Amal Neerad is not directing Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar

Reports about Mammootty teaming up with August Cinemas yet again after the success of The Great Father have been doing the rounds for some time now. These reports suggested that Mammootty will be playing the lead in the much talked about biopic on Kunjali Marakkar. Cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Amal Neerad was said to be helming the project.

However, Amal Neerad in a recent interview to TOI, has completely denied these reports. He is quoted saying, “It’s been doing the rounds for some time but I won’t be directing the film.” It must be remembered that Amal Neerad had expressed his desire to helm this movie in the past itslef. During that time, the makers could not take it forward due to budge constraints..

Noted scenarist/actor Shankar Ramakrishnan is scripting this period film. He has earlier penned films liks Urumi and Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla. He has also directed a light and sound show based on Kunjali Marakkar, for the department of Kerala tourism development and archeological survey of India.

Interestingly, Mammootty had lent his voice for Kunjali Marakkar in the show. Now there are also reports about scribe Shankar Ramakrishnan making his directorial debut with this movie.

Apparently, ace cinematographer Santhosh Sivan, who is also one of the founders of August Cinemas, has been approached to wield the camera. An official announcement of the project is expected to be made during the success celebration of The Great Father.

Amal Neerad, meanwhile is busy cranking the camera for Anwar Rasheed’s Trance starring Fahadh Fassil in the lead. He has also penned the story of Tovino Thomas starrer Mayaanadhi, which is being directed by Aashiq Abu.

Happy Wedding fame Omar Lulu’s latest release Chunkzz is fast moving towards a superhit. The movie has found most of its takers amongst the youngsters. Releasing on August 4, the movie opened to mediocre reviews from critics with many slamming the excessive usage of adult and misogynistic jokes. However, all that has not had any impact on the business side of the movie.

According to latest reports from our trade sources, Chunkzz has grossed Rs 8.60 crores from its 16 days theatrical run in the Kerala box office. This is a great opening considering the fact that most of the lead actors were youngsters and the negative reviews from the critics. Extensive social media promotions by the makers have worked really well for the movie.

Just like Happy Wedding, Chunkzz was also made on a very moderate budget. Omar Lulu’s second film is also certain to achieve the superhit status. Chunkzz stars Aanandam fame Vishak Nair, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi, Honey Rose, Mareena Michael, Dharmajan, Siddique and Lal among others The movie is a colurful fun filled entertainer revolving around a group of engineering students.

Three newcomers Sanoop Thykoodam, Joseph Vijeesh and Aneesh Hameed have scripted this movie. They have jointly written the screenplay and dialogues for Omar Lulu’s story. The movie is produced by Vyshak Rajan under his banner Vaishaka Movies.

Sunday Holiday, Asif Ali’s second outing with Bicycle Thieves director Jis Joy continues to good response from the audience. The movie, which released on July 14, opened to positive reports from almost all the centres. Critics gave it a feel good entertainer tag. Soon the families lapped up the movie.

The movie has successfully crossed its first month of theatrical run without many major setbacks. According to latest collection reports from our trade sources, the movie has managed to gross Rs 12.70 crores from the Kerala box office alone.

Thie is a good figure considering Asif Ali’s mixed run post the successful Anuraga Karikkin Vellam. Another great news is that the remake rights for the Tamil and Telugu versions of Sunday Holiday were sold within a week of its release. Sunday Holiday has already earned the ‘hit’ tag and is expected to continue its good run till the Onam releases grab the screens.

Sunday Holiday, scripted by director Jis Joy himself, has a two layered narrative. Aparna Balamurali plays Asif Ali’s pair in the movie. Alencier Ley Lopez, Sreenivasan, Asha Sharath, Pretham fame Shruthi Ramachandran, Siddique, KPAC Lalitha, Sudheer Karamana, Nirmal Palazhy, director Lal Jose, Dharmajan Bolgatty and Bhagath Manuel have essayed other supporting roles.

Action Hero Biju fame Alex J Pulickal has cranked the camera and Ratheesh Raj has edited the movie. Music department is handled by Deepak Dev. The movie is produced by Sheen Helen under the banner of Maqtro Pictures.

This high profile project is being funded by his son Ram Charan under the banner Konidela Production Company. Mohanlal’s Velipadinte Pusthakam, directed by Lal Jose is getting ready to release during this coming Onam season. The recently released single ‘Jimikki Kammal’ has become a big sensation among the audience. This peppy number composed by Shaan Rahman has become an instant favourite, particularly amongst the kids and youngsters. Vineeth Sreenivasan and Renjith Unni have lent their voice to this song penned by Anil Panachooran.

The official video of this song was released few days and within a few hours it started trending on social medias. The videos has now fetched over 20 lakh views in YouTube and still counting.

It was only recently that Prabhas started shooting for Saaho, his first film out of the Baahubali series in five long years. This ambitious movie directed by Sujeeth is one of the most anticipated films in recent times. Prabhas is now popular nation wide courtesy the humongous success of Baahubali. To cash in on his huge popularity, the makers are releasing the film in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages.

International stuntman Kenny Bates, famous for his works in Hollywood films like Die Hard and Transformers has been roped in to choreograph the high octane stunts in Saaho.

The film will be shot extensively in Hyderabad, Romania, Abu Dhabi and some other locations across Europe. Saaho is expected to hit screens by the end of next year.
