Laal Singh Chaddha Review: A heartwarming tale of love and hope

Remakes are not easy. And what if it’s a remake of world renowned classic. With ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, Aamir Khan has attempted one such daring move. It is the official adaptation of the the multiple Oscar winner ‘Forrest Gump’ starring Tom Hanks in the titular role. First things first, it would be unfair to compare both these films. ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is a rooted adaptation that has its own identity.

The film begins with Laal (Aamir Khan) narrating his life to his fellow passengers in train. Through his life journey, we see major events in India’s history unfolding, like Operation Blue Star, Assassination of Indira Gandhi, Anti-Sikh riots, Babri Masjid demolition and the Kargil War. There are also passing mentioning of events like the Mumbai blasts, Mandal Commision reports, Anna Hazare’s hunger strike etc.

Laal is a dim-witted man who has a great understanding of emotions. Through his perspective, the film speaks of the absurdity of hate, and the power of religion to corrupt. It emphasises on the importance of love and hope. Though Aamir Khan comes up with a caricaturish performance, the actor nails it during the emotional moments, particularly in the climax. Mona Singh as his mother is easily the best performer in the film.

Naga Chaitanya’s Bala is also caricaturish like Laal but the actor manages to sell it as an endearing and likeable character. Kareena Kapoor as Rupa gets a proper arc in the film and her character goes through a different journey as compared to the original. The actress does her part effectively.

With a winning story, good performances and some lovely music by Pritam, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has all the ingredients of a feel-good film. A film that speaks volumes about love doesn’t deserve so much hate.

Thallumaala Review: A thoroughly entertaining fun ride

Thallumaala Review: A thoroughly entertaining fun ride

It is not often that you come across a film in Malayalam that’s as ambitious as Thallumaala. The ambitiousness is not in terms of the scale or budget. It’s a first-of-its-kind attempt with regards to how the film has been catered to mainly the 2K crowd. The whole film is designed somewhat like an Insta reel. First, you get a teaser of what’s about to come and then the actual show. It’s easy to dismiss a film like ‘Thallumaala’ as just another ‘style over substance’ outing. But here, the style has a purpose. There’s a lot of thought that has gone behind the shot divisions and edits. It’s unique, zangy and entertaining.

‘Thallumaala’ is rightly titled ‘Ballad of Brawls’ in English. The film is basically about the various encounters of Wasim (Tovino) and his gang of friends. They’re the typical angry young men (not the Amitabh Bachchan-kind). Pitted against them is Reji (Shine Tom Chacko) and his bunch. Rage and ego runs in their blood, and all hell will lose even with the slightest of provocations. Take for example, this scene where a major fight breaks out in a mosque just because two young men stare at each other.

‘Thallumaala’ has a rather shallow plot but writers Muhsin Parari and Ashraf Hamza try to mask it with a non-linear screenplay. Though it might appear too hazy and complex in the beginning, things get better as the narrative progresses. The film has an uniqueness stamped all over it, be it the scene staging, cinematography, lighting or the stylized edits. Best of all is the music and fights. The film has several stunt scenes but the most memorable among them is the two major set pieces, one inside the theatre and the other at a wedding venue. These fights are mindblowingly well choreographed and will be spoken about for long.

Tovino is perfectly suited for Manavalan Wasim’s role and the actor has given his best for it. It is probably the first time in his career that the actor has attempted to dance and it has come out quite well. Similarly his performance in the fight scenes is worth a mention. Lukman, who plays Jasim, gets a solid role and the youngster proves his mettle. His flexibility in the fights were a treat to the eyes.

These days, it has become a habit for Shine Tom Chacko to ‘shine’ brightly in a multi-starrer. The actor is terrific here as well as he switches shades effortlessly. With him around, you always sense of danger but he ends up doing the exact opposite. Reji is an unpredictable character and there are not many actors who could have pulled it off like Shine.

To put in simply, ‘Thallumaala’ succeeds in what it intended. It’s a cracker of an entertainer that has all the elements for the youth audience to celebrate.

Viruman Review: Karthi’s film is generic and bland

Viruman Review: Karthi’s film is generic and bland

When Karthi and Muthaiya reunited after the success of ‘Komban’, expectations were high. ‘Viruman’ has a lot of Komban-ness in it. The rural setting, aesthetics, village belle heroine, lots of family drama.. However, it still falls short of being engaging and entertaining.

‘Viruman’ is a family drama with the rivalry between an authoritarian father and his youngest son being the centre of action. Prakash Raj plays the dad Muniyandi, a Tahsildar who is respected by the locals. But the man is outright evil and is unabashedly tyrannical. His word will always be the final in the family and he decides for the others. Viruman, the fourth son, hates his father as he was the reason for being his mother’s death. In fact, the film opens with a young Viruman chasing his father with a dagger in hand to kill him. When the court intervenes, he chooses not to go with his dad. His uncle (Raj Kiran) takes care of him. The story is about how Viruman saves his brothers from Muniyandi’s clutches and lets him realise his mistakes.

It is a good enough plot for a compelling family drama but the film suffers from a lot of forumalic elements. Right from the action to the romance to the comedy, everything is generic. Amidst all the blandness is a terrific Prakash Raj. His performance reminds one of his glorious Ghilli days. He is the villain, but he is the entertainer. His dialogues, actions are all supposed to elicit hatred but the actor delivers it in such a way that it’s funny.

Karthi is adequate and does his part well. He basically repeats what he did in ‘Paruthiveeran’ and ‘Komban’. ‘Viruman’ also marks the acting debut of filmmaker Shankar’s daughter Aditi. To be fair, she gets a decent role and there’s a good 5 minutes devoted just for her to prove her dancing skills. It’s more like a showreel for her. There’s a lot of unintended humour in this film like the strange interval block. It’s a tense moment that ends up being hilarious.

In a nutshell, ‘Viruman’ is a largely forgettable affair with only Prakash Raj’s performance lingering on.
