Ashwin Kumar joins Prithviraj’s Detroit Crossing

Detroit Crossing starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead is all set to go floors by June. The movie, directed by debutant Nirmal Sahadev stars Mamta Mohandas as the female lead. It is touted to be dark neo-noir thriller.

The movie is set in Detroit, Michigan and will showcase the lives of the immigrant community. It will be a neo-noir kind of movie with the city having a lot of importance in the plot. Since the movie is based on Tamil street gangs, it will feature some prominent actors like Ashwin Kumar and Sampath Raj in pivotal roles.

Ashwin Kumar, made his debut in Malayalam last year through Nivin Pauly’s Jacobinte Swargarajyam. The actor was last seen in a pivotal role in the Tamil whodunit thriller Dhuruvangal Pathinaru aka D16.

Ashwin Kumar is all excited about joining the team of Detroit Crossing. In a recent interview to Times Of India, he is quoted saying,

“It is an interesting role. The film is about Tamil gangs in Detroit, which is why Tamil actor Sampath and I were roped in. There is a lot of Tamil influence in the film. I’m glad I’m getting to act with big league actors right at the beginning of my career.”

Prithviraj will be seen as a Tamil street gang member in the movie, which is inspired by real-life situations. It is a crime drama in which Prithviraj will be seen in a grey shaded role. Mamta is playing an equally important role, a strong and mature character that has several shades and layers.

Reportedly, Detroit Crossing will have both the English and Malayalam versions. The makers are in talks for releasing the English version in the US. The Malayalam version will have another title that will be announced soon.

Detroit Crossing will have most of its crew from the US. Cinematography will be handled by Lukasz Pruchnik who previously worked in Fahadh Faasil’s Monsoon Mangoes. Jakes Bejoy has been roped in to handle the music department. The movie is being produced by the Anand Kumar Payyanur under the banner of Yes Cinema Company.

Superstar Mohanlal has some highly exciting projects waiting in the pipeline. Post the record breaking success of Pulimurugan, Mohanlal has been very selective and most of his upcoming movies are big budget entertainers that have the potential to set the cash registers ringing.

Latest we hear is that Mohanlal will be teaming up with veteran filmmaker Joshiy for a mass entertainer speculated to be titled as Wayanadan Thamban. Reportedly, Pulimurugan scribe Udhayakrishna will be scripting this movie. The reports are yet to be confirmed but if such a project materializes, several existing records will be put at stake.

Joshiy, one of the most senior most directors in Mollywood, has teamed up with Mohanlal in the past to script many blockbusters like No 20 Madras Mail, Naran, Twenty 20, Christian Brothers etc. However, their last two movies- Lokpal and Laila O Lala were collosal failures.

Udhayakrishna is currently working on Mammootty’s upcoming movie with Rajadhiraja fame Ajai Vasudev. After that he will be scripting another Mammootty starrer Raja 2, Pokkiriraja’s spin off directed by Vysakh.

Mohanlal, meanwhile is busy shooting for B Unnikrishnan’s Villain. He will join the sets of Odiyan, a big budget fantasy drama, by the end of May. Ad filmmaker VA Shrikumar Menon is helming this movie scripted by National award winner Harikrishnan.

Malayalam cinema’s biggest ever blockbuster, Pulimurugan’s 3D version is gearing up for release. The movie will have it’s first screening on April 12, Wednesday at 5.00 PM in Angamaly Adlux Convention Center.

The makers are aiming to register a new Guinness record for the largest 3D movie screening by toppling the existing record of Hollywood movie Men in Black 3. MIB 3 was viewed by 6,819 fans at Berlin’s O2 World, while the preview show in Angamaly Adlux Convention Center will be screened to nearly 20,000 viewers.

Pulimurugan released on October 7, scripted several new feats in the history of Malayalam cinema. The movie directed by Vysakh shattered several box office records. It became the first Malayalam movie to cross the 100 crore mark and registered a worldwide business of over Rs 150 crores.

Mohanlal at the age of 56, performed stunts that even the younger generation of actors would not dare to do. He played the title role of Murugan, a wild hunter known in the locality of Puliyoor to hunt down man eating tigers. Audience, irrespective of age groups, thronged to the theatres in large numbers to watch Mohanlal in all his glory on big screen.

The Pulimurugan team screened the trailer of Pulimurugan 3D version during the 150 days success celebration held in Kochi recently. The movie had some of the best VFX and CG works. The team’s efforts were widely appreciated for pulling it off within the budget constraints in Mollywood. So doubling it with the 3D technology will be worth experiencing from the big screen.

The countdown for the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has started. We are just three weeks away from the most awaited Indian movie of the year. This epic action drama is scheduled to hit screens worldwide on April 28.

According to certain reports, the movie will be releasing in around 6500 theatres all over India. We hear that Baahubali 2 will be released in a 315 theatres in Kerala. United Global Media, who also distributed the previous part, is releasing the movie in Kerala.

Megastar Mammootty’s recent blockbuster The Great Father currently holds the record for the highest first day grosser in Kerala. Going by the humongous hype Baahubali 2 certainly has the potential to register a new record for the initial day collections in Kerala.

This SS Rajamouli directorial is a product of unprecedented hype for an Indian movie. Massive success of the first part, released in 2015, and the slew of unanswered questions raised the expectations for the sequel.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is expected to touch the 1000 crore mark and become the first ever Indian movie to do so. It must be remembered that the movie has already registered a pre release business of over 500 crores through distribution, satellite, audio and video rights. The movie will have a simultaneous release in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.

This big budget action drama is produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under the banner of Arka Works.

Mohanlal’s much awaited 1971 Beyond Borders was released on April 7, Friday. The movie, directed by Major Ravi is the fourth in the Major Mahadevan series.

1971 Beyond Borders is based on the 1971 Indo- Pak war and has a huge star cast. Priyanka Agarwal who played the part of Pakistani Lieutenant Colonel Rana Sharif’s wife is overwhelmed to be part of a Mohanlal movie.

In a recent interview to Deccan Chronicle, she is quoted saying, “I was overwhelmed when I got the call to act in a film with Lal sir. But sadly, we had no combination scenes. Now I am looking forward to get more roles in Malayalam as well as Telugu. I am getting many offers.”

Incidentally, Priyanka Agarwal first faced camera in Malayalam along with Mohanlal in an ad film. She was later recommended by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan for the role in 1971 Beyond Borders. Priyanka played the wife of Bollywood actor Arunoday Singh’s character. She is seen in two different looks in the movie, one in her younger days and the other as a 65 year old.

1971 Beyond Borders, produced by Haneef Muhammed under the banner Red Rose Creations also starred Telugu actor Allu Sirish, Srushti Dange, Priyanka Agarwal and Zoya Zayed Khan in supporting roles.

Dulquer Salmaan’s CIA is one of the most awaited Malayalam movies of the year. The movie, directed by Amal Neerad, is gearing up for release and is expected to hit screens next month.

The team released a new poster in their official Facebook page. Dulquer and Soubin Shahir feature in the poster with a football court in the backdrop. CIA, written by Shibin Francis is a story about Aji Mathew, a Pala based youngster who travels to US in pursuit of his girlfriend. A major portion of the movie is set in the US.

From the posters, teaser and tidbits from sources close to the unit, we can assure you that CIA will have equal doses of romance, heroism, politics and action. It will be a mass entertainer with Amal Neerad’s touch of stylish filmmaking. Dulquer commands a huge fan following and when the two join, it is certain to set the box office on fire. The movie is expected to set a new record in the opening day collections.

Debutante Karthika Muraleedharan is playing the female lead. Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothen, John Vijay and Jinu Joseph are also part of the cast.

Amal Neerad roped in Mark Chavarria, the action choreographer of Hollywood movies like Inception, Pearl Harbour, Terminator and Logan to choreograph stunts in CIA.

Gopi Sunder is composing the songs and background score for the movie, produced by Amal Neerad’s own banner Amal Neerad Productions.

The National film awards jury headed by director Priyadarshan has been getting a lot of flak from all corners for some of their choices. Akshay Kumar winning the National award for best actor took many by surprise. Most people alleged that Akshay Kumar’s proximity with director Priyadarshan helped him in bagging the prestigious award.

Filmmakers like Hansal Mehta, AR Murugadoss and many others have questioned the jury’s choices and alleged nepotism. Jury chairperson Priyadarshan in a recent interview said that people who allege that the jury was biased would not have even seen those movies that won the awards.

Priyadarshan is quoted saying, “One thing I noticed was that people who are criticising the awards have never seen the films that won the awards. Regional films sweeped the awards and Marathi and Bengali cinema dominated. Director AR Murugadoss commented that the jury was biased and I don’t think he has seen any film that had won an award. How can he make such a comment without viewing these movies?”

The jury’s decision to snub some marvellous performances by actors like Manoj Bajpai (Aligarh), Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Raman Raghav 2.0) and Aamir Khan (Dangal) were questioned by many. When quizzed about why Aamir Khan was not considered, Priyadarshan gave a bizarre justification. He said that Aamir wouldn’t personally accept the award so why spoil it for some other actor who stood as good a chance of winning the award.

The veteran filmmaker also asked why people didn’t question about Amitabh Bachchan winning the National award when Ramesh Sippy was the jury chairman. Priyadarshan clarified that the jury’s decision was collective and not the chairman’s decision alone.

Darwinte Parinamam fame Hannah Reji Koshy, has played the female lead in the movie. Aju Varghese, Deepak Parambol, Hareesh Kanaran, Vijayaraghavan, Janardhanan, Indrans, Dileesh Pothen and Alencier Ley Lopez will be seen in supporting characters.

Niranjana is playing the role of Mia, a Plus Two student in the movie. In a recent interview she shared about her experience working with Mammootty. She is quoted staying, “We had real fun during the film’s shoot in Goa. The climax was shot there — an isolated area with few people and no boats. There we got a chance to interact with each other well. Mammootty uncle cracked a lot of jokes and we used to laugh out loud.”

Puthan Panam is slated to hit screens for this Vishu season on March 12. The movie has high expectations among the audience as it marks the teaming up of ace filmmaker Ranjith with Mammootty.
