Kerala Box Office : Take Off Collection Report 21 Days

Renowned editor Mahesh Narayanan’s directorial debut Take Off has entered it’s third week of theatrical run. The movie starring Parvathy Menon, Kunchako Boban, Fahadh Faasil and Asif Ali in major roles, was opened to extra ordinary reports right from the first day of it’s release.

According to latest reports from trade sources, Take Off has grossed Rs 12.5 crores from it’s 21 days theatrical run. The figures have started to come down gradually as the big Vishu releases like The Great Father, 1971 Beyond Borders and Puthan Panam have had a negative impact on Take Off’s screen count in Kerala.

With the release of Nivin Pauly’s Sakhavu today, it will be hard for Take Off to get enough screens in the coming days. The collection reports of Take Off do not actually reflect the great critical response it has been getting ever since it’s release on March 24. The movie was released at a risk of Rs 5 crores and hence a big final gross is necessary for the movie to meet the safe zone.

Take Off was in the news prior to the release itself as it was made as a tribute to late filmmaker Rajesh Pillai. The movie was funded by Anto Joseph and Shebin Becker in association with Rajesh Pillai Films. Mekha Rajesh Pillai is the executive producer of the movie.

The movie, written jointly by PV Shaji Kumar and Mahesh Narayanan, is inspired from real life incidents that happened in 2014 when a group of Malayali nurses were held captive in the Tikrit region in Iraq during the ISIS attacks.

“It’s not my opinion alone, it’s the voice of the Indian audience”, AR Murugadoss hits back at Priyadarshan

It seems like the controversies and talks surrounding the National Film Awards will not settle down soon. The jury headed by filmmaker Priyadarshan have been receiving a lot of criticism for some of their choices including the best actor award, which to everyone’s surprise went to Akshay Kumar for Rustom.

Tamil filmmaker AR Murugadoss has once again hit back at the jury after Priyadarshan took a dig at him in a recent interview. It all started after Murugadoss alleged the jury was biased. After the awards were announced, the director in his Twitter space wrote,

#NationalAwards Can clearly witness the influence & partiality of people in jury, it’s biased

The director’s views were supported by many and soon his tweet went viral. In a recent interview, Priyadarshan was asked about his opinion on Murugadoss’ tweet, the veteran filmmaker took a dig at Murugadoss. He said that Murugadoss had not taken any commendable movie apart from helming a few action films. In another interview, he said that people who allege that the jury was biased would not have even seen those movies that won the awards.

Priyadarshan is quoted saying, “One thing I noticed was that people who are criticising the awards have never seen the films that won the awards. Regional films sweeped the awards and Marathi and Bengali cinema dominated. Director AR Murugadoss commented that the jury was biased and I don’t think he has seen any film that had won an award. How can he make such a comment without viewing these movies?

Irked by Priyadarshan’s response, Murugadoss has once again hit back with a tweet that reads,

#NationalAwards #Biased
Mr. jury, It’s nt only my opinion it’s the voice of whole Indian audience, better nt to argue & dig out the truth

Murugadoss, apart from being a successful filmmaker in Tamil has also made a mark in Bollywood with movies like Ghajini, Holiday and Akira. Some of the jury’s choices this year were met with severe criticism. Many alleged that Akshay Kumar’s proximity with Priyadarshan helped him in bagging the prestigious best actor award. It is worth a mention that the two have worked together in several movies like Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiya and Garam Masala.

Sakhavu Review : Journey through a real comrade’s life

Sakhavu Review : Journey through a real comrade’s life

The word Sakhavu (comrade) instills a sense of pride and zeal in every Malayali. The communist party has a glorious legacy that no other political party in Kerala can boast of. Thanks to that legacy, the party has a heroic image among the Keralites. Several movies have been made in Malayalam cinema to cash in on this heroic image that the party enjoys. Latest addition to that list is Nivin Pauly’s Sakhavu. The actor is playing a dual role as Krishnakumar and Krishnan.

Krishnakumar is a representative of the new generation politician, who has no sort of compassion to anyone. He is self-centered and never minds to use his party’s name to get things done. Upon instructions from his party seniors, Krishnakumar visits a hospital to donate blood to a patient, who is also a comrade, Krishnan. Rest of the plot shows Krishnakumar learning more about comrade Krishnan, through his friends and family.

Despite having a string of blockbusters in his kitty, Nivin Pauly was often criticised for doing roles within his comfortable zone. Sakhavu is Nivin’s befitting reply to all the naysayers. Krishnakumar was a role tailor-made for him but comrade Krishnan showcased an unseen side of the actor. He has played that particular role with a lot of maturity. Krishnakumar and Krishnan are two extremes and Nivin Pauly has given a flawless performance.

Another commendable performance in the movie was by Althaf, who played Nivin Pauly’s sidekick. With his humour, body language and peculiar voice, Althaf entertained the audience. The female leads, Aishwarya Rajesh and Aparna Gopinath also essayed their roles well. It was a very wise decision by the makers to use a dubbing artist for Gayathri Suresh. Other supporting actors like Sreenivasan and Baiju were also good with their performances.

Sidhartha Siva has carved a niche for himself in the industry with some ‘small’ movies. Sakhavu is his first attempt in a clean entertainer that has equal doses of all commercial ingredients. He has come out in flying colours in dishing out a screenplay that has enough elements to please audience of all age groups.

The movie starts off with a revolutionary song composed by Prashanth Pillai. And from there, he does not let go off that zeal and carries it successfully throughout the movie. His pulsating background score triggers goosebumps in quite a few scenes.

George C Williams’ cinematography is another major asset to this movie. He has not used the camera to showcase visual beauty but instead has chose to stay within the narrative. His realistic work draws the audience into the movie. Krishnan’s fight sequence with the flambeau is worth a mention.

The unwanted transitions and speed cuts in the edits could have been easily avoided. The movie has a lot of prominence to make up and the team have handled it neatly.

Sidhartha Siva has given a wonderful movie with a very relevant message about what exactly politics is and how a politician should be. In short, Sakhavu can be rated as one of the finest political movies ever made in Malayalam cinema.
