‘Bigil’ is continuing its terrific run in both the domestic and overseas territories. The film has crossed the magical 250 crore mark thereby becoming the third Vijay film on a trot to achieve this feat. Earlier, ‘Mersal’ and ‘Sarkar’ had also crossed this figure. Vijay is only the second South Indian actor after ‘Baahubali’ star Prabhas to have three films in the 250 crore club.

‘Bigil’ is having high occupancy in most centres in the second week as well. Director Atlee has packaged it a mass entertainer with sports element at its fore. This cleverly done commercial packaging has ensured that the film appeals not just to the fans but to the general audience, particularly the families as well.

Except in Tamil Nadu, ‘Bigil’ has already emerged as as a profitable venture in all the other domestic territories. In TN alone, ‘Bigil’ has grossed over Rs 120 crore and is certain to achieved the break even status by this week itself.

Films revolving around cine stars and their fans have been made multiple times across languages. ‘Rasikan’, ‘One Way Ticket’, ‘Mohanlal’ and ‘My Fan Shibu’ are some of the Malayalam films that come under this category. It seems like Prithviraj’s upcoming release ‘Driving Licence’ is also one such film. The actor hinted the same by sharing a fan edit video featuring footages of fans flocking superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Vijay and Ajith.

As per our sources within the industry, ‘Driving Licence’ has Prithviraj playing the role of a popular film star, who is passionate about luxury cars. Suraj Venjaramoodu essays an equally important role a vehicle inspector. The story revolves around the conflict that arises between these two characters. Sachi has scripted the film and it is being directed by Lal Jr.

Deepti Sati of ‘Neena’ fame and Miya George play the two female leads. DOP Alex J Pulickal, composer duo Yakzan Gary Perera and Neha Nair, and editor Ratheesh Raj are part of the film’s core technical crew. Prithviraj’s is producing the film jointly with Listin Stephen’s Magic Frames. The makers are planning to release the film next month during the Christmas season.

Ashtoush Gowraiker, known for his period dramas like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, is back with another ambitious film. Titled as ‘Panipat’, the film is an epic war-drama set in 1761. The film has Arjun Kapoor in the lead role as Sadashiv Rao Bhau, the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army. Kriti Sanon plays his wife Parvati Bai. Sanjay Dutt plays the antagonist Ahmad Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt), the King of Afghanistan.

‘Panipat’ is scripted by Ashutosh Gowariker, Chandrashekhar Dhavalikar, Ranjeet Bahadur and Aditya Rawal. Dialogues are penned by Ashok Chakradhar. As per the makers, the story is set in a period when the Maratha Empire had reached its zenith and their grip on Hindostan reigned supreme with no-one to challenge them until an invader set his eyes on the throne of Hindostan. That’s when Sadashiv Rao Bhau, the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army led a northern expedition in order to repel the invading forces of Ahmad Shah Abdali, the king of Afghanistan. This war epic entails the events that led to the famous third battle of Panipat.

The film’s huge star cast comprises of Padmini Kolhapure, Mohnish Bahl, Kunal Kapoor, Suhasini Muley, Ravindra Mahajani, Zeenat Aman, Sahil Salathia, Gashmeer Mahajani, Mantra, Abhishek Nigam, Nawab Shah, Vinita Mahesh, Krutika Deo and Shyam Mashalkar. CK Muraleedharan is the cinematographer and music is composed by Ajay-Atul.

‘Panipat’, produced by Sunita Gowraiker and Rohit Shelatkar, will be hitting screens worldwide on December 6.

After Thalapathy 64, Lokesh Kanagaraj to direct Kamal Haasan

Despite being just two films old, Lokesh Kanagaraj is already one of the most wanted filmmakers in Kollywood. The blockbuster success of his recently released ‘Kaithi’ has taken him to the top league of filmmakers. He is already doing a mega biggie in the form of ‘Thalapathy 64’ that has a huge star comprising of Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Antony Varghese, Andrea Jeremiah, Malavika Mohanan and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj. Shoot for the film is currently progressing in Delhi.

Meanwhile, offers are still pouring in for Lokesh. He had announced a sequel for ‘Kaithi’ and besides that he is also in talks for a project with Suriya. Latest reports suggest that, Lokesh has been approached by Kamal Haasan’s production house Raaj Kamal Films International to do a film for them. If things go well, Kamal Haasan himself will be starring in the film.

It is worth a mention that, Lokesh is a huge fan of Kamal and has openly confessed that in several of his interviews. He had even revealed that ‘Kaithi’ was inspired by Kamal’s ‘Virumaandi’. It will be great to see a fanboy like Lokesh directing Kamal.

Dileep’s new film with director Joshiy has been titled as ‘On Air Eapen’. Dileep plays the titular rope of Eapen in this film, which is said to be a media-based film. Dileep will be seen playing the role of a journalist. The film is scripted by newcomers Arun and Niranjan. Sajin Jaffar, who was a former associate of Asif Ali in his production ventures, is funding this film independently under the banner of Jaffer’s Productions.

After a string of flops, director Joshiy recently made a strong comeback with ‘Porinju Mariam Jose’. ‘On Air Eapen’ is expected to be an entertainer on the lines of the director’s own superhit film ‘Run Baby Run’. The actor-director duo have a pretty good track record after having worked together in hit films like ‘Lion’, ‘July 4’, ‘Twenty 20’ and ‘Runway’.

Dileep is currently shooting for Sugeeth’s ‘My Santa’, which is nearing completion. After that he will be teaming up with Nadirshah for ‘Keshu Ee Veedinte Nathan’. ‘On Air Eapen’ is likely to go on floors by the end of this year.

We had recently reported about Ishaani Krishna, the third daughter of actor Krishna Kumar, making her debut in cinema. She has bagged a role in Mammootty’s new film ‘One’, which is being directed by Santhosh Vishwanath. Ishaani plays an important character in the film. She is paired opposite Mathew Thomas of ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ and ‘Thaneer Mathan Dhinangal’ fame. Ishaani has already shot for a couple of days in Kochi and rest of her portions will be filmed in Thiruvananthapuram. Her father Krishna Kumar is also playing a crucial role in the film.

‘One’ is a political drama scripted by Bobby-Sanjay and produced by Ichais Productions. Mammootty plays the role of a Chief Minister and his character has been named as Kadakkal Chandran. He is a full-time politician who started from the grassroots level before making his way up. Along with the political angle, there also will be strong family emotions in the film. Bobby-Sanjay have taken inspiration from some real life incidents to script the film through which they are intending to show how an ideal Chief Minister should function.

‘One’ has a big supporting cast comprising of Joju George, Murali Gopy, Gayathri Arun, Balachandra Menon, Sudev Nair, Suresh Krishna, Salim Kumar, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Mamukoya, Balaji Sharma and many others.

After wrapping up schedules in Rajahmundry, Sriperumbudar and Bhopal, the team of ‘Indian 2’ has now moved to Gwalior. The film is the sequel to Shankar-Kamal Haasan team’s classic hit ‘Indian’. The sequel will see Kamal Haasan returning as the freedom-turned-vigilante Senapathi. Kamal will be appearing as a 90-year-old in the film. Interestingly, actress Kajal Aggarwal will also be seen in an aged role.

It is said that Kajal is playing a very important role as a 85-year-old woman. Prior to commencement of shoot, the actress had gone abroad for a special makeup test. Apart from that, she also underwent training in ‘Kalaripayattu’. The makers have kept all other details under the wraps.

‘Indian 2’ also stars Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor, Kajal Agarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar and Nedumudi Venu. Just like Shankar’s earlier films, ‘Indian 2’ is also being made on a huge scale. Recently, stunt director Peter Hein had choreographed a massive action block featuring over 1000 junior artists. It is reported that this stunt sequence alone cost the team a whopping Rs 40 crore. Lyca Productions is producing this mega budget film.

Despite releasing along with a biggie like Vijay’s ‘Bigil’, Karthi has emerged as a true winner. The film has reaped success both critically and commercially. Both the Tamil and the dubbed Telugu version (Khaidi) is doing well. It recently crossed the Rs 50 crore mark from its worldwide run, which is a phenomenal feat considering the fact that ‘Kaithi’ is not a regular masala entertainer with songs and stuff.

Recently, Karthi penned a note on his Twitter handle thanking everyone for making ‘Kaithi’ such a big success. He has tweeted,

I don’t know if I can thank you all enough for the amount of love and appreciation you have given for #Kaithi #Khaidi. We set out to present an exciting story and our team put their heart into it. But we never expected such an overwhelming response. I take a big bow with a heartful of gratitude! Thank you and love you all!

‘Kaithi’ ends on a cliffhanger leaving a scope for a second part. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has already narrated the second part’s story to Karthi and has asked for only 30 days of shoot. Last day, Karthi also confirmed about the sequel by tweeting,

Sreenath Bhasi, Anna Ben, Roshan Mathew and Tanvi Ram to star in Kappela

New gen actors Sreenath Bhasi, Anna Ben, Roshan Mathew, Tanvi Ram and Sudhi Koppa are coming together for a new film titled ‘Kappela’. Actor Muhammad Musthafa is making his directorial debut with this film. It is being Vishnu Venu under the banner of Kadhaas Untold. The title launch event was held last day in Kozhikode. Megastar Mammootty shared the poster online through his social media handle.

Musthafa is a regular in director Ranjith’s films. He is noted for his roles in films like ‘Paleri Manikyam’, ‘Bhavuttiyude Naamathil’ and ‘Penpattanam’. He had also won a special mention for his performance in the film ‘Ain’ at the 62nd National Film Awards.

For his directorial debut, ‘Kappela’, Musthafa has brought together an impressive team comprising of some highly promising talents. The supporting cast includes ‘Thamaasha’ fame Navas Vallikkunnu, Sudheesh, Jaffer Idukki, Vijileesh, Nisha Sarangh and many others. Musthafa has scripted the film jointly with Nikhil Vahid and Sudhas. On the technical front, Jimshi Khalidh of ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’ handles the camera, music is composed by Sushin Shyam and editing is done by Noufal Abdullah.
