Kalaga Thalaivan Review: A gripping action entertainer

Kalaga Thalaivan Review: A gripping action entertainer

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s latest film ‘Kalaga Thalaivan’ has him teaming up with director Magizh Thirumeni for the first time. The duo were supposed to team up for ‘Thadam’, but the actor got busy and it eventually was made with Arun Vijay. Magizh is known for making action films like ‘Thadayara Thakka’ and ‘Meaghamann’. ‘Kalaga Thalaivan’ also has an action mood throughout though Udhayanidhi does very less of it.

Udhayanidhi’s character Thirumaaran is a financial analyst who works for a corporate named Vajrah. The company’s top secrets get leaked, which forces them to hire Arjun (Aarav), who specializes is cracking such cases, to find out the culprits behind it. Arjun is an ex-army man who is now a pathological killer. Using cruel ways, his team start investigating from the top ladder. How the dots are connected to eventually reach Thiru and why he fights against Vajrah forms the plot.

‘Kalaga Thalaivan’ seems to be designed specifically for Udhayanidhi. Right from the title to how sun is used as a tool to decimate the evil, everything screams of his political party DMK. To his credit, the actor is also restrained without any showing over the top emotions in the film. It is only in the end that he gets to do realistic stunts, thankfully very realistic, and he does the part well.

Interestingly, it is Aarav who seems to have more screen time in the film. Or atleast that’s how it feels. With his well built physique and suave looks, the actor is superb as a menacing killer. Nidhhi Aggerwal also gets a meaty role unlike the usual heroines and she delivers. Kalaiyarasan in a brief cameo is impressive, but one can’t help but wish he starts saying no to such roles. He is past that phase.

With Srikanth Deva’s rousing score and some fine cinematography, ‘Kalaga Thalaivan’ is also a technically sound film. If you’re in the mood to watch some serious timepass stuff, this is definitely worth it.

Adrishyam Review: An excruciatingly ‘twisted’ thriller

Adrishyam Review: An excruciatingly ‘twisted’ thriller

Thrillers are aplenty in Malayalam cinema these days. Zac Harriss’ directorial debut ‘Adrishyam’ is the latest entrant to the club. The film, set in Chennai, has the look and flavour of a Tamil thriller. It must be noted that the film was shot simultaneously in Tamil (titled Yugi) and Malayalam, with different set of actors. While the female actors in both versions are the same, the men differ. In Tamil, Kathir, Natty, and Narain play the lead roles. Sharafudheen replaces Kathir and Joju George reprises Natty’s role in Malayalam. Narain is part of both ‘Adrishyam’ and ‘Yugi’. However, most of the dialogues are in Tamil. Even when the characters speak in Malayalam, the lip sync doesn’t always match. But these are all secondary problems. Before that, let’s jump into plot.

A top-level police officer entrusts a private detective with the task of finding a girl. Narain plays the detective who investigates about the missing girl. Athmiya Rajan plays his subordinate. Sharafudheen is a suspended sub inspector who is also part of the team. In another track, three men investigate about the same girl. Anything more would be spoilers, as the film has multiple twists and turns.

While twists in a film are supposed to enthrall the audience, here it feels suffocating. Some of them are simply for the sake of tricking (fooling) the audience. Moreover, most of these supposed suspense elements and twists are extremely predictable. It is Sharafudheen and Joju who make it watchable with their performance. The former in particular is really good, as he shows glimpses of a hero material, which has not yet been explored.

Without any emotional connect with the characters and a complete lack of coherence, ‘Adrishyam’ is a total mess that’s unnecessarily complicated.

Wonder Women Review: Anjali Menon’s latest is of an awareness video than a film

Wonder Women Review: Anjali Menon’s latest is of an awareness video than a film

Anjali Menon’s works have all been about relationships. ‘Manjadikuru’ was the story of a big extended family and their dynamics told from the perspective of a young boy. ‘Ustad Hotel’, which she scripted, was about a heartwarming bond a carefree youngster shared with his grandfather. ‘Bangalore Days’ was about a bunch of cousins, while ‘Koode’ primarily dealt with a brother-sister relationship. In ‘Wonder Women’, the director attempts to explore the sisterhood and camaraderie between a group of pregnant ladies who get to know each other at a prenatal class.

Nora Joseph (Nithya Menen), Mini (Parvathy Thiruvothu), Krishnaveni (Padmapriya Janakiraman), Saya (Sayanora Philip), and Jaya (Amruta Subhash) meet at ‘Sumana’, a prenatal centre owned by Nandita (Nadiya Moidu). Her help Gracy (Archana Padmini), who is also pregnant with her second child, join them in the classes. Most of the narrative is centered around educating them (and the audience) about the myths and misconceptions in pregnancy, listen to their body, how to get over their fears and embrace motherhood.

In just around 80 minutes, ‘Wonder Women’ feels more like an awareness video than a film. It doesn’t have any conflicts or character arcs. The plot is shallow and relies more on moments than well-written scenes. It’s as if the primary objective was to spread awareness and of course, smiles. There’s a cheerfulness throughout which Anjali achieves with her charming actors, and Govind Vasantha’s soulful music.

Each of the ladies in the film face some sort of an internal conflict. Saya, a rebel, as she likes to call herself, is cold towards her affectionate and over-supportive boyfriend. Veni’s husband is the average Indian male who has no clue about pregnancy, and prefers to leave it to his wife and mother. Nora’s husband is focussed on his career and is upset about why she chooses to overlook her work and passion ever since becoming pregnant. Mini has just filed divorced because her husband doesn’t want the baby. She is anxious about being single and to hide this, she’s rude towards others. Jaya is tensed and extremely cautious as had multiple miscarriages. Gracy is cash-strapped. All these prospective mothers are united by Nandita, who lost her child on birth. The problem with the film is none of these stories are explored in depth despite having great potential. It hardly skims through the surface and that’s it. This is why ‘Wonder Women’ becomes a disappointment inspite of all the happy moments in it.
