Dangal inching closer to 400 crore box office collections

Aamir Khan’s latest blockbuster movie Dangal has successfully entered its fifth week. The movie continues to register big numbers at the box office and set new records. It is already the highest grossing Hindi film in India.

The movie is now inching closer to cross Rs 400 crore mark in the domestic mark. It will be the first Bollywood movie to touch the mark. Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees have released this week and a bulk of thetares have been taken for the two biggies. So it will be difficult for Dangal to set the new record.

On Monday, the film’s domestic box office collection stood at Rs 381.92 crore, after adding Rs 85 lakh to its previous total of Rs 381.07 crore. Since its release on December 23, Dangal has not had to face any serious competition, with all other releases damping out at the box office. From this week, Dangal’s collections have begun to slow down, as is generally expected after a long run.

In the past month, Dangal has set several box office records: it crossed the coveted Rs 100-crore mark in its first weekend itself. The movie overhauled PK’s lifetime collections to become the highest grossing film ever in Hindi cinema.

Dangal is an inspiring sports drama directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The movie is based on the real life story of a wrestler from Haryana, Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his two daughters- Geetha Kumari Phogat and Babita Kumari Phogat to world class wrestlers.

Aamir Khan portrayed the character of Mahavir Singh Phogat on screen. Sakshi Tanwar played his wife in the movie while Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar essayed the daughters’ parts

New addition to Fahadh Faasil-Dileesh Pothen team’s Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum

We had earlier reported that the superhit Maheshinte Prathikaram combo Fahadh Faasil and Dileesh Pothan are joining again for a new movie titled as Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum. This will be yet another different movie.

Shoot for the movie is currently underway in Sheni, Kasargode. According to the latest updates coming in, 23 real-life policemen are playing key roles in this movie along with Fahadh Faasil. Recently the team had arranged a special casting call to select policemen based in Kasargode for playing pivotal parts in the movie.

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum will feature four different individuals from different backgrounds and deal with how the law and order affect their lives. The director has roped in his Maheshinte Prathikaram actors Fahadh Faasil, Soubin Shahir and Alencier Ley along with a debutante Nimisha to play the lead characters in the movie.

Sajeev Pazhoor has scripted this movie. National award winner Bijibal is composing the songs and background score while popular cinematographer/filmmaker Rajeev Ravi is cranking the camera.

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is jointly produced by Sandeep Senan and Aneesh M Thomas, under the banner Urvashi Theatres.

Dileesh Pothen’s debut movie Maheshinte Prathikaram was one of the top 3 Malayalam movies released last year. The movie was highly appreciated for its simple narrative and the skilled direction. It brought a refreshing change to the industry which has of late been witnessing a lot of stories based in the urban milieu. Set in the picturesque Idukki, the movie depicted the story of a still photographer, Mahesh Bhavana and his sweet revenge with a balance of humour and emotions.

Singam 3 aka Si3 release date confirmed

Suriya’s upcoming movie Si3 aka Singam 3 finally gets a release date. The movie will which was scheduled to release on January 26 is now postponed to February 9, due to the Jallikattu protests.

Jayam Ravi- Aravind Swamy team’s Bogan will also be hitting the screens on the same date. It must be remembered that both Bogan and Si3 were initially set to clash for Christmas 2016.

Si3 has undergone title changes from Singam 3 to S3 to C3 ans now finally Si3. It is the third installment in the popular Singam franchise . This movie is also directed by Hari who helmed the earlier two parts.

S3 was initially said to release for Diwali but was postponed for allotting an open window for Karthi’s big budget movie Kaashmora.

Later, the movie was scheduled for to release for the second week of December but again got postponed to third week, then it was scheduled as a Republic day release. Finally the makers have zeroed in on February 9.

Suriya is reprising the role of the sincere and forthright cop Durai Singam in Si3. Like the previous part, Si3 will also have two heroines. Singam regular Anushka Shetty and Shruthi Haasan are the two female leads in the movie.

Like the earlier two parts, Si3 will also have an emotional side about his family life apart from the troubles he clears as a police officer.

The movie stars North Indian actor Anoop Thakur Singh playing the baddie. Radhika Sarathkumar, Vijayakumar, Radha Ravi, Soori, Nithin Sathya, Robo Shankar, Krish and Chaams are also playing other supporting characters.

Harris Jayaraj has composed the music for this mass entertainer.

Of late Mohanlal has been looking to broaden the wings of Malayalam film industry through multistarrers and big budget projects. The actor’s next 1971 Beyond Borders directed by Major Ravi stars Tollywood actor Allu Sirish and Bollywood actor Arunoday Singh in pivotal roles. He has also committed for the epic drama Randamoozham which is said to feature leading stars from all the major Indian languages.

The latest we hear is that popular Kollywood actor Vishal will be playing a major role in Mohanlal’s upcoming movie with director B Unnikrishnan. The director has earlier informed that the movie will be a big budget project in which Mohanlal will be seen as an ex-cop in the movie. It movie will be a crime thriller with complex relationships.

Mohanlal’s home production house Aashirvad Cinemas is producing this movie. There were also reports that the makers are planning to produce this movie in multiple languages. Vishal is a popular actor in Kollywood, so we believe that the movie will be made as a bilingual in Tamil and Malayalam. This is B Unnikrishnan’s fourth movie with Mohanlal after Madampi, Grandmaster and Mr Fraud.

Vishal’s last release was Kaththi Sandai directed by Suraaj. The movie flopped at the box office. He is currently shooting for maverick filmmaker Mysskin’s fantasy thriller Thupparivalan.

Mohanlal is expected to join the sets of Unnikrishnan’s yet to be titled movie after finishing his portions for 1971 : Beyond Borders.

The protests for lifting the ban on Jallikattu seems to have finally settled down. The past one week saw youth uprising in Tamil Nadu with pro Jallikattu protests gathering in large numbers and demanding to lift the ban. People from various walks of the society participated in the protests including students, IT employees, farmers, shopkeepers etc.

The Tamil film industry members also actively participated in the uprising. Actors like Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Nayanthara Simbu, T Rajendhar, RJ Balaji and many others were seen in major protesting area, Marina beach in Chennai. Tamil actors association Nadigar Sangam also halted the shoot and organised a peaceful protest in the Nadigar Sangam grounds. Rajinikanth, Suriya, Ajith, Sivakumar and almost all the actors in the town were present.

Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan recently held a press meet to address the issue. The actor has always been vocal about his support for Jallikattu. He praised the youth uprising to lift the ban on the sport in Chennai.

During the press meet, he criticised th Tamil Nadu government for lathi charging the protests and triggering violence. He said that people would take to protest when things are forced on them.

Kamal Haasan compared the Jallikattu to elephants being allowed in Kerala. “Several people have died and wide spread destruction are reported when elephants in musth attack people and property. But elephants are still part of the temple festivals in Kerala. Elephants are used in festivals and made to stand in the scorching heat for several hours. They perform chenda melam and have fireworks in front of the elephants and the animals have been used to such things. So, why not allow jallikattu in Tamil Nadu?” he asked.

“More people die in road accidents than in Jallikattu. But no one bans vehicles and car races. Everyone knows they are dangerous and yet people participate and champions are honoured.”

On ensuring the safety of the animals that used for jallikattu, Kamal said, “The bulls that participate in Jallikattu are taken care of in the best manner by the people. They are looked after and fed well. Instead of banning Jallikattu, the government should make amends in the law and impose restrictions on how Jallikattu is conducted, so that there are no cruelties and death during the sport.”

Bollywood’s Badshah Shahrukh Khan’s latest outing Raees is a gangster story set in the 80s. The movie depicts the story of Raees Alam who starts from scratches to become a bootlegger running illegal alcohol empire. Enter ACP Majumdar, the perfect nemesis who wants to put a full stop to Raees and his business. The two try to outwit each other every time and what follows is an intense cat and mouse game. Who finally prevails forms the rest of the story.

The basic plot is straight out of the 80s movies but what sets Raees apart is the brilliant performances of the two lead actors- the entertaining Shahrukh Khan and the actor par excellence Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

The slow paced narrative is a letdown in this commercial potboiler. There is no unexpected twists and surprises in the screenplay but that’s somewhat made up with the terrific dialogue exchanges between the two actors.

Technically, Raees is top notch with excellent cinematography by the veteran KU Mohanan. The retro feel of the movie is ably complemented by the art department. A bit more chopping would have made the movie more compact, thereby avoiding the unwanted lag towards the end. The thumping background score by Ram Sampath perfectly elevated the mass quotient. Slick direction and good writing by Rahul Dholakia and his team is praiseworthy.

Coming to the performance side, the 51 year old Shah Rukh Khan is energetic as ever. His famed screen presence is on show once again as the actor is at his flamboyant best. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has the best dialogues in the movie. He is effortless as ACP Majumdar with his trademark wits and intense portrayal. Pakistani beauty Mahira Khan paired as the female lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan was seen in a typical Bollywood heroine mostly limited to a few here-and-there scenes and songs.

Only if the writing had more freshness and stayed original, Raees would have been a perfect star vehicle to set the cash registers ringing like never before. Nevertheless, the movie entertains. Riveting duel between SRK and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the USP here.

Superstar Mohanlal is going through a golden phase with three back to back successes in Malayalam. His latest release Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is getting great response from the audience with families flocking the theatres in large numbers.

Director Priyadarshan who kick-started Mohanlal’s terrific run in Mollywood through Oppam recently congratulated the actor for his actor success. The director updated a Facebook status in his official account which reads,

“With the success of Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol Mohanlal hit a hat trick success. Congratulations Director Jibu Jacob and Producer Sophia Paul.”

Oppam released during the Onam season last year was a critically and commercially acclaimed blockbuster which entered the elite 50 crore club of Mollywood. The movie also had a theatrical run of over 100 days in the State.

Before the Oppam wave could settle, Mohanlal’s highly anticipated biggie Pulimurugan hit the screens. The movie soon shattered every single pre existing box office record in the industry. It is still running in some theatres in Kerala even after crossing the 100 day mark. This action packed entertainer directed by Vysakh became the first ever Malayalam movie to enter the 100 crore club.

Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is a family entertainer that deals with the importance of relationships and family values. Meena has teamed up with Mohanlal once again for this year after Drishyam. Written by M Sindhuraj, this movie is inspired from the short story Pranayopanishath written by James VJ.

Sathyan Anthikad-Mohanlal-Sreenivasan to team up again

Rumours about the all time favourite duo Mohanlal and Sreenivasan teaming up for a movie have been doing the rounds for a long time now. There were reports about the two joining together this year for a movie directed by Priyadarshan but there was no official confirmation.

Finally, Sreenivasan himself has revealed that the evergreen trio of Mohanlal, Sathyan Anthikad and Sreenivasan will joining hands for a movie this year. He revealed the information during an interactive session with students on the last day of the recently concluded Kerala State Youth Festival in Kannur.

The cold war between Mohanlal and Sreenivasan is a poorly kept secret in the Malayalam film industry. The reason for that being the latter’s dig at Mohanlal and other superstars through his satirical movie Padmasree Bharat Dr. Saroj Kumar in 2012. However, it is now learnt that the two have finally ended their fall-out.

Sreenivasan-Mohanlal-Sathyan Anthikad created a new path of movies in Malayalam during the late 80s. Most of their movies were centred around socially relevant issues that were prevalent during that period like unemployment, dowry, political issues etc.

During this period they teamed up for movies like TP Balagopalan MA, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Nadodikkattu, Pattanapravesham. The last movie the trio worked together was Varavelpu in 1989.

If reports are to believed Sreenivasan is again working on a similar thread with the current issues in the society. More details regarding the project is expected in the coming days

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s latest release hit screens worldwide on January 12. The movie was released in Kerala during the theater strike which blocked the release of Malayalam movies. This ensured that the movie had an open window release in around 200+ theaters.

However, the movie opened to generally mixed to negative reviews in Kerala. Bairavaa is a typical mass masala entertainer with all the mandatory commercial elements. Malayali audience turned down the movie as it was evident from the steady dip in collections from the first week itself.

With the theater strike being resolved, Malayalam movies started releasing with Dulquer Salman’s Jomonte Suvisheshangal hitting screens on January 19 followed by Mohanlal’s Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol on 20.

With the release of these biggies, the number of theaters screening Bairavaa got reduced. Also, highly anticipated Bollywood movies like Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees also released this week making it even more worse for Bairavaa, as the theater count will again be reduced.

Even though the movie could not make any rich dividends in Kerala like other Vijay starrers, it is doing great business in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu especially the B and C centres. The movie directed by Azhagiya Tamizh Magan fame Bharhathan featured Keerthy Suresh as the female lead. It had a host of supporting actors including Jagpathi Babu, Daniel Balaji, Sathish, Thambi Ramaiah, Sija Rose, Aparna Vinod, Aadukalam Naren, Sreeman, Vijayaraghavan, Seema G Nair, Roshan Basheer etc.
