Release postponed; Here’s the list of movies slated to hit screens this Onam season

We are hardly a week away from the official commencement of the much anticipated Onam race. This year, almost all the major stars are having releases. Mohanlal Mammootty, Prithviraj, Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan were expected to lock horns this season. However, there has been a change in the final schedule as the release of a couple of movies has been pushed.

Dulquer Salmaan’s Parava and Nivin Pauly-Aju Varghese duo’s Lava Kusa are the two movies that have pulled out of the exciting Onam race. Parava, which marks the directorial debut of noted actor Soubin Shahir is said to have been rescheduled for September 14. Lava Kusa’s release date has not yet been confirmed. The movie’s official trailer will be released today.

So, this Onam, it will be battle between veterans and the youth stars. Mohanlal’s Velipadinte Pusthakam, Mammootty’s Pullikkaran Staraa, Prithviraj’s Adam Joan and Nivin Pauly’s Njandukalude Naatil Oridavela are the four movies that are confirmed as Onam releases.

All four movies come in with a baggage of expectations. Theatre owners, distributors and the general audience will be hoping that all four of them find success and earn some big bucks during this prosperous Onam season.

Mohanlal’s Odiyan is arguably one of the most exciting upcoming projects in South Indian cinema. The movie has an unique plot and theme, which has rarely been tried in Indian cinema. It is a fantasy film that will have a mix of action, romance and magical realism.

Odiyan went on floors recently in Varanasi. The team will be shooting here for a few weeks before moving to Palakkad where the art department is erecting sets resembling a village. Odiyan is being directed by renowned ad filmmaker VA Shrikumar Menon. National award winner Harikrishnan has scripted this movie.

An exciting update that we have got now is regarding the movie’s release date. If reports are to be believed, the makers are planning to release Odiyan on March 30, 2018. They are planning to release it on a huge scale as the biggest ever for a Malayalam movie.

The movie is primarily about Odividya, a black magic pratcie, and people who practice it, who are called Odiyan. There are a lot of stories and myths about Odiyans and their life in Kerala’s folklore. Mohanlal is playing the role of Odiyan Manikyan. In the movie, Mohanlal’s character goes through the age of 30 to 65 and will be seen in multiple looks. The movie happens in three different eras starting from the pre-electricty days in the 1950s to 2000.

Odiyan Manikyan is someone who is mastered in Odividya. He is a fabulous athelete who can take any shape, can crawl and also run at high speed. Peter Hein, who choreographed the amazing stunts in Pulimurugan, has been roped in to train Mohanlal for playing this challenging character of Odiyan Manikyan.

Odiyan also stars Manju Warrier and Prakash Raj in prominent roles. Shaji Kumar is wielding the camera and Sreekar Prasad will handle the edits. M Jayachandran is handling the music department. Art director Prashanth Madhav and his team is creating the set of a fictional village in Thenkurissi. Mohanlal’s own banner Aashirvad Cinemas is funding this big budget movie. Palakkad, Pollachi, Hyderabad and Varanasi have been finalized as the major locations.

We had earlier reported about Aju Varghese and Neeraj Madhav teaming up for a movie titled as Lava Kusha. Neeraj is debuting as a scenarist with this movie, directed by Gireesh Mano of Nee Ko Njaa Chaa fame.

Official teaser of the movie was released today afternoon through the movie’s official Facebook page.This interesting teaser featured Aju Varghese and Neeraj with a voice over from veteran Janardhanan. Biju Menon is also seen towards the end of the teaser.

Deepti Sati, noted for her perfomance in Lal Jose’s Nee-na is also playing a major role in the movie. Lava Kusha is a spy thriller comedy drama with Neeraj and Aju Varghese in the titular roles. Deepti Sati will be seen in an interesting character that has several shades to it. Her’s is not playing a typical Malayali girl but a bold and independent woman.

Lava Kusha promises to be an out and out comedy entertainer. Gopi Sunder is handling the music department while Pulimurugan editor Johnkutty is in charge of the cuts. Prakash Velayudhan is wielding the camera. The movie is being produced by Jaison Elamgulam.

Lava Kusha was initially scheduled to release for the upcoming Onam season but was recently postponed. An official announcement regarding the new release date is still awaited.

Tovino Thomas currently has a long list of projects lined up in his kitty. Latest to the list is a suspense thriller directed by debutant Anuraj Manohar, a former associate of Lijo Jose Pellissery. This yet to be titled movie is being scripted by Ratheesh Ravi, who has also written Mammootty’s upcoming movie Pullikkaran Staraa.

Tovino’s character in this upcoming movie is something he has not played before. He will be seen as a native youngster who has lived all his life in a remote village. He is someone who is attached to his native place, temple and their regional club activities. Certain circumstances land him in Kochi and the core plot evolves from there. The movie will have elements of suspense while also exploring the life stark contrast in the life in an urban area and a village.

The movie’s titled is expected to be announced on Onam day. E4 Experiments is producing this movie. They are planning to start shooting by February next year. Meanwhile, Tovino is busy shooting for the third schedule of Aashiq Abu’s Maayanadhi. He is also awaiting the release of Abiyude Kadha Anuvinteyum, a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual movie. This romantic entertainer directed by BR Vijayalakshmi is slated to hit screens by September end.

As we already know, promising actor Tovino Thomas is foraying into Kollywood this year with a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual movie. The Tamil version has been titled as Abhiyum Anuvum and Malayalam as Abhiyude Kadha Anuvinteyum. Noted cinematographer BR Vijayalakshmi has directed this romantic entertainer.

Pia Bajpai is paired opposite Tovino in this movie. The pretty actress is known for her perfomance in movies like Goa, Masters, Ko, Laal Rang etc. In a recent interview, Pia was all praise for her co-star Tovino Thomas. When asked about the specialities of their upcoming movie, she is quoted saying, “There have been a lot of romantic films in the past but this one will be different and gripping for sure. It’s an intense love story, a very hard hitting one. I play Tovino’s love interest. Though I’ve have worked in Malayalam films, this is my first venture with Tovino. He is a wonderful actor and very good looking, too.”

Apparently, this movie is based on a real life incident that occured in Latin America. Udayabanu Maheshwaran has penned the story and screenplay for this movie. Tovino has already shown his potential in playing tough roles with his performance in films like 7th Day, ABCD, Guppy and Style. Humour also comes naturally to him as we have seen in films like You Too Brutus and Godha. This will be his first attempt in playing a full length romantic character.

Shoot for Abiyum Anuvum has already been completed and it was shot extensively in various parts of Kerala and Chennai. Veteran actors Prabhu, Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Rohini are playing prominent roles. Dharan has handled the music department and Agilan has cranked the camera.

Vikram Mehra and BR Vijayalakshmi are jointly funding this movie under the banner of Yoodlee Films. Ace cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Santhosh Sivan is serving as an executive producer. The movie is slated to hit screens on September 22.

Asif Ali’s brother Askar Ali made his acting debut with Honey Bee 2.5, which was released on August 18. The movie is a first of its kind attempt in Malayalam cinema. Interestingly, the movie happens in the location of another movie- Honey Bee 2: Celebrations. Shyju Anthikad directed this movie which had Maheshinte Prathikaram fame Lijomol Jose as the female lead.

Honey Bee 2.5 was met with mixed reports from the critics. The movie also had very minimal promotions which has affected the box office returns. According to latest reports from our trade sources, Honey Bee 2.5 has just managed to gross 1.78 crores from it’s first week of theatrical run. In all probability, the movie will be removed this week itself as big ticket Onam releases are gearing up to hit screens from this Friday.

The core plot of Honey Bee 2.5 evolves in the location of Honey Bee 2. Artists acting in the latter will be seen in the background of this movie. Asif Ali, Bhavana, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese Lal, Suresh Krishna, Baburaj, Sreenivasan, Lena, Arya Rohit and many others who were part of the Honey Bee 2 are seen in the background of Honey Bee 2.5. These actors had to perform without any rehearsals and retakes. Live sync sound is also used in the Askar Ali starrer. Both the movies were filmed simultaneously.

Honey Bee 2.5 is about the events happening in a cinema set. It is an one of a kind attempt in Mollywood as the actors had to react spontaneously. Actor/filmmaker Lal has scripted and produced this movie.

Actor Nivin Pauly and his wife Rinna Joy were blessed with a baby girl on May 25. The newborn’s baptism ceremony was held last day in Kochi. The couple has named their little princess, Rose Treesa Nivin Pauly. Photos taken in the baptism ceremony has been going viral on social networking platforms. Actors Suraj Venjaramoodu and Kunchako Boban had also attended the ceremony.

Nivin-Rinna couple also have a 5 year old son Dhaveedh Pauly, born in 2012. It was Nivin himself who shared the arrival of his baby girl with all his followers through his official Facebook page. He had also gifted Mini Cooper S for his little angel, photos of which were shared in his Instagram account. Nivin and Rinna Joy were college mates at FISAT engineering college. They got married on 28 August 2010 at St. Dominic Church in Aluva, Ernakulam.

On the professional front, Nivin Pauly is waiting the release of Njandukalude Naatil Oridavela, which is also his second production venture after Action Hero Biju. The movie is all set to hit screens on August 31 as an Onam release. His first straight Tamil movie Richie, directed by debutant Gautham Ramachandran is also gearing up for release.

Nivin will soon be joining the sets of Rosshan Andrewss’ Kayamkulam Kochunni. This big budget movie is scheduled to go on floors by September end in Uduppi. Shyamaprasad’s Hey Jude and Geetu Mohandas’ Moothon are some of his other movies waiting in the pipeline.

E4 Experiment is the newly undertaken initiative by the famous banner E4 Entertainment. Their core objective is to promote young talents and introduce them to the world of movies. Their first venture is Lilli directed by debutant Prasobh Vijayan.

A host of newcomers are being introduced to film industry through Lilli. The movie’s cinematography is handled by debutant Sreeraj Raveendran. With Lilli, the fortunes of Sreeraj seemed to have changed as the youngster has now bagged a big ticket film in Kannada.

The movie, directed by Senna Hedge is produced by Kannda superstar Rakshit Shetty. CV Sarathy, one of the founders of E4 Experiment, was the one who introduced Sreeraj to Senna Hedge. Impressed by some of the youngster’s works, the director roped in Sreeraj for his Kannada movie.

Rakshit Shetty is popular for his films like Ulidavaru Kandanthe, Ricky and Kirik Party. Expectations are obviously on the higher side since he is producing Senna Hedge’s film under his banner.

E4 Experiment is making waves even before the release of their first movie. Common audience and industry insiders are now looking forward to more from this banner.

Ileana D’Cruz, after debuting in the South, has now established herself as one of the most sought after actresses in B Town. She is currently awaiting the release of Baadshao, a period film directed by Milan Luthria.

The Goan beauty is playing the role of a Maharani in this upcoming movie. She is paired opposite Ajay Devgn for the first time. The duo has some very intimate scenes in the film and the audience got to see a glimpse of it in the recently released song Rashke Qamar.

In a recent interview to TOI, Ileana opened up about her sizzling chemistry, which has been making waves in the internet. She said, “That was a concern I had and I hope our chemistry comes across. Like in Mubarakan, Arjun Kapoor and I had these conversational crutches to create that fun chemistry, which was absent in this film. So, I am overjoyed that people like our chemistry; I even messaged Ajay about it.”

She added, “It’s weird but I have never tried to create chemistry. We had to feed off each other for which you need a great co-star like him. He’s intense and his eyes speak a lot. Ajay and I got along from the start and I never felt intimidated by him. There were mutual trust and respect between us, which helps drop your guard down as actors.”

When quizzed whether she was uncomfortable in doing such scenes, she replied, “I have never done such scenes in my career, but I am not a prude who says no to kissing scenes or wearing certain type of clothes. I will do what makes sense to the script and the character.

The idea of dropping the jacket was mine. I never thought I’d come up with that. The story needed a moment of intimacy where she could show how much she trusted him and how much of herself she could give him. As soon as the shot was done, Ajay shielded me until someone came over with a jacket. It makes it so much easier to work with people who you can implicitly trust. It isn’t an offensive scene and it wasn’t planned. It came up last minute and worked.”

Baadshao is a multi-starrer which also stars Emraan Hashmi, Vidyut Jammwal, Esha Gupta and Sanjay Mishra in the lead roles. The film is a thriller set in the emergency era of the 1970s. It is all set to hit screens worldwide on September 1.

Rana Daggubati is now popular nationwide courtsey the humongous success of Baahuabli franchise. He is now one of the most sought after actors in the South. According to latest reports, Rana has been roped in to play the lead role in a mythological film Hiranyakashipu, directed by Gunasekhar.

Confirming Rana’s casting, a source is quoted saying to TOI, “There is perhaps no asura as evil as Hiranyakashipu in Indian mythology. He hates Lord Vishnu but much to his annoyance, his son Prahlada turns out to be the greatest devotee of Vishnu. And the director felt Rana was perfect for the role right from the outset. The pre-production activities have been going on for the last two months. The film is being planned on a massive scale and will be high on visual effects and graphics.”

The overwhelming response to the Baahubali series, both critically and commercially, proved that spectacle heavy masala filmmaking has a massive scope in Indian cinema. After the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, director Gunasekhar had met Rana Daggubati and narrated the story. The actor was highly impressed by the narrative and immediately accepted the offer.

It is reported that the director and his team have been working on the script for several months now. They have decided to give ample time to the pre-visualisation spending Rs 10 crore on it’s graphics alone. Inspired by the success of Baahuabli, the makers are investing a huge amount for production. They are roping in best available technicians from across the industries to make it on par with Hollywood standards. More details about this ambitious project are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
