Sarathkumar to make his OTT debut with Birds of Prey!

OTTs are making rapid inroads in the South Indian entertainment industry. Ever since the virus outbreak and the subsequent shutting down of theatres, more people have shifted to the OTT space where they can watch a wide range of regional and international content from the comfort of their home spaces. In the South, particularly in Tamil film industry, many top stars and directors are holding talks with leading OTTs.

Last day on his birthday, it was announced that veteran Sarathkumar will be making his OTT debut with the adaptation of Archana Sarat’s novel ‘Birds of Prey’. Interestingly, Sarath Kumar had also launched the book.

“Sarath Kumar sir was not only kind and humble enough to launch the book of a debut author but he has also taken it to the screen,” Archana wrote in her Twitter handle following the announcement.

Other details regarding the cast and crew are yet to be announced. It is said that Sarath’s better half Radikaa will be producing the project under the banner of Radaan Mediaworks.

Telugu industry’s hit maker Sukumar had roped in Allu Arjun and Vijay Sethupathi for his new film ‘Pushpa’. The film’s first look poster that had Allu Arjun in a rugged, local look had grabbed attention. The fact that two big stars like Vijay Sethupathi and Allu Arjun were acting together for the first time had raised a lot of expectations on the film.

However, due to the unexpected Covid-19 crisis and following date issues, Vijay Sethupathi has now pulled out of the project. The actor himself revealed in a recent interaction that he is no longer associated with the project. He had personally met director Sukumar and conveyed about his busy schedule that forced him to opt out.

It is said that ‘Pushpa’ revolves around the smuggling of red sanders in the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the film has Allu Arjun playing a lorry driver and Vijay Sethupathi was supposed to essay the role of a forest officer. With the latter opting out, it remains to be seen who the makers rope in as a replacement.

‘Pushpa’ has Rashmika Mandanna as the heroine. Prakash Raj, Jagapati Babu, Harish Uthaman, Vennela Kishore, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Anish Kuruvilla and many others are part of the supporting cast. Devi Sri Prasad is composing the music and Polish cameraman Miroslaw Kuba Brozek handles the camera. As per the makers, the movie will be releasing in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

Vidya Balan’s biopic on renowned mathematician Shakuntala Devi is gearing up for release. Amazon Prime has bagged the film’s streaming rights and it will be premiering on July 31. The makers meanwhile have released the trailer online. It encapsulates the journey of Shakuntala Devi who started off from a humble background to become a world famous mathematician. She was popularly known as the ‘Human Computer’. Her extraordinary skills in solving complex mathematical problems earned her a place in the 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records.

Shakuntala Devi has also written a number of books, including novels as well as texts about mathematics, puzzles, and astrology. She also wrote the book ‘The World of Homosexuals’, which is considered the first study of homosexuality in India. It will be interesting to see what all chapters of her life the makers have explored in the film.

The film is directed by Anu Menon and produced jointly by Vikram Malhotra of Abundantia Entertainment and Sony Pictures Network. Anu Menon and Nayanika Mahtani have scripted the film with dialogues penned by Ishita Moitra. Sanya Malhotra, Prakash Belawadi, Amit Sadh, Jisshu Sengupta and many others are part of the cast.

Khalid Rahman successfully wraps up the shoot of his next

Due to the Covid-19 situation, Malayalam film industry was on a standstill for over three months. It was only towards the end of June that shoot and other production works started. Though the Producers Association and Film Chamber strongly opposed the commencement of new films, some filmmakers went ahead with their projects. One of them was Khalid Rahman of ‘Unda’ and ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’ fame.

Khalid had started the shoot of his new film on June 22nd with a limited crew. Shine Tom Chacko, Rajisha Vijayan, Veena Nandakumar, Sudhi Koppa, Gokulan and Johny Antony are playing major roles in this yet-to-be titled film. After around twenty days, the team has managed to successfully wrap up the entire shoot.

Producer Ashiq Usman has informed the same through his social media handle. The whole shoot was conducted as per the government protocols. Director Khalid’s brother Jimshi Khalid is the cinematographer and music will be composed by Neha Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereira.

It is not yet known if the makers are eyeing a theatre release or a direct OTT release. Stay tuned to this space for more updates.

Director RS Vimal of.’Ennu Ninte Moideen’ has announced that he will be making a film based on the Travancore royal history. The film titled as ‘Dharma Rajya’ is about a real-life hero from the Travancore kingdom. It is an ambitious film which is being planned to be made as a multilingual in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.

As per RS Vimal, a superstar from Malayalam has agreed to play the lead role. Since it is a multilingual, ‘Dharma Rajya’ will also have several leading actors from Indian cinema including those from Bollywood. The director has claimed that it will be India’s first film to be captured through virtual production in London. Pooja Entertainments will be backing the project.

RS Vimal had also been working on another big-scale film for the last few years. It is based on the mythological figure Karna from Mahabharatha. Prithviraj was supposed to play the lead role in it but he later opted out due to some creative differences. The project later got revived with Tamil star Vikram and he has already shot a few portions. Its current status is unknown.

Prithviraj starrer ‘Kaduva’ and Suresh Gopi’s 250th film has been in the news for the last couple of weeks. It all started when the makers of ‘Kaduva’ approached the court alleging that there were similarities between the two films. The Kerala high court then ordered a stay on the shoot and promotional activities of the Suresh Gopi starrer.

Veteran scenarist Renji Panicker later came out stating that nobody else can claim ownership over Kaduvakunnel Kuruvachan as it was he who first named that character. Interestingly, the character is based on a real life person named Kurivanakunnel Kuruvachan, who still resides in Pala.

Years back, Renji Panciker was supposed to do a film titled ‘Vyakharam’ based on Kuruvachan’s character with Mohanlal as the lead and Shaji Kailas directing it. However, the project could not materialize then due to various reasons.

Amidst all these controversies, Kurivanakunnel Kuruvachan has now come out opposing both ‘Kaduva’ and ‘SG 250’. He has expressed his strong displeasure against both the films which, according to him, are being made without his consent. As per Kuruvachan, he has discussed the idea about a film only with Renji Panicker and if the other two parties decide to go ahead, he will be dealing with it legally.

Kuruvachan also added that only actors like Mohanlal or Suresh Gopi will be able to bring life to his character on screen. He feels that only these two actors resemble him physically and have that innate charisma. It is learnt that the film’s base story is about a long legal battle that Kuruvachan had with a police officer.

‘Kaduva’ was supposed to mark the comeback of Shaji Kalias to direction after a long gap. The film is scripted by Jinu Abraham, who has earlier penned ‘Masters’ and ‘London Bridge’ and also directed ‘Adam Joan’. Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames are jointly producing it.

On the other hand, ‘SG 250’ is set to be directed by debutant Mathew Thomas, who is a former associate of Jinu Abraham. Shibin Francis has scripted the film and it is produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam.

Recently, the Indian government had banned 59 Chinese mobile applications including the widely-used social media platforms such as TikTok, WeChat, and Helo within view of the threat to the nation’s sovereignty and security. The unexpected move met with mixed response from the general public.

Meanwhile, the makers of upcoming Tamil film ‘Doctor’ have come up with a song based on the TikTok ban. Lead actor and the film’s producer Sivakarthikeyan has shared a teaser video of sorts in his social media handle. Director Nelson Dilipkumar and music director Anirudh Ravichander also appear in the video through which they share about the song concept. The full song will be out on July 16.

‘Doctor’ is written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar of ‘Kolamaavu Kokila’ fame. Priyanka Arul Mohan of ‘Gang Leader’ fame plays the female lead. Vinay and Yogi Babu will be seen in other key roles. Vijay Karthik Kannan of ‘Aadai’ fame is the cinematographer and R Nirmal is the editor.

After the success of ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’, the trio of Ajith, director H Vinoth and producer Boney Kapoor are reuniting for ‘Valimai’. It is said to be an action thriller made on a lavish budget. Shoot was fast progressing when the nationwide lockdown was announced. The makers are currently on a wait to see when things return back to normalcy.

Telugu actor Karthikeya Gummakonda will be seen as the antagonist in the film. He shot to fame with the 2018 film ‘RX 100’. His performance as the villain in last year’s Nani starrer ‘Gang Leader’ was also noted. It remains to be seen how his character has come out in ‘Valimai’.

‘Valimai’ director H Vinoth is known for his films like ‘Sathuranga Vettai’ and ‘Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru’. Though suggest that ‘Valimai’ is a cop film, the makers are yet to confirm it. Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi plays female lead. The film has Yuvan Shankar Raja as the music director and Nirav Shah as the cinematographer.
