YSR Biopic: Mammootty’s Yatra starts rolling tomorrow!

It is already known that Malayalam superstar Mammootty is playing late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in his biopic. The movie titled ‘Yatra’ is directed by Mahi Raghav, who has made movies like ‘Paathshala’ and ‘Anando Brahma’. If latest reports are to be believed, shoot for Yatra will officially kick-start tomorrow (June 20). Mammootty has allotted around 40 days for the first schedule of the movie.

YS Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR, is one of the most popular and revered politicians that the state of Andhra Pradesh has ever seen. YSR died in an air crash in 2009 when the helicopter carrying him crashed in a dense forest. He was so hugely popular that hundreds of his followers committed suicide upon hearing his unfortunate demise.

According to director Mahi Raghav, Yatra is an event-based film which primarily focuses on the time during YSR’s famous three-month-long padayatra in 2003. The padayatra was a defining moment in his career which transformed him into a people’s leader. While Mammootty has been confirmed for YSR’s role, the makers are yet to make an official announcement about the actors who will be playing the other crucial roles.

Yatra is one of the biggest movies that are currently being made in Tollywood. The makers ar planning to complete shooting and post-production formalities in six months and release the film by next January. The movie is being produced jointly by Vijay Chilla and Shashi Devi under the banner of 70MM Entertainments.

Meanwhile, Mammootty’s latest release Abrahaminte Santhathikal continues to run to packed house in centres across Kerala. Releasing on Saturday, the movie was opened to tremendous audience response and successfully registered this year’s biggest opening at the Kerala box office. Mammootty plays a police officer in this movie scripted by Haneef Adeni and directed by Shaji Padoor. Abrahaminte Santhathikal is slated to hit screens in UAE and GCC from June 21.

Thalapathy 62: Title and first look release date of of Vijay’s next announced

Putting an end to all speculations, it has been officially announced that the title and first look poster of Vijay’s upcoming movie with AR Murugadoss will be released on Sun TV at 6 PM on June 21. This is probably the first time in Tamil cinema that a movie’s first look is being released directly on a television channel. Sun Pictures is making a comeback to production after a long gap by funding this big budget venture.

Thalapathy 62 (working title) is unarguably one of the most anticipated films in Tamil cinema this year. This is Vijay-Muragadoss duo’s third outing together after Thupakki and Kaththi. Both their earlier films were huge blockbusters and naturally expectations are high for their upcoming one. The movie has Keerthy Suresh playing the female lead.

Thalapathy 62 is reportedly shaping up as a political thriller. Murugadoss himself has scripted the movie, and dialogues are penned by noted writer Jeyamohan, who is also the co-writer of 2.O. Vijay is said to be playing the role of a rich businessman in the movie. It is after a long gap that Vijay is playing such a rich and sophisticated character as he has of late been doing roles that commoners could easily relate to.

Pala Karuppaiah, a politician in real life, is playing one in the movie as well while veteran Radha Ravi essays the role of a MLA. Along with them, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar is also playing a brief but very crucial role. These three actors are said to be the antagonists in the movie. Livingston, Yogi Babu, Prem and some other noted actors are also part of the supporting cast.

Thalapathy 62’s technical crew includes Malayali cinematographer Girish Gangadharan, multiple National award winning editor Sreekar Prasad and music maestro AR Rahman. The movie is slated for a grand release this coming Diwali in November.

Odiyan hoardings already up; Movie set for a grand release in October

Odiyan is one movie that the whole Malayali cine lovers are eagerly looking forward to. The movie starring Mohanlal is based on the lives of odiyans, who stories are popular in Kerala’s folklore. Odiyans are people who practice odividya, which is a kind of black magic. This is the first time a movie is being based on odiyans which has raised the curiosity among the audience.

Odiyan’s shoot has been completed and is currently in the post-production phase. The movie is slate for release in October but the makers have already started the promotions. Hoardings of the movie’s posters are being installed in several parts of the state. Aashirvad Cinemas will be releasing the movie in Kerala through Max Lab release.

Expectations for Odiyan are huge for several reasons. Mohanlal is someone who is known for his extremely natural acting skills. He hardly ever puts in an extra effort for his character but for Odiyan he went through multiple physical transformations. Taking everyone by surprise, he even shed around 18 kilos as character in Odiyan demanded a trim look. This is the first time, Mohanlal is putting such efforts for a movie. All this has heightened the expectations among the audience.

Ad filmmaker VA Shrikumar Menon is making his directorial debut with Odiyan, which is touted to be a mass entertainer with elements of fantasy and magical realism. Manju Warrier, Prakash Raj, Bollywood actor Manoj Joshi, Narain and Siddique are also part of the movie.

Njan Marykutty Review: Preachy, but an important movie for the society

Njan Marykutty Review: Preachy, but an important movie for the society

Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya with their previous collaborations have established themselves as a trusted brand. Their latest outing Njan Marykutty raised a lot of curiosity prior to its release, majorly due to the fact that it is perhaps the first mainstream Malayalam movie about a transsexual’s life. Let’s see how the movie has fared out to be.

Njan Marykutty tells the story of a woman trapped in a man’s body. Born as Mathukutty, this 27-year-old techie undergoes a sex-change surgery to become Marykutty. How our society sees such a person and what all issues they face are discussed in the movie, that has a loud preachy tone to it. Like one of Jayasurya-Ranjith Sankar team’s earlier films Su.. Su.. Sudhi Vathmeekam, which had the protagonist as a stammerer, Njan Marykutty is also a motivational story that is ultimately about fighting against all the odds to emerge triumphant.

The margin of error was very small here, anything beyond the thin line would have become vulgarity. So due appreciation for Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya for such a sensible portrayal of the third gender. On the downside, there is hardly any space for cinematic aesthetics here as ‘messages’ are fired one after another.

Marykutty’s sister Annie’s marriage is fixed with a government employee. That is when the groom’s side come to know about Marykutty and her sexuality. Upset with this, the groom’s family decide to call off the wedding unless the dowry amount is increased. Eventually, the girl’s family agree to the proposal and they get married. In a movie like this, which is publicized as an eye-opener for the society, such a shameless practice should have been opposed, or did the makers intend to display it as a reflection of the society that we live in?

Apart from some inspiring songs, composed by Anand Madhusoodhanan, none of the other departments of filmmaking, be it cinematography or editing, manage to leave a mark. However, if the sole aim of the makers was to address a relevant social message, then they have succeeded in doing so.

Jayasurya has visibly put in a lot of efforts to make sure that it does not look like another mimicry act of a man playing a woman for the sake of a few laughs. Malayalam cinema is notorious for celebrating lame jokes and poking fun at the LGBT community. Here, Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya have done wonderfully well to present Marykutty as a dignified personality who stands up for her rights. Joju George as the despicable police officer Kunjipalu has given yet another impressive performance. Siddhartha Siva’s characterization was offensive. Innocent, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Aju Varghese, Jewel Mary and Sivaji Guruvayoor are also there in supporting roles.

Overall, Njan Marykutty is a motivational film that has its share of moments. More than anything, a movie like Marykutty is relevant for the society we live in. For that alone, one should take their kids and families along to watch the movie.
