Leonardo Di Caprio shares a timely note about the acute water crisis in Tamil Nadu

The state of Tamil Nadu is witnessing one of its driest seasons in history. The entire state, including its capital Chennai, is grappling with severe water shortage. Most residents are dependent on tankers to meet their day to day needs. After nearly 170 days of no rainfall, the state had intermittent showers in the past week but only continuous pouring will ensure some respite from this misery.

Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Leonardo Di Caprio, who is one of the most loudest voices, in the world with regard to global warming, has shared the news about water shortage in Chennai through his Instagram handle. Sharing a photo of residents drawing from a nearly empty well, Di Caprio has written,

“Only rain can save Chennai from this situation.” A well completely empty, and a city without water. The southern Indian city of Chennai is in crisis, after the four main water reservoirs ran completely dry. The acute water shortage has forced the city to scramble for urgent solutions and residents have to stand in line for hours to get water from government tanks. As the water levels depleted, hotels and restaurants started to shut down temporarily, and the air con was turned off in the city’s metro. Officials in the city continue to try and find alternative sources of water – but the community continue to pray for rain.

Unda is a very realistic and well-made movie: DGP Loknath Behra

Mammootty’s latest release ‘Unda’ is currently in its second successful week of theatrical run. The movie is still getting highly positive response from the audience. Last day, the makers organized a special screening for the Kerala police office. Policemen and their families attended the show at New Theatre in Trivandrum.

DGP Loknath Behra also attended the screening. After the show, while speaking to the medias, Behra said that ‘Unda’ is a realistic and well-made film. While he stressed that the film has some fiction in it, most of it is real and accepted the criticism that the movie puts forward. He also added that the climax portion, which shows how the policemen stand united against the evil forces, was inspiring.

‘Unda’, directed by Khalidh Rahman and scripted by Harshad, is based on some real life incidents. The film tells the story of a unit of policemen from Kerala who are posted in the maoist-affected areas in Chhattisgarh for election duty. In 2014, during the Lok Sabha elections, a battalion of Kerala police got stranded there due to lack of basic amenities and necessary ammunition. The makers made a movie out of this from a newspaper report.

Prithviraj’s new projects to be announced on Lucifer’s 100th day!

Prithviraj Sukumaran is probably in the best phase of his career with his directorial debut ‘Lucifer’ striking gold in the box office. The Mohanlal starrer has emerged as the biggest blockbuster in the history of Malayalam cinema. The movie is currently nearing its 100th day of theatrical run. In this age of multiple releases in a week along with the threat of piracy, it is quite a remarkable feat for a movie to have such a long run in big screens.

Overseas rights of Vijay’s Bigil sold for record price?

Ever since the revelation of the title and posters, Vijay-Atlee team’s ‘Bigil’ has been in the news. Fans as well as the common audience are highly excited about the movie as they have pinned huge hopes on it. It is reported that the movie is likely to do some tremendous business before release itself.

As per a report in Sify, United India Exporters and X Gen Studio have jointly acquired the overseas rights of ‘Bigil’ for Rs 30 crores. It is said to be a record price for a Vijay starrer. Among all the Tamil films, this is the second highest amount after superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘2.0’. Screen Scene is said to have snapped the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights, which also amounts to be a record price. The makers are expected to make an official announcement soon.

‘Bigil’ marks Vijay third film with Atlee after the blockbuster success of ‘Theri’ and ‘Mersal’. Unlike their earlier films, that were regular mass entertainers, this one is a sports based flick centred around woman’s football. Vijay plays a dual role in the movie, as a elderly gangster and a football player. Nayanthara is paired with him.

Induja, Varsha Bollamma and Reba Monica John will be seen in prominent roles as players of Vijay’s football team. Veteran Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, Kathir, Yogi Babu, Vivek, Daniel Balaji, Anand Raj and many others are also part of the cast. AR Rahman has score music for the movie and cinematography is by ‘Mersal’ fame GK Vishnu.

AGS Entertainment is producing the movie, which is scheduled for a grand Diwali release in October.

Nee En Sarga Soundaryame: Here’s a short film that’s daring and unique!

Nee En Sarga Soundaryame: Here’s a short film that’s daring and unique!

Malayalam cinema is currently going through a golden phase with the arrival of many young talents who carry with them fresh ideas and different perspectives on already addressed issues. It seems like this trend is slowly catching up in the short film space as well. Or is it the other way around? Short film arena is usually the breeding ground where filmmakers strive to express their talent and prove their efficiency. Following suit is Divakrishna Vijayakumar, a debutant filmmaker whose maiden work ‘Nee En Sarga Soundaryame’ has recently been released online.

Starring Gibin G Nair in the lead, this roughly 20-minute short is a daring attempt to showcase something that’s considered as a taboo in the society. It is about Dinesh, a married, middle-aged guy who decides to get semen analysis. He visits a fertility clinic that’s located in the outskirts of the city, which seems like a deliberate choice as most men think it’s an unmanly thing to get such tests done. The feeling of shame and embarrassment is the prime reason behind this. It is conveyed precisely in a latter scene when Dinesh calls one of his friends for a help.

At first, Dinesh finds it hard to find a proper space to ejaculate. When he finally manages to get a room, he goes through what’s called a ‘performance anxiety’. How he tries to overcome this, is what’s been told in this interesting short that has a nice touch of black comedy.

Director Divakrishna Vijayakumar’s maturity in handling such a sensitive subject and lead actor Gibin G Nair’s performance deserves appreciation. The helplessness and frustration of the character is presented neatly without any fuss. It is not easy to hold the viewer’s interest in a 20-minute short film with a single main character, but the makers have succeeded in doing so.

We can expect to see more such quality work from this team.

Special screening of Unda organized for Kerala police force!

Mammootty’s latest release ‘Unda’ is currently in its second successful week of theatrical run. The movie is still getting highly positive response from the audience. Most centres, especially multiplexes, are having high occupancy. Meanwhile, the makers organised a special screening of the movie for the Kerala police office. Policemen and their families in Trivandrum will be attending the show today evening at New Theatre.

‘Unda’, directed by Khalidh Rahman and scripted by Harshad, is based on some real life incidents that occurred back in 2014. The film tells the story of a battalion of policemen from Kerala who are posted in the maoist-affected areas in Chhattisgarh for election duty. In 2014, during the Lok Sabha elections, an unit of Kerala police got stranded there due to lack of basic amenities and necessary ammunition. The makers made a movie out of this from a newspaper report.

‘Unda’ is rated as a special film for many reasons. It not just another regular star-glorifying potboiler, but a very layered film with strong political subtexts in it. While Mammootty’s restrained yet powerful performance is the centre of attraction, the movie boasts of equally good performances from all the supporting actors.
