Malayalam film industry mourns the loss of legendary actress Sridevi

The whole of India woke up to a shocking news about the demise of legendary actress Sridevi. The 54-year-old actor passed away last night due to cardiac arrest. She along with her husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi were in Dubai to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding. Her passing away has come as a huge shock to movie lovers across the country.

Sridevi has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and Kannada languages. She was widely regarded as the first female superstar of Indian cinema. Mollywood celebrities like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Manju Warrier, Nivin Pauly, Tovino Thomas and many others mourned her passing away in social media. Sridevi was hugely popular among the Malayali audience even before she became a superstar in Bollywood.

She debuted in Malayalam in 1969 as a child actor with the movie Kumara Sambhavam. She later went on to star in numerous Malayalam movies like Theerthayathra, Aalinganam, Aa Nimisham, Satyavan Savithtri etc. She has also won a Kerala State award for best child actor for her performance in the movie ‘Poompatta’. Her last Malayalam movie was Bharathan’s Devaragam in which she was paired opposite Arvind Swamy.

Prithviraj to release the first look of Antony Varghese’s Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil

Antony Varghese, who made an impressive debut with last year’s blockbuster Angamaly Diaries (AD), will be next seen in Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil. The movie is being directed by debutant Tinu Pappachan, who is a former associate of Lijo Jose Pellissery. Scripted by Dileep Kurian, the movie is tipped to be an action thriller.

The first look poster of Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil will be officially released tomorrow by actor Prithviraj through his official Facebook page. The movie has Antony playing Jacob, a Kottayam based youngster who works in a finance company.

Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil, as the title suggests, is centred around certain incidents that occur in a single night which turns his life upside down. Vinayakan, Chemban Vinod Jose, Tito Wilson and a bunch of other actors from Angamaly Diaries are also part of this upcoming movie.

Shoot for the movie has already been wrapped up. The team is currently busy with the post production works. Girish Gangadharan is the cinematographer and Jakes Bejoy is handling the music department. Director B Unnikrishnan will be presenting the movie, which is being produced by BC Joshi. Chemban Vinod Jose and Lijo Jose Pellissery are also part of the team as co-producers.

Mohan Raja confirms doing a movie with Thalapathy Vijay!

Mohan Raja is undoubtedly one of the leading directors in Tamil cinema. The huge success of ‘Thani Oruvan’ escalated him to the top league of filmmakers in Kollywood. His last outing ‘Velaikkaran’ with Sivakarthikeyan and Fahadh Faasil was also a successful affair at the box office. Last year, during the promotions of Velaikkaran, Mohan Raja had said that he is working on a script for Thalapathy Vijay and might narrate it to him soon.

Recently, in a students cultural event, the director confirmed that he is indeed teaming up with Vijay. It might be for the actor’s 63rd or 64th film. Mohan Raja has previously worked with Vijay in 2011. He made the mass entertainer ‘Velayudham’ with Vijay in the lead. The movie which was inspired by Nagarjuna’s Telugu flick ‘Azad’, emerged as a box office inspite of getting mixed reviews hit from the critics.

A Vijay-Mohan Rajan film is something very exciting to wait for as the director knows the pulse of the audience. Almost all his movies have been commercially successful. Post Thani Oruvan, he is determined to make a meaningful movies that also pass a message to the society.

While his Thani Oruvan was about medical mafia, Velaikaaran dealt with the issue of food adulteration and how a slum dweller fights against the corporates. It remains to be seen what topic Mohan Raja has come up with for such a big star like Vijay. Let’s wait for an official announcement.

Vijay, meanwhile, is busy shooting for his next movie with AR Murugadoss (Vijay 62). The movie has Keerthy Suresh playing the female lead and AR Rahman scoring the music. Sun Pictures is producing this movie, slated for a Diwali release in November.

Feeling ecstatic and edgy about the release of Poomaram: Kalidas Jayaram

The long wait for Kalidas Jayaram’s Poomaram is finally coming to an end. The movie is eagerly awaited by the Malayali audience for it has been in the making for nearly two years. Shoot commenced in 2016 and was supposed to hit screens by February last year. But it kept delaying due to some unknown reasons. The movie’s long delay is now a topic of trolls in social medias.

After multiple postponing, Poomaram, directed by Abrid Shine, is all set for a wide release on March 9. Posters and flex boards announcing the release have already come up in various parts of the state. Kalias shared a few photos in his Facebook page. He also wrote that he is feeling both ecstatic and edgy about the release.

Kalidas has already made his Tamil debut with the comic caper ‘Meenkuzhambum Manpaanayum’, which was released in 2016. But Poomaram is his first Malayalam movie as a lead actor and it is natural for the youngster to feel nervous as the release date is nearing.

Despite being under the wraps for such long time, Poomaram is still remembered by the public thanks to the trolls and the two hit tracks – ‘Njanum Njanumentalum’ and ‘Kadavathoru Thoni’. The movie promises to be a campus based youthful entertainer. It is jointly produced by Dr Paul Varghese and director Abrid Shine under the banner of Dr Paul’s Entertainment. Central Pictures will be releasing the movie in Kerala.

After Kannum Kannum Kollai Adithaal, Dulquer to shoot for his Hindi movie The Zoya Factor!

Dulquer Salmaan is currently shooting in Chennai for his upcoming Tamil movie ‘Kannum Kannum Kollai Adithaal’ (KKKA). This romantic flick directed by debutant Desingh Periyasamy has Ritu Varma paired opposite Dulquer. Shoot for the movie is expected to be wrapped up by the end of April.

After the completion of KKKA, Dulquer will be joining the sets of his upcoming Hindi movie ‘Zoya Factor’. Reportedly, Dulquer will be playing the lead along with Sonam Kapoor in this big screen adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s 2008 novel of the same name.

The novel revolves around a PR executive Zoya Singh Solanki, who was born on the exact moment when Indian had lifted the 1983 World Cup. Zoya is considered as a lucky charm by the Indian team as well as the media. But the team’s captain doesn’t believe in luck and relies on performance. Zoya keeps clashing with the Indian skipper, and what follows is a love-hate relationship. If reports are to be believed, Dulquer is playing the skipper’s role and he is planning to take up basic coaching in cricket for the role.

The rights to adapt the novel have been bagged by Aarti and Pooja Shetty and Abhishek Sharma will be directing the movie. The official announcement of Zoya Factor with more details regarding its cast and crew is expected to be made very soon.

We had recently reported about ‘Angamaly Diaries’ fame Sarath Kumar bagging a role in Mani Ratnam’s upcoming movie Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (CCV). This is his second Tamil film after Sandakozhi 2 and the actor is all excited about it. In a recent interview to TOI, Sarath opened up on how he landed a role in Mani Ratnam’s movie.

Apparently, the legendary filmmaker had watched Sarath’s performance in Angamaly Diaries and was mighty impressed by it. Sarath was called upon for a screen test and that’s how he bagged the role. He didn’t reveal more details about his role expect for the fact that it’s a very serious one which offers him good scope for performance.

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam has already gone on floors and Sarath will be joining the team by the second week of March. The movie has a huge star cast with lead roles played by Arvind Swamy, Vijay Sethupathi, Simbu, Arun Vijay, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jyothika and Aishwarya Rajesh. It is said to be a socio-political drama centred around a nuclear power plant. Lyca Productions is producing this movie on a first copy basis along with Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies.

1971 Beyond Borders Telugu version titled Yudhabhoomi

Mohanlal and director Major Ravi have teamed up for a handful of movies based on military operations. Their last outing 1971 Beyond Borders was released in April last year amidst fair share of expectations. But the movie failed to live up to that and ended up as a disappointing affair at the box office.

1971 Beyond Borders is now getting dubbed in Telugu. The Telugu version has been titled as Yudhabhoomi. The movie was initially titled as 1971: Bharata Sarihaddu but got changed due to some unknown reasons. Along with Mohanlal, the presence of a promising young star like Allu Sirish has clearly inspired the makers to dub the movie in Telugu.

1971 Beyond Borders is actually the fourth in the Major Mahadevan series. Mohanlal appears in a dual role in the movie, as Major Mahadevan and his father Sahadevan. The movie based on the 1971 Indo-Pak war features a pan-Indian star cast. Allu Sirish essays a pivotal role as a battle tank commander while Srushti Dange plays his romantic interest.

Bollywood actor Arunoday Singh plays another major role as the Pakistan army officer Lieutenant colonel Muhammed Akhram Raja. Asha Sarath, Priyanka Agarwal, Neha Khan, Zoya Zayed Khan and many other noted actors are also part of the cast.

If reports are to be beloved, apart from a Telugu version, the movie will also be dubbed and released in Tamil language. Official announcement regarding the release dates of both the versions is expected to be made very soon.

Nivin Pauly’s first outing of the year Hey Jude was released earlier this month (February 2) and opened to positive reviews from the critics. Even as the movie is nearing one month of successful theatrical run, it continues to get good response from the audience. Word of mouth has been extremely positive for the Shyamaprasad directorial and that is reflecting in the audience count in theatres.

The makers have released a new song video through their official Facebook page. The song titled ‘Rock Rock’ is an English track which comes at a crucial juncture in the movie. Composer Ouseppachan also features in the song video along with the lead actors Nivin and Trisha. Interestingly, this song is penned by director Shyamaprasad himself. Sayanora Philip, who dubbed for Trisha in the movie, has rendered this song as well.

Hey Jude scripted by newcomers Nirmal Sahadev and George Kanatt is a simple feel good entertainer. It is basically a coming-of-age story of Jude, an oddball. How love and understanding transforms Jude after befriending with his neighbor Crystal and her father Sebastian, a neuropsychologist, forms the crux of the story.

Nivin Pauly as the differently abled Jude has given his career best performance. Though the movie has only a handful of characters, all of them – Siddique, Trisha, Vijay Menon and Neena Kurup – have given a performance worth remembering for a long time. Anil Kumar has produced the movie under the banner of Ambalakkara Global Films.

Rajinikanth’s Kaala is currently in the post production stage. As announced earlier, the makers are working towards a smooth release on on April 27. The promotions will officially kick-start on March 1 with the much awaited teaser release. The makers announced the teaser release date with a stylish new poster featuring Thalaivar himself in his uber cool salt and pepper look.

Kaala is a gangster flick based in the Mumbai underworld. The movie marks Rajinikanth’s reunion with director Pa Ranjith after Kabali. Kaala is about a guy from Tirunelveli, who runs away in his childhood to Mumbai to become a powerful don living in the slums. Rajinikanth plays this character, Kaala, who heads the Tamil community in the slums of Dharavi.

The movie has a strong supporting cast which includes several noted actors from North India. Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead, but she is not paired opposite Rajinikanth. Multiple national award winner Nana Patekar is essaying a pivotal role in the movie. Jackie Shroff, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Sayaji Shinde, Sakshi Agarwal, Samuthirakani, Sukanya, Ramesh Thilak and Sampath Raj are also part of the supporting cast.

Rajinikanth’s son-in-law and actor Dhanush is producing Kaala under his banner Wunderbar Films Pvt Ltd. Most of the technical crew of Kabali have been retained for Kaala, with only editor Sreekar Prasad as the new addition. Pa Ranjith’s regular composer Santhosh Narayanan is handling the music department.

Ajay Devgn, Nagarjuna and Mahesh Babu to star alongside Mohanlal in Randamoozham?

Randamoozham aka The Mahabharatha has been in the news ever since it was announced last year. VA Shrikumar Menon will be directing this film which is said to the most expensive Indian movie ever. UAE based Indian businessman Dr BR Shetty is investing a whopping Rs 1000 crores for this epic project.

The Mahabharata is the official adaptation of legendary writer MT Vasudevan Nair’s novel Randamoozham, which in turn is based on the Indian epic Mahabharata. Mohanlal has already been confirmed to play the central character of Bheema in this movie. The makers had informed that several leading actors from other industries will be part of this movie.

Latest reports suggest that leading non-Malayali stars like Ajay Devgn, Nagarjuna and Mahesh Babu have been approached for the movie. Telugu superstar Nagarjuna had earlier confirmed confirmed having talks with the makers, while he was not sure how long it will take for the things to finalise.

He had said, “I was asked by writer Vasudevan Nair to play Karna’s role in the movie. I’m aware of Shrikumar’s efforts to make the movie for the past four years and I got this offer, two years ago. Recently, Vasudevan asked me once again for my dates. I told him I will be a part of the movie if my character is also given enough importance and the writer said, it will be a prominent role. I’m waiting for the project to shape up completely and then I can share more details about it.”

An official launch event, where details regarding the whole cast and crew would be revealed, is expected to be held sometime by the end of this year. This epic movie will be filmed in two parts and will be made as a multilingual in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and English. The makers are planning to commence shoot by January, next year. It would have a worldwide release in 2020. As per the makers, the second part of the movie would be released from 90 days of the first part.
