Prithviraj Sukumaran joins Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

It was reported earlier that Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff will be teaming up for the first time for ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’, an actioner directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has now joined the cast. The official announcement was made by releasing a character poster introducing him as Kabir.

Prithviraj shared the poster and wrote in social media that he is ‘thrilled to be part of this amazing squad’. Similarly, Akshay Kumar also tweeted,

The #BadeMiyanChoteMiyan family just got bigger and how!
Welcome on board this crazy action rollercoaster, @PrithviOfficial .

Tiger Shroff welcomed Prithviraj by tweeting,

Prithviraj is said to be playing the villain role in ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’. Interestingly, his last Hindi film ‘Naam Shabana’ also had him in a negative role. Akshay Kumar was part of that film as well. Prithviraj is also playing the antagonist in the upcoming multilingual ‘Salaar’, opposite Prabhas. ‘KGF’ fame Prabhas is directing it. Prithviraj was also in talks for the upcoming Vijay-Lokesh film ‘Thalapathy 67’, but he could not sign it due to prior commitments.

Gold Review: Alphonse Puthren falters big time in his comeback

Stars making a comeback after a hiatus and people celebrating it is a common thing in Indian cinema. But is not often that a filmmaker’s comeback is so eagerly awaited. Alphonse Puthren’s return, seven years after he made the sensational ‘Premam’, meant the expectations for his latest, ‘Gold’, were sky-high. On top of that, the director managed to pique the right amount of curiosity among those waiting for the film. Nothing about the plot was revealed, there were hardly any promo materials, even those part of the cast didn’t know much about the film. There was no reason for ‘Gold’ to fail. There’s Alphonse Puthren at the helm, there’s Prithviraj, there’s Nayanthara and a bandwagon of other stars. But yet…

‘Gold’ has Prithviraj playing Joshiy, a mobile shop owner, who lives with his mother. One fine day, Joshiy finds an abandoned vehicle in front of his house. In his own words it’s a ‘treasure’. How it reached there, who all are associated with it, what Joshiy does with it… is what the film is about. It’s a quirky storyline for a comedy film. It’s more in the space of Alphonse’s debut film ‘Neram’. He could have a blast with it. But, the film is unnecessarily stretched to an exhausting runtime of 165 minutes.

Baburaj, Shammy Thilakan, and Lalu Alex are the only others who does something noticeable. Nayanthara gets one of the weakest role of her career. It would be safe to call it an extended cameo. Sharafudheen, Vinay Forrt, Sharath Saxena, Chemban Vinod Jose, Soubin Shahir… so many actors come and go, but hardly anyone make an impression.

Most of what Alphonse has done in ‘Gold’ seems like an afterthought. It is evident that he has tried desperately hard to cover the shallowness in the film with his technical wizardry. They were fascinating in ‘Premam’, but not here, where it’s overdone. It was sad to see a filmmaker who made people watch his last film multiple times in theatre, failing to keep them engaged this time. If ‘Gold’ had a quality output and became a huge hit, all the credits would’ve gone to Alphonse, so it’s only ideal that the director takes the criticisms on him and delivers better the next time around.

Monica O My Darling Review: A quirky, rollercoaster ride

Monica O My Darling Review: A quirky, rollercoaster ride

After the supremely entertaining ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota’, director Vasan Bala is back with another quirky genre film. ‘Monica O My Darling’, streaming on Netflix, is a neo-noir comic thriller that follows all the genre rules to the T. It is witty, well shot and neatly performed.

Adapted from the 1989 Japanese novel Burutasu No Shinzou by Keigo Higashino, ‘Monica O My Darling’ is set around a robot manufacturing company and a few of its employees. When the film begins, Jayant Arkhedkar, played by Rajkummar Rao, has been appointed to the Board of Directors, much to the anger of a few from the organisation. Jayant, who is engaged to his boss’ daughter, also has a secret affair with Monica (Huma Qureshi), the boss’ secretary. When she tells him about her pregnancy, Jayant loses it. He soon learns that he is not alone in this shitstorm. Along with some unlikely allies, they plan a perfect murder to erase Monica for once and all, but wait… It’s a dark comedy, things don’t always go as per plans.

Vasan Bala gets the neo-noir tropes right. Be it the antihero protagonist, or the ‘killer’ femme fatale, murders, conspiracies, twists, turns and even snakes. There are multiple characters, different storylines, but nothing confusing. The writing is coherent, comprehensive and compact. Rajkummar Rao and Huma Qureshi deliver solid performances, while Radhika Apte impresses in an extended cameo.

The obvious comparison for ‘Monica O My Darling’ will be ‘Andhadhun’. But even Vasan Bala might be aware that his film is not right up there with his mentor Sriram Raghavan’s classic. All said, ‘Monica…’ is still a worthy addition to the list of quality dark comedies in Indian cinema.

Bhediya Review: Varun Dhawan’s werewolf film is fun and entertaining

Bhediya Review: Varun Dhawan’s werewolf film is fun and entertaining

For sometime now, Bollywood has been struggling hard to get the right mix for a commercial entertainer. It’s either remakes or biopics. There’s a clear lack of fresh ideas. Varun Dhawan’s latest film ‘Bhediya’ doesn’t exactly have original idea. Werewolf is subject of many stories throughout the world, but the concept is new to Indian cinema audience. And with the right mix of fun, scares and an important social message, ‘Bhediya’ succeeds.

A werewolf is a person who changes for periods of time into a wolf, typically when there is a full moon. According to some legends, werewolves are people who morph into vicious, powerful wolves. Others are a mutant combination of human and wolf.

In ‘Bhediya, Varun Dhawan’s character Bhaskar and his cousin brother visit a small town in Arunachal Pradesh, as part of a development project to construct roads in the area. One fateful night, Bhaskar is by a wolf in the forest. From the next day, he starts experiencing changes within him. He experiences a heightened sense of smell and hearing, whilst also communicating with animals. Mysterious killings happen in the locality and it’s not soon before Bhaskar and his acquaintances realise that he’s behind the killings.

Varun Dhawan’s lively performance and his crackling chemistry with Abhishek Banerjee and Neli Paalin Kabak, who plays Jomin, works wonderfully to make ‘Bhediya’ a thoroughly entertaining film. Kriti Sanon as the female lead also gets her moments, and it was heartening to see that she was not there just for the sake of being Varun’s pair.

The climax stretch is wonderfully staged and shot, with some really good VFX work. It reminds one of those Disney films as it gets emotional towards the end. The mid-credit scene connecting it to the Stree-verse is the icing on the cake, and makes it an exciting franchise to look forward to.

Benny P Nayarambalam scripts Anna Ben’s next, Anchu Centum Seleenayum

Though the Anna Ben and Benny P Nayarambalam have acted together in ‘Saras’, this is the first time Anna is acting in her father’s script. The excited actress wrote in her social media handle,

Mani Ratnam, Gautham Vasudev Menon, actors Vikram Prabhu, Sivakumar, Aishwarya Rajinikanth, Ashok Selvan, Aadhi and Nikki Galrani were some of the celebrities spotted at the wedding.

Gautham Karthik and Manjima Mohan made their relationship public only recently. The two have been together for three years. They
became friends when they worked together in Devarattam in 2019. While announcing their relationship, both the actors took to social media to pen beautiful, heartfelt notes. Gautham wrote,

What happens when the right person comes into your life? Most people would say that you would be filled with love the moment you set your eyes on them, your stomach will feel like there are butterflies flying around inside your heart would sing for joy etc…etc…

Manjima Mohan, our journey has been different for sure, lol. We started by always pranking eachother, always bickering and arguing about the silliest of things. Even our friends couldn’t stand our arguments.
But little did I know that you were creating a bond, a beautiful bond between us.
I decided to name this bond as ‘friendship’ at first.
But it was stronger than that…
You kept growing it…
I named it as ‘best-friends’.
But it grew stronger than that too…
You kept nurturing it daily…
You grew it stronger and stronger day by day.
You’ve made ME stronger and stronger day by day than I ever believed I possibly could be.
You stood by my side when I was at my worst, never losing faith in who I could be.
You always push me forward in life, never letting me give up, always staying positive for me, never letting me doubt my self or my self worth.
I have a peace in my heart now that I’ve never felt before, and that’s all because of what you have nourished in my life.
I don’t believe that even the word ‘Love’ is sufficient to describe the bond you have created for us.
I know that with you by my side, I can face anything that life can throw at me.
I’m extremely greatful that you have chosen to share this special bond with me my love.
Now let me do my part by making sure I earn your love every day and nurture and grow this bond till the very end!
I love you with all of my heart!
I can’t wait for us to start our journey together as one!

Manjima’s post reads,

Three years ago when I was completely lost you came into my life like a guardian angel. You changed my perspective on life and helped me realize how blessed I am!!
Every time I feel like a complete mess, you pull me up. You taught me to accept my flaws and to be myself more often.
And the best thing I love about you is how much you love me for who I am!
You are and will always be my favorite everything
