions do not work out and the humour looks forced in. The movie has a host of characters but apart from Sheela Chacko’s character, all the others lacked depth and proper characterisation. The fact that Althaf has opted out for a feel-good shade when the story had a lot of scope for some emotional drama is quite strange. Despite that, families seem to enjoy this movie with Nivin Pauly’s goofy act winning him applause.

Coming to the perfomance side, veteran actress Shanthi Krishna has made a memorable comeback. With her act as a bold and strong mother, she stands tall as the backbone of this movie. Nivin Pauly’s performance reminds of his own roles in Oru Vadakkan Selfie and Premam (teenage age days). Lal, Ahaana Krishna, Srinda, Siju Wilson and all the other supporting actors justified their casting.

Technically, Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela is a quality product. Mukesh Muraleedharan’s aesthetic frames has given a rich feel to the movie. Composer Justin Varghese has also had an impressive debut.

Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela has it’s share of flaws which cannot be completely overlooked. Despite that, families will enjoy the movie for it’s fun and entertaining factor.

After years of speculations, Mohanlal and director Lal Jose finally joined hands this year for Velipadinte Pusthakam. Velipadinte Pusthakam starts off with the story of Bullet Vishwan, played by Anoop Menon. From there it shifts straight to a campus backdrop where we are introduced to two groups of students who are at loggerheads. Mohanlal’s character, professor Michael Idicula lands at the scene with the suspension of the vice-principal. The actual core plot takes off with his arrival, which brings a change in the mindset of the students.

A movie’s base in always it’s script and here, scenarist Benny P Nayarambalam has failed to deliver a quality product. Velipadinte Pusthakam stands on a shaky base which which keeps pulling down the movie despite the presence of stalwarts like Mohanlal and Lal Jose at the helm of things. The lack of depth in the screenplay gives the feel of a half baked product. Lal Jose has managed to get on board some fine young talents but most of their characters do not have any scope for performance.

Mohanlal, as always, has done his part well and stands tall among the host of other supporting actors. While seasoned actors like Anoop Menon Siddique and Chemban Vinod were impressive, youngsters like Anna Reshma, ‘Appani Ravi’ Sarath Kumar and Arun Kurian looked out of place.

In the technical side, Vishnu Sarma’s cinematography and Shaan Rahman’s music were perfectly in sync. Editing could have much better with less usage of slow-motion shots during the action sequences.

Overall, Velipadinte Pusthakam could not live up to the expectations that a Mohanlal-Lal Jose combo evoked. It has come out as a totally disappointing experience for the common audience.
