Dangal becomes the highest grossing Bollywood movie in Kerala

Aamir Khan’s latest movie Dangal has been shattering several box office records ever since it released on December 23. The movie took the Indian box office by storm rewriting all pre existing box office records. The movie recently pipped the lifetime collections of PK, the 2014 blockbuster to become the highest grossing Bollywood movie ever.

According to trade sources, the movie has now become the highest grossing Bollywood movie in Kerala
outperforming PK. The movie took a massive opening in Kerala box office touching Rs 20 lakh from the first day itself. It has now created history by emerging as the first Bollywood film to cross the Rs 10 crore mark at the Kerala box office. The previous record was held by PK which had grossed an amount of Rs 9.50 crores from its successful theatrical run in Kerala.

Dangal has already registered Rs 10.50 at the box office within a month of it’s release. It is expected to cross the 12 crore mark soon. Remarkably, Dangal escalated past superstar Rajinikanth’s blockbuster Kabali and Mohanlal’s historic success, Pulimurugan to become the fastest 2 crore grosser from the Kochi multiplexes alone.

The movie was largely benefited by the cinema strike in Kerala that blocked the release of many Malayalam movies. So Dangal had a free run without any real competition.

Dangal, a sports drama directed by Nitesh Tiwari is based on the real life story of a wrestler from Haryana, Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his two daughters- Geetha Kumari Phogat and Babita Kumari Phogat to world class wrestlers.

Sakshi Tanwar played Aamir Khan’s wife in the movie while Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar played the daughters’ parts.

New union will work for the betterment of cinema: Dileep

We had earlier reported about the cinema strike being called off and a new federation being formed with the support of actor Dileep. The actor while talking to the media said that the new union will be for the betterment of cinema.

He said, “This new union is an union of Malayalam cinema. The future of the industry will be taken care by the union. The newly formed union will function with the support of producers and distributors.”

When asked about Liberty Basheer’s allegations against him the actor said, “I don’t anything to say about that. Apart from an actor, I am also a producer, distributor and a theatre owner. So I can understand their situations. My theatre was built with 80% loan and I am paying the interests even today, so I don’t have anything to say about Liberty Basheer’s allegations. Four movies are yet to be released. Theatres should not be closed. Demands should be only made for needs and not out of greed. There is no cinema without audience and they are our guests. So the doors of cinema halls should not be closed before them.”

Exhibitors Federation president, Liberty Basheer had earlier accused Dileep for trying to destroy the federation.

Cinema strike finally called off

Finally the cinema strike that has been plaguing the industry for almost a month now has finally been called off by the Exhibitors Federation. Theatre strike was started by the exhibitors federation over the profit share issue with the producers association.

Liberty Basheer, president of the exhibitors federation has said that the strike was called off after the Chief Minister’s intervention. The government had taken a strict stand on the issue.

A meeting initiated by actor Dileep is scheduled to be held today in Kochi. Producers association members, distributors and theatre owners will take part in the meeting. It is expected that a new federation will be formed after the discussions today.

Even though, Liberty Basheer maintained that the decision was taken not because of the new federation, industry insiders believe that he feared losing his position and hence the decision was taken to call off the strike.

The theatre owners association Exhibitors Federation led by president Liberty Basheer had earlier demanded a 50-50 profit share from the theatrical collections of new releases. The producers and distributors opposed the demand fearing losses. Though several rounds of talks were held between the two parties, they failed to reach a consensus. Finally, the government’s stand and actor Dileep’s timely intervention in the issue worked.

Now that the strike has been called off, we can expect the release dates of movies soon. Dulquer Salmaan’s Jomonte Suvisheshangal directed by Sathyan Anthikkad, Mohanlal’s family entertainer Munthirivallikalal Thalirkkumbol, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s horror thriller Ezra and Jayasurya’s Fukri are the four major movies that were postponed due to the strike.

Its Official Now ! Mohanlal-Jackie Chan team’s Nair San to be made on 400 crores budget

Last year Mohanlal achieved what seemed to be improbable for a Malayalam movie- reaching the 100 crore mark. The gargantuan success of Pulimurugan which also crossed the 150 crore mark has given a new breathe a life to the industry proving that big budget movies are viable in Mollywood also. Mohanlal’s long awaited Randamoozham, planned to be made on a whopping budget of 600 crores, will reportedly go on floors next year. But before all that, in 2009 there were reports about global superstar Jackie Chan and Mohanlal teaming up for a movie titled Nair San. The project which could not materialize in 2009 is still on with the director Albert Antony (Alberrt Antoni) himself, making it official in a recent interview.

According to the director, Nair San was first planned to kick-start in 2009. Both Mohanlal and Jackie Chan were roped in to play the leads. A popular production house from India was all set to fund the movie but they later opted out citing budget as the reason. But Albert Antony did not lose hope and reworked the entire script. After completing the script, he registered it in the Writers Guild of America. This time, the director is waiting for some Hollywood production house to come on board as he feels that Indian companies will find it difficult for fund transactions as the movie will be shot in locations like China and Mongolia.

The plot of the movie is set in the pre-independence period. It will showcase the life story of a Malayali soldier, Ayyappan Nair. Jackie Chan is said to play the role of a martial arts trainer. Japan, China and Mongolia will be the main locations for the movie.

Albert Antony has confirmed that Mohanlal and Jackie Chan are the only actors considered for the roles. Even after the project was dropped in 2009, he is still in touch with Jackie Chan’s office. He had signed for an agreement back then with the production company but that will have to be renewed now. The director also said that Mohanlal regularly enquires about the project whenever the two meet.

Nair San will be made as a big budget project because they will have to recreate the locations of India and Japan during the independence period. The director has said that, Nair San will be made with the best available technical team. He had talked with Oscar award winning composer AR Rahman back in 2009, but in the current scenario they will finalize the crew members only after a production company comes on board.

Now that the director himself has officially confirmed the project, fans will be waiting with bated breath to see two superstars sharing screen space with each other.

Vidya Balan opts out of director Kamal’s Aami

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has pulled out of director Kamal’s upcoming project Aami, a biopic on based on the real life of controversial writer Kamala Das. While some reports allege that the actress opted out due to political pressure from the right-wing, the actress maintains that she has backed out due to a difference of opinion with the director.

The movie was highly anticipated by the Malayali audience. Sources close to the actress reveal that she signed for the project after initially liking the story but now she preferred to opt out after reading the final script, which she did not like. They have dismissed reports about the actress opting out of the project due to the director’s stand in political issues.

It was earlier reported that Vidya Balan, who is a big supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was against director Kamal’s political inclinations. But her close associates inform that an actress of Vidya’s stature would never do that and her choice was purely based on professional reasons.

The movie was initially scheduled to go on floors in September 2015 but got postponed many times. The actress had changed the shooting schedule twice citing inconveniences. Director Kamal pinned high hopes on the project and even recorded songs in Mumbai.

Vidya Balan liked the script initially and was willing to do the project but some final corrections in the script from the director’s side did not please her. The actress and Kamal had very different approaches to the film.

Incidentally, this is the second time the actress is opting out of a Malayalam movie at the last moment and both the times the director was Kamal. In 2003, the director planned a movie titled as Chakram with Vidya Balan, who was a debutante back then, Mohanlal and Dileep in the lead roles. But the project could not materialize and she entered Bollywood where she soon became one of the top actresses. Chakram was later directed by Lohithadas with Prithviraj Sukumaran and Meera Jasmine as the leads.
