Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey Review: A rollicking entertainer that also enlightens

Of late, there have been several films in Indian cinema that explore patriarchy and toxic households. ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’, ‘Thappad’, ‘Darlings’, and ‘Ammu’ are some of them. Vipin Das’ ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’ (JJJJH) is a new entrant to the list, but what makes the film stand out is its treatment. Unlike the other films that are quite heavy and serious in nature, ‘JJJJH’ is a hilarious entertainer that’s also thought-provoking. It is not easy to make a fun film out of such a topic, but the makers have done an incredible job in handling the issue with the right sensibility while also making sure that the audience is entertained and invested.

Darshana Rajendran and Basil Joseph play the central roles in the film. Darshana’s titular character Jaya is the representative of a girl from a typical middle-class family. All her choices in life right from her childhood have been decided by her family. Though Jaya wishes to study and secure a job before marrying someone, she is forced into marriage by her ‘well-meaning’ family. She marries Rajesh, who owns a poultry farm. Just days into their marriage life, Jaya realises that Rajesh is short-tempered and a product of conditioning and extreme patriarchy. She faces regular physical violence and it takes her almost to breaking point. From there, the movie takes a drastic shift in tone with Jaya retaliating. How? Do watch the film and find out.

‘JJJH’ is a brilliant satire combined with excellent performances from all its actors. The initial portions are extremely disturbing but they all get a proper, satisfying pay off. Anything more about the film will end up as spoilers. It is one of those films that’s best experienced without knowing anything about it. ‘JJJH’ is easily one of the best Malayalam films of the year. It packs quite a punch.

Prince Review: Jokes are overdone and not always funny in this Sivakarthikeyan film

Prince Review: Jokes are overdone and not always funny in this Sivakarthikeyan film

Sivakarthikeyan is someone who has an excellent track record in comedy films. His humour timing and energy is matchless, and the actor has proved it time and again. His new film ‘Prince’ promised to be a rollicking entertainer, particularly with Sivakarthikeyan teaming up with director Anudeep, whose previous film ‘Jathi Ratnalu’ was a much celebrated fun film.

In ‘Prince’, Anudeep creates an idiosyncratic world where his characters are all dimwits. Their dialogues don’t always make sense but they say it with proper conviction. Sivakarthikeyan plays Anbu, a secondary school teacher in Pondicherry. His father, Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj) is so progressive that he disowned his daughter for marrying someone from their own caste. He takes promise from Anbu to marry someone out their religion and caste. The dad feels proud when Anbu falls in love with a colleague, Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka) who is a foreigner. Ulaganathan thinks she is a French native and accepts their proposal. Little did the patriotic freedom fighter’s son know that Jessica is actually British. This creates ripples in not just the family, but in the entire town. How Anbu overcomes all these obstacles and eventually unites with his lady love is what ‘Prince’ is about.

Anudeep’s screenplay is abundant with comedy moments, but the problems is most of these jokes land properly. It is probably because the Telugu filmmaker’s lack of knowledge of the local culture or a case of ‘lost in translation’. The Indo-British cultural differences and opposition from people in this functional town lead to a comedy of errors and misfortunes, but if only these moments elicited laughs throughout. To credit where it’s due, Sivakarthikeyan tries hard. He is the only actor in the film, not even the veteran Sathyaraj, is able to properly fit in Anudeep’s world. With his innocence and charm, the actor sells his role effortlessly and make the romantic moments with Maria work.

‘Prince’ missed good supporting actors who could match up to Sivakarthikeyan and keep the fun game rolling. Premgi, in a grey-shaded role, fails to bring the intended quirkiness. Sathish Krishnan, Prankster Rahul and Finally Bharath, who play Sivakarthikeyan’s sidekicks, hardly have anything to do in the film. It the veteran Anandaraj, who despite making a brief appearance, who earns the claps and laughs.

‘Prince’, like ‘Doctor’, is an experiment to attempt a new brand of humour. While the Nelson Dilipkumar film had a host of incredibly talented actors who could light up the screen with their fun numbers, ‘Prince’ relied entirely on Sivakarthikeyan and it was too heavy for the young actor.

Sardar Movie Review: A spy-thriller with a social message

Sardar Movie Review: A spy-thriller with a social message

Karthi’s new outing ‘Sardar’ has him in a dual role — father, who is a spy, and son, who is a cop. It is his third attempt playing dual roles after ‘Siruthai’ and ‘Kashmora’. It is the actor’s riveting performance that holds together ‘Sardar’ and makes it an engaging watch… to a large extent. PS Mithran is one of those filmmakers who have expansive, commendable ideas but are not really skilled enough to incorporate them wisely in a film. ‘Sardar’ suffers the same problem as his previous films ‘Irumbuthirai’ and ‘Hero’. While ‘Irumbuthirai’ was about cyber crimes, ‘Hero’ tried to expose the faults in our education system. On similar lines, ‘Sardar’ has its focus on water and geopolitics. Unlike the other two films, what works in the favour of ‘Sardar’ is that it has a riveting spy-thriller angle to it. It brings a lot of raciness and brains to the film.

‘Sardar’ begins with the younger Karthi, who is Vijay Prakash, a fun-loving smart cop. He craves for fame as his father Chandra Bose was declared a national traitor, due to which, all his family members committed suicide. Vijay, who is looking for new ways to erase the identity of being a traitor’s son, finds a perfect catch when he takes up the case of catching an unidentified person, who has stolen a highly classified file from the Research and Analysis Wing’s (RAW) secret vault. The investigation leads him to a lot of disturbing realities and eventually the truth of his father’s legacy. Bose, who goes by the spy code Sardar, meanwhile is at the Chittagong prison for around 30 years. Towards the interval block, the screenplay lands at an interesting point when both the father and the son learn about the bigger picture. From there, it’s about how the two try and stop the evil forces at work.

PS Mithran, like his previous films, is clueless about adding needless commercial elements. In a film that’s as serious and racy as this, there’s no need for any romance or songs. Both the Karthis get love interests in Raashi Khanna and Rajisha Vijayan, and it’s not as if they bring any value to the narrative. Thankfully, Laila, in her comeback, gets a meaty role. It is her character Sameera through which Vijay Prakash and the audience learn about the water conglomerate, One India One Pipeline.

Like mentioned above, Karthi’s performance is one of the best things about ‘Sardar’. The film has two terrific action blocks and the actor pulls it off with aplomb. The spy thriller angle of ‘Sardar’ has immense potential and no wonder why the makers chose for an open-ended ending hinting at a sequel. One can only wish that Mithran holds his tendency to squeeze in so much information that by the time the film ends, you forget most of it.
