Ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan recently cranked the camera for superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Darbar’. It is his third film with director AR Murugadoss after ‘Thuppakki’ and ‘Spyder’. Santosh Sivan has always been a man of few words but in a recent interview to Sify, the veteran was all praise of actress Nivetha Thomas for her performance in ‘Darbar’.

Nivetha plays the role of Rajinikanth’s daughter in the film. Santhosh Sivan is quoted saying, “Nivetha has a pivotal role and she is a brilliant actress. I was really impressed by her outstanding performance and she will be the dark horse in the film.”

Though Nivetha started her acting career in Malayalam with a State award winning performance in ‘Veruthe Oru Bharya’, she has been more active in other languages of late. She is quite popular in Telugu film industry thanks to the success of her films like ‘Ninnu Kori’, ‘Gentleman’ and more recently ‘Brochevarevarura’.

Soubin Shahir signs new films with Amal Neerad and Aashiq Abu

For the last couple of years, Soubin Shahir has been very busy doing back to back films. This year four films in which he played lead roles (Kumbalangi Nights, Ambili, Vikrithi and Android Kunjappan) have released so far. He has a slew of other promising projects lined up for next year. In his recent interview with The Cue, he revealed about signing new projects with Aashiq Abu and Amal Neerad.

With Aashiq Abu, Soubin is doing a film that deals with a fantasy subject. Unni R has scripted the film which has a fascinating story of a ‘gandharvan’. Soubin will be essaying the lead role of the gandharvan. For the uninformed, ‘Gandharva’ is a mythological creature in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is a name used for distinct heavenly beings.

It must be noted that legendary filmmaker Padmarajan had helmed a similar fantasy film titled ‘Njan Gandharvan’ back in 1991. The film, which was about a girl and her passion for a celestial lover, who is invisible to others, is considered as a cult classic by Malayalam movie lovers.

Aashiq Abu and Unni R are expected to give a twist to this usual story as their film will be devoid of the usual stereotypes associated with the gandharvan concept and instead be a socially relevant one. More details regarding the project are expected to be revealed during the official announcement.

Soubin has also committed for a new film with his mentor Amal Neerad’s. However, shoot for the same will begin only after the completion of the director’s much-hyped ‘Bilal’.

Shoot for Mammootty’s new film ‘One’ is currently progressing. Santhosh Viswanath of ‘Chirakodinja Kinavukal’ is directing the film. It is a political drama scripted by Bobby-Sanjay and produced by Ichais Productions. As informed earlier, Mammootty plays the role of a Chief Minister in the film. His character is named as Kadakkal Chandran.

Murali Gopy and Joju george will be seen in other prominent roles. While Joju plays the role of party secretary, Murali Gopy is essaying the part of opposition leader. Bobby-Sanjay have taken inspiration from some real life incidents to script this film. Mammootty’s Kadakkal Chandran is a full-time politician who started from the grassroot level before making his way up. Along with the political angle, there also will be strong family emotions in the film.

This is the first time Bobby and Sanjay are scripting a Mammootty starrer and in addition to that, it has been ages since the star has done a political drama in Malayalam. So expectations are on the higher side. With ‘One’, the makers are intending to show how an ideal Chief Minister should function.

The film has a big supporting cast comprising of Nimisha Sajayan, Ranjith, Mathew Thomas, Gayathri Arun, Balachandra Menon, Sudev Nair, Suresh Krishna, Salim Kumar, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Mamukoya, Balaji Sharma and many others.

As we had reported earlier, Malayali filmmaker Jeethu Jospeh is entering Bollywood with a thriller film starring Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor in the lead roles. The film titled as ‘The Body’ is the remake of a popular Spanish flick named, ‘El Cuerpo’. Shoot for the film was wrapped in July last year and it will finally be hitting screens on December 13. The makers meanwhile have released the trailer online.

Along with Rishi Kapoor and Emraah Hashmi, the film also has Vedhika and Sobhita Dhulipala in important roles. Jeethu Joseph is a filmmaker well known for helming thriller films and ‘The Body’ also belongs to his favourite genre – thriller. As per the makers, it is a crime thriller with elements of mystery.

Reportedly, the producers had approached Jeethu after acquiring the remake rights of ‘El Cuerpo’. Sunil Kheterpal is producing the film and it will be presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.

Written and directed by AR Murugadoss, the film is a cop-action thriller that has Rajinikanth in a police officer’s role. He recently started dubbing for his portions in the film.

‘Darbar’ has Rajinikanth playing a cop’s role after nearly two decades. So naturally, there is a lot of expectations on the film. Nayanthara is paired opposite him and Nivetha Thomas will be seen as his daughter. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty plays the villain role. The supporting cast also includes Prateik Babbar, Sriman, Yogi Babu, cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s Yograj Singh and many others.

‘Darbar’ also has a strong technical crew headlined by ace DOP Santosh Sivan, music director Anirudh Ravichander and veteran editor Sreekar Prasad. Ram-Laxman and Peter Hein are choreographing the action sequences. Lyca Productions is producing the film.

Bigil goes past Vikram’s I to become the highest grossing Tamil movie in Kerala!

Vijay’s ‘Bigil’ had recently crossed the Rs 300 crore mark from its gross collection worldwide. The film is still doing well in domestic centres. In Kerala, it has successfully gone past Vikram’s ‘I’ to emerge as the highest grossing Tamil film in Kerala. It took just over two weeks for ‘Bigil’ to shatter this four-year-long record.

With this, Vijay now has six films in the top 10 list of highest grossing Tamil films in Kerala. ‘Mersal’, ‘Sarkar’, ‘Theri’, ‘Thuppakki’ and ‘Kaththi’ are his other five films. Rajinikanth has three films among this list – ‘Enthiran’, ‘2.0’ and ‘Kabali’.

‘Bigil’ was released on October 25 in a limited number of screens in Kerala rather than the usual wide release which was due to the restriction enforced for other language films in the state. It also faced stiff competition from Karthi’s ‘Kaithi’, which got unanimously positive reviews. ‘Bigil’, on the other hand was opened to mixed reviews.

In spite of all that, ‘Bigil’ emerged as this year’s second biggest opener in Kerala. While Mohanlal’s ‘Lucifer’ grossed Rs 6.37 crore on the opening day, ‘Bigil’ earned around Rs 4.80 crore. The Vijay starrer is still running in a good number of centres in the state.

The pretty actress made her entry to Malayalam cinema earlier this year with the Nivin Pauly-Nayanthara starrer ‘Love Action Drama’. She played a very important role in the film as Nayanthara’s close friend. .

Dhanya is now making her debut as a lead actress in Malayalam with ‘Puzhikkadakan’. The film directed by debutant Gireesh Nair is a family drama that has Chemban Vinod Jose in the lead role. Dhanya is paired with him. Jayasurya is also there in an extended cameo role.

As part of promotions of ‘Puzhikkadakan’, we recently interviewed Dhanya, where she opened up about her expectations on the film, her working experiences with some of the biggest names in Tamil cinema, her bond with Nayanthara and much more.

When asked if she follows Malayalam cinema, the outspoken Dhanya promptly admitted that she is not someone who watches Malayalam films regularly. But the actress was quick to add about her admiration for young stars Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan, whom she started following since ‘Banglaore Days’. Dhanya revealed that she is a huge fan of both the actors and have watched all their films since then. She also added that of late she has started watching more Malayalam films.

Besides ‘Puzhikkadakan’, Dhanya is doing a couple of Telugu films and is also in talks for another Malayalam film. ‘Puzhikkadakan’, meanwhile, is getting ready for release on November 29.

Shoot for Prithviraj starrer ‘Driving Licence’ has finally been wrapped. Director Jean Paul Lal aka Lal Jr took to his social media handle Just a while back to inform the same. The makers will now be working hard on the post-production as the film is already slated to hit screens during the Christmas season next month.

‘Driving Licence’ Sachi is expected to be a complete commercial entertainer. The film has Prithviraj playing the role of a film superstar, who is passionate about luxury cars. Suraj Venjaramoodu also essays a very important role as a vehicle inspector. The film basically revolves around the conflict that arises between these two characters. Deepti Sati of ‘Neena’ fame and Miya George play the two female leads. Deepti will be seen as Prithviraj’s wife in the film.

‘Driving Licence’ is the second production venture of Prithviraj’s banner after the science-fiction thriller ‘9’. Listin Stephen’s Magic Frames is also involved in the production. DOP Alex J Pulickal, music director duo Yakzan Gary Perera and Neha Nair, and editor Ratheesh Raj are part of the film’s core technical crew.

Raatchasan director Ramkumar’s next with Dhanush to begin early next year

After the massive success of the crime-thriller ‘Raatchasan’, director Ramkumar will be next teaming up with Dhanush. They are said to be working on a fantasy comedy, shoot for which is scheduled to begin early next year. Last day, the director had met Dhanush at the sets of ‘Pattas’ to discuss about the project. A photo of the two has also been shared on social medias.

Earlier in an interview, Ramkumar had said that his film will have Dhanush in a very unique role that only an actor his caliber can pull off. The makers are planning to shoot for around six months for this film. It will be produced by Sathya Jyothi Films.

Dhanush is currently shooting for ‘Pattas’, which is directed by Durai Senthil Kumar. The duo had earlier worked together in ‘Kodi’ fame. The director’s debut film ‘Ethir Neechal’ was also produced by Dhanush.

The star has a highly promising line up of films coming up. He recently finished shooting for Karthik Subbaraj’s gangster-thriller film. After the completion of ‘Pattas’, he will start working on ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ director Mari Selvaraj’s new film. Apart from that, he is also in talks for new projects with directors Selvaraghavan, Anand L Rai and Vetrimaaran.

We had earlier reported about a Netflix anthology film akin to ‘Lust Stories’ being made in Tamil. Directors Vetrimaaran, Vignesh Shivan, Gautham Menon and Sudha Kongara are coming together for this flick. Vignesh Shivan has already completed shooting for his part. Anjali and Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin are starring in this segment.

Latest news is that Prakash Raj and Sai Pallavi will be playing the lead roles in Vetrimaaran’s film. The director, who is fresh from the blockbuster success of ‘Asuran’, will be next working on this anthology. Among the two lead actors, Prakash Raj had previously worked with Vetri in ‘Asuran’. Sai Pallavi, who is known to be extremely selective with her projects, is said to have bagged a performance-oriented role in this film.

Reportedly, honour killing will be the common theme in these four films. Details regarding the cast members of Gautham Menon’s and Sudha Kongara’s films are not yet known. Official announcement is expected to be made soon.
