Aashiq Abu-Prithviraj film Vaariyamkunnan to be made on a budget of around 80 crores!

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Aashiq Abu are teaming up for the first time ever for a period film titled ‘Vaariyamkunnan’. The film is based on the 1921 Malabar Revolution. Prithviraj is supposedly playing the titular role of Chakkiparamban Variyankunnathu Kunjahammed Haji, who was the leader of Malabar Rebellion against the British. Zikander and Moideen are jointly producing the film under the banners of Compass Movies Ltd and OPM Cinemas.

The makers are planning to start shooting in 2021 on the 100th anniversary of the rebellion. It will be the biggest film done by Aashiq Abu in his career so far. According to him, it’s like a huge war film and the budget could go up to Rs 75-80 crore. The film is scripted by ‘Unda’ fame Harshad and Rameez.

Muhsin Parari will be co-directing the film along with Aashiq Abu. On the technical side, Shyju Khalid will be handling the camera and edits will be done by Saiju Sreedharan. Art director Jyothish Shankar and costume designer Sameera Saneesh are also part of the team.

Jayasurya-Aditi Rao Hydari starrer Sufiyum Sujathayum release date announced

As we already know, Jayasurya’s upcoming film ‘Sufiyum Sujathayum’ will be releasing directly on Amazon Prime. It is the first mainstream Malayalam film to get a direct OTT release. The announcement had stirred a controversy initially as exhibitors and distributors in Kerala were unhappy with a direct OTT release. They even called for boycotting producer Vijay Babu’s and Jayasurya’s films. Later, after holding several rounds of talks, the issue was settled amicably.

‘Sufiyum Sujatha’ is now slated for worldwide premiere on Amazon Prime on July 3. Producer Vijay Babu has made the official announcement. With just 10 more days left for release, trailer and other promo cuts are expected to be out soon.

‘Sufiyum Sujathayum’ is said to be a musical love story that is written and directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas. Along with Jayasurya, Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari plays the other lead. Siddique, Hareesh Kanaran, Vijay Babu, Mamukkoya, Manikandan Pattambi, Kalaranjini and ‘Thamaasha’ fame Navas Vallikkunnu will be seen in supporting roles.

Anu Moothedath is the DOP and Deepu Joseph is handling the edits. Veteran M Jayachandran is composing music for this film.

As reported earlier by us, the popular CBI franchise is set to return for one last time. The trio of Mammootty, director K Madhu and script writer SN Swamy are reuniting once again. The fifth installment in the series is expected to start rolling once the Covid-19 situation gets better. Meanwhile, the makers have started the pre-production works. On the technical front, it is is learnt that Jakes Bejoy has been signed as the music director.

It goes without saying that the background score in CBI series is an iconic one that is hugely popular till date. Veteran Shyam had composed the music for all the four films in the series. With Jakes on board this time, we can expect an upgraded version of the original score. Jakes is one of the leading composers in Malayalam cinema today. Some of his best works came in films like ‘Queen’, ‘Ranam’, ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’, ‘Forensic’ etc.

With ‘CBI 5’, Mammootty will be back once again as the intelligent investigating officer Sethurama Iyer. Scenarist SN Swamy had earlier said that the fifth installment in the series, which will also be the final part, will be one of the best ever thrillers that Malayalam industry has produced till date.

After three months of no activity, Malayalam film industry is slowly getting back to work. Since the Covid-19 situation is not getting any better, taking safety precautions and coping up with it seems to be the only way forward. To ensure that their livelihood is not affected any further, many new filmmakers have started works.

Director Lijo Jose Pellissery has meanwhile announced his next film. Last day, he took to his social media handle to share an abstractly designed poster and also inform that shoot will begin on July 1. No details regarding the cast and crew have been revealed. Lijo’s announcement comes at a time when the Malayalam film producers association have expressed their displeasure over shoot of new films. They had decided that films that began shoot before lockdown should be completed first.

However, many new gen filmmakers are going ahead with their projects. Fahadh Faasil-Mahesh Narayanan team’s experimental project has already begun. It is not yet known if it is a feature or a short film. ‘Unda’ director Khalid Rahman’s new film starring Rajisha, Shine Tom Chacko and Veen Nandakumar was launched last day. ‘Haagar’, Aashiq Abu’s latest production venture is also set to go on floors on July 5.

Unlike how it is usually, Vijay’s birthday celebrations have been subdued this time due to the Covid-19 situation. Vijay had personally requested his fans not to engage in any celebrations during this moment of crisis and instead continue with the welfare activities.

RJ Neenu has rendered a lovely cover version of the song ‘Shilayil Ninnum’ from Mammootty’s 2003 film ‘Chronic Bachelor’. The video has been shared by playback singer and composer Deepak Dev, who both created the original version along with lyricist Kaithapram. Deepak Dev seems to have been highly impressed by the cover version. Launching the video through his social media handle, he has written,

I hereby launch my song “shilayil ninnum” again after 17 years “?truly love this version and I appreciate the makers for understanding my musical emotions and carefully re-producing it ( in fact at some places did I feel that you guys did it better ?) ! Aashiq Abu turns cinematographer!

After dabbling as a filmmaker, producer and actor, Aashiq Abu is now trying his hands in cinematography. He is turning a DOP for ‘Haagar’, which he is also producing along with his wife Rima Kallingal. Harshad, the scriptwriter of ‘Unda’, is making his directorial debut with this film. Rima and Sharafudheen will be seen in the lead roles.

In a recent interview to TOI, when asked about he is decision to turn a cinematographer, Aashiq Abu said that he had always wanted to try it. Interestingly, he was hoping to be the cameraman for Syam Pushkaran’s directorial debut, but since that might take more time, he decided to debut with ‘Haagar’.

Harshad has scripted ‘Haagar’ along with Rajesh Ravi. Editor Saiju Sreedharan, composer duo Neha Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereir, production designer Jyothish Shankar, costume designer Sameera Saneesh and make up artist Ronex Xavier form the technical team. Shoot is scheduled to begin on July 5 in Kochi. The team will be following all safety protocols recommended by the government.

After the superhit success of ‘Unda’, Khalid Rahman had planned to make a film with Shane Nigam but it got shelved at the initial stages itself. Later, he had taken up a film titled ‘Thallumaala’, which was supposed to be directed by Muhsin Parari. It was announced that Tovino and Sharafudheen would be playing the leads. But due to the Covid-19 situation, it seems like that film has also been postponed.

Khalid Rahman has announced a new project, which started rolling today with a customary pooja ceremony. Shine Tom Chacko, Rajisha Vijayan, Veena Nandakumar, Sudhi Koppa, Gokulan and Johny Antony will be playing major roles in this yet-to-be titled film. On the technical front, Jimshi Khalid will be handling the camera and music will be composed by Neha Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereira.

The team will proceed with the shoot following all safety protocols recommended by the government.
