Can’t remember a better Indian film on medical investigation: Bollywood filmmaker Suresh Triveni on Virus

Aashiq Abu’s medical-thriller ‘Virus’ has been rated by many as one of the best films in Malayalam this year. After a successful theatrical run, the movie is currently available on popular web streaming platform Amazon Prime. Ever since its release online, several cinephiles, non-Malayalis in particular, have been heaping praise on it. Cinema discussion platforms are still keenly exchanging views on the various aspects of the film.

Bollywood filmmaker Suresh Triveni, best known for his film ‘Tumhari Sulu’, recently got to watch ‘Virus’ and it seems like he was highly impressed by it. In his social media handle, the director has written,

Thoroughly enjoyed this film. I can’t remember a better Indian film on medical investigation. Superior stuff. So much to learn from filmmakers in Kerala.

‘Virus’ scripted by Muhsin Parari, Suhas and Sharfu is based on last year’s Nipah outbreak that shook the state of Kerala. It had a stellar star comprising of popular actors like Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Rima Kallingal, Parvathy, Soubin Shahir, Indrajith Sukumaran, Poornima Indrajith and many others. Upon its theatrical release in June, the movie won widespread acclaim for its sensible and humane portrayal of a near disaster like situation.

Kajal Aggarwal to team up with Venkat Prabhu for a web series

Director Venkat Prabhu, best known for his films like ‘Mankatha’ and ‘Chennai 600028’, is planning to make a Tamil web series with Kajal Aggarwal in the lead. The series will be streamed in popular web streaming platform Hotstar, and initial talks are already on.

As per reports, Venkat Prabhu had originally planned to shoot the script as a feature film, but later opted to make it in a series form as the subject demanded a longer run time. Reportedly, the series will have 10 episodes. The makers are planning to start shooting from August wrap it up by September.

Kajal Aggarwal was last in ‘Mersal’, in which she played one of Vijay’s three heroines. The actress the Jayam Ravi starrer ‘Comali’ gearing up for release. Venkat Prabhu meanwhile has his long delayed Party and Simbu starrer ‘Maanadu’ in various stages of production.

Yesterday marked the 18th death anniversary of Tamil actor Sivaji Ganesan. Fans, film industry personalities and politicians poured in their tributes to the legend. Malayalam cinema superstar Mohanlal paid his tribute by sharing his working experience with Sivaji Ganesan. The two had worked together in the Prathap Pothan directorial ‘Oru Yathra Mozhi’, which was released back in 1997.

Mohanlal’s tweet reads,

I was blessed and honoured to share the screen with Shri.Shivaji Ganeshan sir .More than an actor he was like a family member to me. 18 years have passed still he remains in our hearts with all those fond memories . Prayers

‘Oru Yathra Mozhi’, penned by Priyadarshan (story) and John Paul (screenplay) was also dubbed in Tamil as ‘Payanathin Mozhi’. Mohanlal and Sivaji shared great chemistry in the film. In real life as well, the two were very close to each other. Mohanlal shares good rapport with Sivaji’s son, actor Prabhu as well.

Prabhu and Mohanlal had acted together in the Priyadarshan classic ‘Kalapani’. After 23 years, the trio is reuniting for ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’, an ambitious film that is expected to hit screens next year.

Last day, the grand audio launch event of ‘Kaappaan’ was held in Chennai. Superstar Rajinikanth, director Shankar and legendary lyricist Vairamuthu were the cheif guests at the event. The movie directed by KV Anand has a stellar cast comprising of Suriya, Mohanlal, Arya and Sayyesha. All the lead actors were present for the launch.

‘Kaappaan’ has Mohanlal playing the role of Indian Prime Minister, Chandrakanth Varma, and Suriya as the high-rank National Security Guard (NSG) officer, who is in charge of the PM’s security. Interestingly, Arya plays the role of Mohanlal’s son in the film. It must be noted that, the role was originally supposed to be played by Telugu actor Allu Sirish, but he had to opt out due to other commitments.

Arya joined the team later and shot for his portions in various Indian and foreign locations. It was during the shoot of ‘Kaappaan’ that he fell in love with his co-star Sayyeshaa. The two got married in March this year. During yesterday’s audio launch event, Arya opened up about how he approached Sayyeshaa’s mother to seek her approval.

‘Kaappaan’ cast also includes Arya, Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani, Shamna Kasim and Samuthirakani in major roles. Lyca Productions is producing the movie. Besides Tamil, it is also releasing in Telugu as ‘Bandobast’. The movie is scheduled for a grand release on August 30.

Language barrier is shrinking these days in Indian cinema as more and more actors are now foraying into industries and trying to make a mark outside their home language. This trend is quite evident among Bollywood actors, who are showing high interest in being part of South Indian films, particularly the biggies in Tamil and Telugu. Shraddha Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Boman Irani, Kalki Koelchin, Neil Nitin Mukesh and many others are entering the South this year.

Latest to join the club is veteran Paresh Rawal, who has been signed to play a prominent role in Suriya’s new film ‘Soorarai Pottru’. The Sudha Kongara directorial is loosely based on the life of GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan. It is reported that Paresh Rawal plays the antagonist in the film. He essays the role of a rival airlines group chairman. Other veterans like Jackie Shroff and Mohan Babu are also part of the movie.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ is a very ambitious project scripted by Shalini Usha Nair and Sudha Kongara. Malayali actress Aparna Balamurali is paired with Suriya. The movie has camera cranked by Niketh Bommireddy, music by GV Prakash and stunts handled by Hollywood action choreographer Greg Powell. Academy award winner Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment is producing the movie jointly with Suriya’s 2D Entertainment.

The makers of ‘Margamkali’ have been releasing interesting teasers for all major characters. After the hilarious teaser featuring Hareesh Kanaran as Tik Tok Unni, the second one featuring Baiju Santosh has been released now. Baiju plays the role of Reloaded Antappan, a full-time drunkard who finds innovative ways to consume alcohol.

‘Margamkali’ is directed by Sreejith Vijayan of ‘Kuttanadan Marapapa’ fame. It stars scriptwriter-turned-actor Bibin George and Namitha Pramod in the lead roles. The movie premisses to be a full-on fun filled entertainer. Story and screenplay is penned by debutant Shashankan, while dialogues are written by lead actor Bibin himself.

’96’ fame Gouri Kishan, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Surabhi Santhosh, Shanthi Krishna, Siddique, Soumya Menon, Bindu Panicker and many others are part of the supporting cast. In the technical side, Arvind Krishna has wielded then camera and music is by Gopi Sunder. Johnkutty is handling the editing department.

‘Margamkali’ is being produced jointly by Alwin Antony and Listin Stephen under the banners of Magic Frames and Ananya Films. It is scheduled to hit screens next month.

Nani’s sports drama ‘Jersey’ is one of the biggest hits of the year in Telugu cinema. The film written and directed by Gowtham Tinnanuri had Nani playing the role of a cricketer. It is the story of a middle-aged making his return to cricket. The movie has an universal storyline and as per latest reports, it is getting remade in Tamil and Hindi.

Leading Tollywood producers Allu Aravind and Dil Raju have acquired the Hindi remake rights of the film. The Tamil rights is with actor Rana Dagguabati. Apparently, he is planning to remake the movie in Tamil with Vishnu Vishal in the lead. It must be noted that, Vishnu was a professional cricketer in his younger days. He has also played a cricketer’s role in thr hit film ‘Jeeva’. So it seems like a perfect choice for the makers.

Nelson Venkatesan of ‘Monster’ and ‘Oru Naal Koothu’ fame is said to be the front runner to direct the Tamil remake. An official announcement is expected to be made by the makers very shortly.

Shane Nigam is fresh from the success of films like ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ and ‘Ishq’. He currently has a handful of promising films in his kitty. He is starring in a new rom-com titled ‘Ullasam’. His look from the movie has been revealed by the makers. It is directed by debutant Jeevan Jojo, who was a former associate of Ranjith Sankar, Deepu Karunakaran and Jeethu Joseph. Praveen Balakrishnan has scripted the movie.

‘Ullasam’ has debutante Pavithra Lekshmi as the female lead. Others in the cast include Aju Varghese, Deepak Parambol, Basil Joseph, Ambika, Appukutty, Indrans, Nayana and Parvathy. On the technical front, Swaroop Philip is cranking the camera and Shaan Rahman is handling the music department. Johnkutty is in charge of the edits.

Jo Kaithamattam and Christy Kaithamattam are producing the movie under the banner of Kaithamattam Brothers. Final schedule of the movie is currently progressing in Ootty. First look poster will be revealed shortly.

The first single from Jayaram’s new film ‘Pattabhiraman’ was released last day in social medias. The track titled ‘Unni Ganapathiye’ is rendered by MG Sreekumar and lyrics is penned by Kaithapram. Veteran M Jayachandran has composed the song. It is a wedding song featuring Jayaram, Prem Kumar, Devan and a host of other supporting actors.

‘Pattabhiraman’ directed by Kannan Thamarakkulam is touted to be an out and out fun entertainer. Dinesh Pallath has scripted the movie. As per the makers, it is a light hearted flick that also intends to pass a social message. Jayaram plays the role of a government officer in the movie.

‘Pattabhiraman’ stars Baiju Santhosh, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Sheelu Abraham, Hareesh Kanaran, Miya George, Ramesh Pisharody, Sai Kumar and many others. Abraham Mathew is producing it under the banner of Abaam Movies.
