The Priest set to release outside Kerala from this Friday

Mammootty starrer ‘The Priest’ is having a good run at the Kerala box office. Hitting screens on March 11, the film opened to excellent response with fans lapping up the film. The weekend saw high occupancy at most places and special shows were added in some centres. The film is now all set for release outside Kerala from this Friday (March 19). The positive response in Kerala is expected to reflect on the opening there.

Directed by debutant Jofin T Chacko, ‘The Priest’ is a mystery-thriller with supernatural elements in it. Mammootty plays a priest named Father Carmen Benedict, who assists the police department in solving crimes. Apart from that, he is also into parapsychology. During one such investigation, he comes across a mysterious girl named Ameya. The film is majorly centred around his encounter with the girl. ‘Kaithi’ fame Baby Monica plays the kid’s role while Nikhila Vimal and Manju Warrier essay other important roles.

Lokesh Kanagaraj celebrates his birthday with Tamil cinema’s top filmmakers

It was ‘Master’ director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s birthday last day. Fans released special common DPs and tribute videos for the youngster, who is fast climbing up the ranks to become one of the most sought-after directors in Kollywood today. It was a really special birthday for the youngster as he got to celebrate it with veteran filmmakers Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Gautham Menon, Lingusamy, Vasanthabalan and Sasi. It is learnt that the gathering was hosted by Gautham Menon at his office in Chennai.

Lokesh tweeted photos of the cake cutting and thanked the senior directors for making it is his birthday ever. His tweet reads,

Sampath to reprise Murali Gopy’s role in Drishyam 2 Telugu remake

Shoot for ‘Drishyam 2’ Telugu version is currently progressing at a brisk pace. Jeethu Joseph, who directed the original is helming the remake as well. Last day, the director shared a photo from the film’s sets with the main actors. Venkatesh plays the lead character named Rambabu in the film. Meena and Esther Anil are reprising their characters from the Malayalam version. Nadiya Moidu is essaying the part played by Asha Sarath.

Sampath is the new addition to the cast. He is supposedly playing the role which Murali Gopy did in ‘Drishyam 2’. Murali’s performance was unanimously appreciated with many rating it as his best till date. Sampath being an equally good actor is also expected to come up with a solid act.

The Telugu version titled ‘Drushyam 2’ is jointly produced by Suresh Privations Pvt Ltd, Rajkumar Theatres Pvt Ltd and Antony Perumbavoor’s Aashirvad Cinemas. While the Malayalam version had a direct OTT release, the Telugu remake is expected to have a grand theatrical release.

Lucifer Telugu remake starring Chiranjeevi to begin in April

As reported earlier, Mohanlal’s blockbuster Malayalam film ‘Lucifer’ is being remade in Telugu with Chiranjeevi as the lead. Mohan Raja of ‘Thani Oruvan’ fame is directing the film, which has been tentatively titled as ‘Chiru 153’. The makers are planning to start shooting from next month.

The team is currently finalizing the cast and crew. Nayanthara is most likely to play the female lead’s role. She will be seen playing the character essayed by Manju Warrier in the original. Though there were names like Suhasini and Priya Mani doing the rounds initially, the makers felt that the character demanded an actor of the stature of Nayanthara. She is said to have given given her nod already.

Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan had acquired the remake rights of ‘Lucifer’ right after its release. Since the orginal was a huge blockbuster and director Mohan Rajan is known for successfully remaking several hit films, expectations are on the higher side. The Telugu version is expected to have a few changes from the original, which was directed by Prithviraj. A second part for the Malayalam version has already been announced.

Vijay Babu’s Friday Film House is producing a new film with Indrans in the lead. Titled as ‘Home’, the film is scripted and directed by Rojin Thomas, who was one of the directors of the hit film, ‘Philips and the Monkey Pen’. Indrans is celebrating his birthday today and it also his 40th year in the industry. As a tribute to the veteran, the makers of ‘Home’ have shared the teaser online.

Releasing the teaser through his social media handle, Vijay Babu wrote,

Though Indrans has been part of the industry for so long, it is in the last few years that has been doing performance-oriented characters. ‘Home’ also marks his first mainstream project as a lead actor. From the teaser, the film looks like a family drama. Indrans plays the role of a simple middle-aged common man. Manju Pillai plays his wife’s role while Sreenath Bhasi and ‘Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal’ fame Naslen will be seen as their kids.
Maniyanpilla Raju, Srikant Murali, Vijay Babu and Johny Antony are also part of the cast.

Vinay to play the antagonist’s role in Suriya 40

Actor Suriya is joining the sets of his new film with director Pandiraj today. Tentatively titled as ‘Suriya 40’, the film is produced by Sun Pictures. Touted to be a mass entertainer, the film has an elaborate star cast comprising of several known actors. Priyanka Arul Mohan of ‘Gang Leader’ fame plays the female lead. The makers have signed Vinay of ‘Unnale Unnale’ fame as the antagonist. He had earlier played a cold-blooded villain’s role in Mysskin’s ‘Thupparivalan’. Sivakarthikeyan’s upcoming film ‘Doctor’ also has Vinay in a negative role.

‘Suriya 40’ is expected to be a proper commercial entertainer that appeals to all sections of the audience. Raj Kiran, Sathyaraj, Saranya Ponvannan, Jayaprakash, Ilavarasan, Devadarshini, Subbu Panchu Arunachalam and ‘Vada Chennai’ fame Saran will be seen in supporting roles.

On the technical front, the film has Rathnavelu as the cinematographer and D Imman as the composer. Ruben handles the edits.

Soorarai Pottru out of Oscars race!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently released the Oscar nominations for 2021. Much to the disappointment of Indian cinema lovers, Suriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ failed to make it to the prestigious list. Earlier, the film had made it to the list of 366 films eligible for Best Picture in the Academy Awards.

Soorarai Pottru joined the Oscars under the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and a few other categories. It was the only Indian film amongst the films eligible for nomination at this year’s Oscars.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ directed by Sudha Kongara tells the story of a common man’s journey from humble backgrounds to accomplish his dream of launching an airlines service with the aim of serving the underprivileged. The film is actually inspired from the real life of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan.

Suriya’s performance as the protagonist Nedumaaran Rajangam aka Maara got rated by many as one of his finest in his whole career. Lead actress Aparna Balamurali and veteran Urvashi also found widespread appreciation. The film had a direct release in Amazon Prime Video and emerged as a big success.

After an excellent opening weekend, the real litmus test for ‘The Priest’ has begun from today. Despite being a working day, major centres are all having high occupancy and seats are filling in fast for the evening and night shows.

Ajith’s ‘Valimai’ is one of the most hyped projects in Tamil cinema in recent years. Though it has been over a year since shoot commenced, the makers had not been sharing regular updates which did gone well with the fans. #ValimaiUpdate has been a regularly trending hashtag in Twitter and fans often storm the social media handles of the film’s cast and crew members pestering them for updates.

‘Valimai update’ soon became a topic of jokes in social medias. Multiple videos of fans asking politicians, sportspersons and others for updates on ‘Valimai’ have gone viral. Samantha starrer Shakuntalam launched; Sufiyum Sujathayum fame Dev Mohan to play the male lead

Samantha’s new pan-Indian film ‘Shakuntalam’ got launched today. The film is directed by Gunasekhar, who has made popular Telugu films like ‘Okkadu’ and ‘Rudhramadevi’. It is the screen adaptation of Kalidasa’s epic Sanskrit play, Abhijnana Shakuntalam. It explores the love story of King Dushyantha and Shakuntala, the daughter of sage Vishwamitra and apsara Menaka.

Malayalam actor Dev Mohan has been signed as the male lead. He will be seen playing the role of Dushyantha in the film. The model-turned-actor grabbed eyeballs with his performance in the Malayalam film, ‘Sufiyum Sujathayum’,

For ‘Shakuntalam’, he has undergone training in horse riding, sword fighting etc. Apart from that, he is also taking classes in Telugu. Samantha has also been training in classical dancing for the past few months. The actress is highly excited about the film as she has never done a character like this before in her decade-long career.

This ambitious film is produced by Neelima Guna and will have music scored by Mani Sharma. Shoot has been planned to kick-start next week.
