Puthan Panam Review : A thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience

The Narendra Modi headed Indian government’s sudden demonetisation move had large-scale effects on the day to day lives of both the upper class and the commoners. Even today, people are striving hard to cope up with the situation. Mammootty-Ranjith team’s latest outing Puthan Panam explores the aftermath of the demonetisation move in our society.

The central government implements the demonetisation move by withdrawing the higher denomination notes on November 9 at exactly 8 PM. A few hours prior to that, ex-Minister Chandrabanu (Sai Kumar) pays a hefty sum of Rs 25 crores to his former business partner Nithyananda Shenoy (Mammootty). With the withdrawal of these notes, Nithyananda Shenoy is helpless as he is unable to use this money. Rest of the movie follows Shenoy’s chase behind Chandrabanu and the subsequent incidents.

In Mollywood, there are only a very few filmmakers who can deliver quality outputs with both class and mass movies, and Ranjith is one among them. The ace filmmaker has amazed us several times with his powerful writing. Through Puthan Panam, Ranjith and Mammootty have once again delivered a movie that has equal doses of both class and mass.

Mammootty is in great form as Nithyananda Shenoy. His terrifically enunciated Kasargod slang and his famed ability to portray layered characters is on display once again in Puthan Panam. Teenager Swaraj has given a wonderful performance as Muthu. He shares almost equal screentime with Mammootty but the boy showed no signs of nervousness.

Other supporting actors including Siddique, Baiju, Mamukoya, Kanaran Harish, Indrans, Ineya, Sheelu Abraham, Ganapathi, Niranjana Anoop, Vishak Nair among others did justice to their roles.

Om Prakash’s camera works are commendable. The tone used in the movie is quite unique and fresh. They have used a colour mix pattern of the old and new rupee notes.

Shaan Rahman’s songs jell well with the movie’s narrative and pace. The song used during the movie’s beginning was awesome. Background score is handled by Achu Rajamani and he has succeeded in creating a mass impact in several scenes. If utilized properly, Achu can be a big asset for the Malayalam film industry.

Puthan Panam is certainly the best Mammootty starrer in recent times. The veteran actor is famous for his impeccable prowess in bringing life to characters with a distinct slang and mannerisms. With Nithyananda Shenoy, Mammootty has added one more to that glorious list. Even though the forced fight scenes raise a few eyebrows, they do not affect the totality of the movie.

Despite being a movie that can be thoroughly enjoyed by audience of all age groups, the censor board’s decision to certify Puthan Panam with an A certificate is seriously questionable. Remember, we have a host of movies stuffed with double meaning jokes and misogyny, releasing every Friday with a clean U certificate.

Biju Menon’s next with scenarist turned director Ranjan Pramod’s Rakshadikari Baiju Oppu has finally got a release date. The movie will hit screens all over Kerala on April 21, Friday.

Darwinte Parinamam fame Hannah Reji Koshy will be seen as the female lead in the movie. Aju Varghese, Deepak Parambol, Hareesh Kanaran, Vijayaraghavan, Janardhanan, Indrans, Dileesh Pothen and Alencier Ley Lopez have played supporting characters.

Biju Menon is playing the role of an irrigation department employee in the movie. He is an ordinary man, who spends his life travelling from his village to work in the city and back. It’s not a larger than life role, but one who shows his heroism in subtle ways. He doesn’t go out of his way to help people or be good, but somehow ends up doing a heroic deed. The movie’s trailer, released has created a buzz in social medias. Audience can be assured of another clean feel good entertainer from Biju Menon.

Raashi Khanna plays a baddie in Mohanlal’s Villain

Tollywood actress Raashi Khanna is making her Malayalam debut through B Unnikrishnan’s upcoming movie Villain starring Mohanlal in the lead. The actress will be seen as a police officer in the movie.

Villain is touted to be a crime thriller with Mohanlal playing the role of Mathew Manjooran, an ex-cop. We hear that Raashi Khanna’s character will have negative shades, locking horns with Mohanlal. The pretty actress made her entry to cinema through the critically acclaimed Bollywood movie Madras Cafe, where she played John Abraham’s wife.

Shoot for Villain is currently progressing in Ernakulam. The first schedule was wrapped last month in Trivandrum, where Rashi Khanna was seen shooting alongside Mohanlal. The movie has an ensemble star cast in Manju Warrier, Vishal, Srikanth and Hansika Motwani.

Villain is the first Malayalam movie to be shot completely in 8K resolution. Acclaimed cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa is cranking the camera. An international company from Poland have been roped in to handle the visual effects. Peter Hein will choreograph the stunts along with Stunt Silva. Sai Pallavi to make her Tamil debut with AL Vijay movie

Sai Pallavi, who became an overnight sensation in the south Indian film industry with Premam, will be making her Tamil debut with director AL Vijay’s next. We had earlier reported about director Vijay remaking Malayalam blockbuster movie Charlie in Tamil with Madhavan in the lead. Sai Pallavi was roped in to reprise Parvathy’s role from the original. But, we now hear that the two will be teaming for another fresh movie before working on the remake of Charlie.

In a recent interview to the Times of India, Vijay is quoted saying, “Yes, I am doing a film with Sai, but can’t speak about it yet. I should have more details about it in place in another week’s time.”

Sai Pallavi is currently busy acting in her Telugu debut movie Fidha. The movie is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kammula and stars Varun Tej as the hero.

The actress, who is of Tamil origin, enjoys a huge fan following even before making her debut in Kollywood. She was initially cast for Mani Ratnam’s Kaatru Veliyidai but was later replaced by Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari.
